This study was designed to determine the effect of decontamination on the shelf life of whole rainbow trouts. For this purpose 0.5% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), 10% trisodium phosphate (TSP), 2.5% acetic acid (AA), 2.5% lactic acid (LA), 1200 ppm acidified sodium chloride (ASC) and control (tap water) were used as decontaminants. After the decontamination process, the samples were stored in cold storage and subjected to microbiological and chemical analyzes on days 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15. The purpose of this study was to highlight the effects of natural plant essential oils (EOs) on sous-vide sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fillets. Three different treatments were prepared by addition of: 1) no essential oil (C), 2) laurel (Laurus nobilis) EO (L), and 3) basil (Ocimum basilicum) EO (B). In general, incorporation of the EOs did not cause significant changes in the proximate composition (P > 0.05). The addition of L caused a darker and more greenish-yellow colour, while addition of B did not have a considerable alteration in colour parameters. The results of hematological analyses may be affected by preanalytical factors such as sampling procedure, type and concentration of anticoagulant, or conditions and time of blood storage. In the present study the effects of various concentrations of heparin (0-200 IU/cm3) and different times (2, 24, or 48 h) and temperatures (4 or 22 °C) of blood storage on the values of hematological parameters in Cyprinus carpio were evaluated. Hematological effects of etomidate and tricaine at concentrations causing general anesthesia or sedation of carp juveniles were compared. Recovery of body balance took similar time in the case of both anesthetics, but fish treated with etomidate were depressed for several hours, while those subjected to tricaine immediately regained normal behavior. Immediately after exposure anesthetics caused minor hematological changes; the only statistically significant effects (decrease of hematocrit and plasma glucose) occurred after sedation with etomidate. The ecological cognition hypothesis poses that the brains and behaviours of individuals are largely shaped by the environments in which they live and the associated challenges they must overcome during their lives. Here we examine the effect of environmental complexity on relative brain size in 4 species of intertidal gobies from differing habitats. Two species were rock pool specialists that lived on spatially complex rocky shores, while the remainder lived on dynamic, but structurally simple, sandy shores. Recent research has shown the possibility of pain perception in fish; therefore, the use of analgesia or “painkillers” should be considered for invasive procedures. However, there is relatively little information on the effectiveness of analgesic drugs nor on the appropriate dose for fish. This study assessed the efficacy of three types of drug: an opioid, buprenorphine, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), carprofen and a local anaesthetic, lidocaine. A total of 366 specimens of 10 fish species inhabiting Lake Sığırcı were examined between April 2009 and February 2010. Inside or outside of these fish, 33 parasite species were identified. From these parasites, 18 monogenean, 5 digenean trematode, 3 cestode, 3 acanthocephalan, 3 nematode, and 1 Mollusca: Bivalvia (glochidia) species were recorded. Diplostomum spp., Tylodelphys clavata, glochidia-larvae, and monogenean species were found to be common parasites in all the fish species examined. Adverse environmental conditions (contamination of water with nitrite, pesticides, or other pollutants), nutritional deficiencies, bacterial and viral infections, and parasitic invasions may induce anemia in fish, in both natural and aquaculture conditions. Changes in hematological values and cellular composition of peripheral blood and head kidney hematopoietic tissue of bled common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) were evaluated over a 4 week period post-bleeding (30% blood loss). Disodium EDTA used as anticoagulant for common carp blood caused a significant increase and high variability in hematocrit readings comparing to the heparinized samples. Na2EDTA induced erythrocyte swelling, causing cell membrane disruption (hemolysis). The nuclei released from destroyed cells changed shape from oval to round, and underwent gradual swelling and vacuolation, followed by karyolysis. The degree of observed changes was similar at all Na2EDTA concentrations (0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mg/mL); on the other hand, percentage of abnormal and destroyed cells showed considerable differences among blood sampled from various carp individuals. The present study examined the haematological