Isolation and identification of Avibacterium paragallinarum, the causative agent of infectious coryza, is considered a challenging task in laboratories with limited specialties. In the present study, 14 commercial layer fowls showing the typical symptoms of infectious coryza were subjected to primary isolation followed by polymerase chain reaction confirmation of suspect colonies (culture-PCR). Direct PCR assays on infraorbital sinus swab samples were also carried out. Thirty-five suspected cases of infectious coryza in commercial broiler chickens were also screened using direct PCR on infraorbital sinus swabs. In culture-PCR, only 1 of the 4 suspected isolates was confirmed as Av. paragallinarum. In comparison, …

A 10-month-old, unilateral cryptorchid, male English bulldog underwent urethropexy for the treatment of urethral prolapse. Six hours after surgery the dog developed dysuria, haematuria, discomfort, severe penile oedema, inflammation, and inability to extrude the penis from the prepuce. Urethral patency was restored by placing an indwelling catheter into the urethral lumen. Penile swelling was managed with cold and warm compresses for 2 days, and antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and opioids for 4 days. Complete resolution of the swelling was evident by 3 days after surgery. One year after surgery the dog was reported to be in good health.

The Avian Ovary And Follicle Development: Some Comparative And Practical Insights, Alan L. Johnson
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This review focuses on recent research related to the avian ovary and, in particular, cellular mechanisms mediating embryonic growth of the ovary, postembryonic follicular development, and the process of follicular selection. Attention is drawn to a variety of fundamental, yet unresolved, aspects of ovarian function, several of which are uniquely related to avian reproductive strategies. Some notable differences in ovarian function between birds and the most closely related extant group, the crocodilians, are illustrated. Moreover, because the sauropsid (reptilian and avian) and synapsid (mammalian) lineages diverged shortly after the emergence of amniotes some 340 million years ago, consideration is given …

Paramphistomosis is widely prevalent in domestic farm animals, incurring heavy economic losses in several countries across the world. As the identification of these parasites based on morphological features is very difficult, molecular characterization is necessary to discriminate among different species. We performed polymorphic DNA fingerprint analysis of 3 different species of amphistomes collected from the rumen and bile ducts of buffaloes slaughtered at a local abattoir in Anand, Gujarat, India. The ruminal amphistomes were identified as Paramphistomum cervi and Gastrothylax indicus, while the hepatic amphistomes were identified as Gigantocotyle bathycotyle. High annealing temperature-random amplified polymorphic DNA (HAT-RAPD) analysis with 4 …

Evaluating The Effects Of Chitosan, Plant Oils, And Different Diets On Rumen Metabolism And Protozoan Population In Sheep, Monika Wencelova, Zora Varadyova, Katarina Mihalikova, Svetlana Kisidayova, Dusan Jalc
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Chitosan (CH) has been shown to be a promising natural antimicrobial agent. This study examined the effects on rumen metabolism when providing diets containing high forage (HFD), low forage (LFD), and maize silage (MSD) to a 24-h batch culture in which the diets were not supplemented (control) or were supplemented with CH (100 mg/L), sunflower oil (SF, 35.0 g/kg dry matter), rapeseed oil (RP, 35.0 g/kg dry matter), or SF and RF with chitosan combinations (SFCH and RPCH). Dry matter digestibility in the batch culture was influenced by CH and was decreased in HFD compared with the control (P < 0.01). Decreasing total number of protozoa and the number of Entodinium spp. was evident, especially in LFD and MSD, with all additives. RPCH had a predominantly adverse effect on Dasytricha ruminantium in MSD. Interactions of the diets × additives in the majority of rumen ciliate populations were detected. The concentrations of trans-vaccenic acid and conjugated linoleic acid (c9, t11-CLA) were unchanged by chitosan. However, the combination of SF and RF with chitosan (SFCH and RPCH) positively affected fatty acid profiles, which might be related to differences in diets, SF or RP composition, and different microbial activity in the batch cultures.

Both cattle and dogs were examined in modern and rural dairy farms that had a history of abortion over 5%. The blood samples were collected from 427 aborted cattle and the sera were tested using a commercial ELISA test kit. Additionally, a necropsy procedure was carried out on the fetuses and calves dead within 2 months after birth; the tissue samples were evaluated by histopathologic, immunoperoxidase, and PCR techniques. Eighteen dogs in close contact with the cattle in the same field were included in the study and blood and feces samples were collected. The feces samples were analyzed by copro-PCR …

Skeletal muscles (tongue, masseter, leg, intercostal, and diaphragmatic muscles) and brain samples of 100 sheep at slaughter were analysed for the presence of T. gondii tissue cysts along with serum IgG titres. Two methods of isolation by percoll gradient centrifugation and tissue microarray (TMA) technique with immunoperoxidase staining were used. Seropositivity was detected in 88% (88/100) of sheep sera analysed by indirect fluorescent antibody test. Tissue cysts were observed in 46 (52.3%, 46/88) and 15 (17%, 15/88) of the seropositive sheep with the isolation technique and TMA and immunoperoxidase staining, respectively. The diameters of the tissue cysts were 25–58 × …
