Bovine colostrum (BC) is the first milk produced by cows after calving and contains numerous beneficial substances for the immunity and development of the newborn calf. Because of the growth and immune factors in BC, it has become an attractive supplement for use by athletes to support immunity and health during athletic performance. In order to evaluate the effects of oral BC supplementation on equine athletes, this study evaluated the earnings, performance, recovery and incidence of upper respiratory infections (URTI) in racing horses. The study design was a randomized cross-over racing performance study. 21 horses in race training were randomly …

Sera from 1133 Turkish horses were obtained and tested for equid herpesvirus 3 (EHV-3) antibodies using a sero-neutralisation test. The sample consisted of 420 privately owned working horses from 2 regions of Turkey, 428 brood horses from private stud farms and breeding stations, and 285 racehorses from private stud farms. Neutralising antibodies against EHV-3 were found in 287 (25.3%) of the 1133 analysed sera. The highest seroprevalence for EHV-3 was detected in the brood horses (51.2%), followed by the racehorses (10.2%), and the working horses (9.3%). The seroprevalence rates tended to be higher in female horses than in male horses …

Polymorphism In Introns 5 And 6 Of The Acta1 Gene In Various Polish Horse Breeds, Daniel Polasik, Ryszard Pikula

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to find polymorphisms in the actin alpha 1 gene (ACTA1) in horses belonging to different breeds and utility types and to compare them. The genomic region of the actin alpha 1 gene was positively selected in purebred horses. By sequencing part of the ACTA1 gene, 2 polymorphic sites located in intron 5 (G > T) and intron 6 (G > C) were found. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and the amplification created restriction site-polymerase chain reaction methods were applied to screen these polymorphisms. An analysis of the genotype and allele frequencies showed differences depending …