effects of ichthyophthiriasis in common carp. Blood was collected from 4 groups of juvenile carp: 1. healthy; 2. with minor symptoms of ichthyophthiriasis; 3. with severe symptoms of ichthyophthiriasis (moribund); survivors of ichthyophthiriasis after a 3-week recovery period. This study examined stimulus–response properties of somatosensory receptors on the head of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, using extracellular recording from single cells in the trigeminal ganglion. Of 121 receptors recorded from 39 fish, 17 were polymodal nociceptors, 22 were mechanothermal nociceptors, 18 were mechanochemical receptors, 33 were fast adapting mechanical receptors and 31 were slowly adapting mechanical receptors. Mechanical thresholds were higher in polymodal nociceptors than in either slowly adapting or fast adapting mechanical receptors, whereas thermal thresholds of mechanothermal nociceptors were higher than those of polymodal nociceptors. One hundred and fifty fish caught from Keban Dam Lake were examined for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. A random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) assay using a random primer was performed to detect genetic variations among L. monocytogenes isolates. The selective enrichment procedure followed by selective isolation was used for listeria isolation from fish intestines. Ten (6.6%) L. monocytogenes were isolated and identified from fish intestines. Two different band profiles were obtained by the RAPD analysis of the isolates. Experiments were conducted in two series for 1, 7, 15 and 30 days. In the first series, fish were exposed to 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 ppm of copper and in the second series to 0.1 + 0.05, 0.5 + 0.1, 1.0 + 0.5 and 5.0 + 1.0 ppm of copper and cadmium mixtures. The fatty acid (FA) composition of some tissues of Salmo trutta labrax, Pallas, 1811 mature native freshwater wild salmon species caught from Kazandere creek in the Çoruh region in Turkey were investigated. Fatty acids profiles of muscle, liver, gonad, egg and adipose tissue were compared in terms of total and individual saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The results showed that the highest total saturated fatty acid content was in the muscle (37.20 ± 1.13%) while the lowest value was in the egg (27.12 ± 2.53%), and the differences were significant (P < 0.05) among the tissues. Infection with the parasite Diplostomum sp. can lead to severe ocular pathology and may result in host mortalities in commercial fish farming. Here we show that such infection is rife in a major lake used for fishing in Turkey. In a study of Acanthobrama marmid fish in Keban Dam Lake, Elazığ, Turkey, we found the infection period was normally between May and September each year, and that the prevalence and abundance of eye lens parasites reached a maximum in September. This study was performed to establish techniques used in the isolation and identification of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and investigate the presence of V. parahaemolyticus in fish and clams. Between June 1998 and June 2000, a total of 46 fish samples including 14 anchovies, 12 whiting, 10 horse mackerel and 10 sardines collected from fish markets in Bursa and a total of 70 clam samples collected from shellfish stations in Sakarya and Kocaeli districts were tested for V. parahaemolyticus. In this study Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd contents were analyzed in liver and muscle tissues of ten fish species (Mullus barbatus, Mugil cephalus, Trachurus trachurus, Pagellus acarne, Dicentrarchus labrax, Sparus auratus, Sardinella aurita, Boops boops, Scomber japonicus, Solea solea) caught in the Gulf of Antalya in January, February and March 2000. Cu and Zn contents were found to be 0.51-3.66 mg/kg and 3.17-11.36 mg/kg in fish muscles and 0.83-4.44 mg/kg and 3.97-15.14 mg/kg in liver tissue respectively. Seafoods are very perishable, and many different methods are used for the determination of their quality. Sensory and hypoxanthine values of cold stored trout burgers, which we prepared, were determined during a 28-day period. Burgers spoiled after the 21st day of storage. The TVB-N values were still very low when the burgers spoiled and the pH values decreased during their storage. Therefore total volatile bases nitrogen and pH analyses were not useful for the determination of the quality of trout burgers. The effect of glazing with the solutions contained ascorbic acid (AA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), BHT/BHA combination and only water, and storage time on lipid oxidation of chub mackerel were determined during frozen storage at -18°C for 10 months. Glazing with some antioxidants or water of the fish retarded lipid oxidation when compared to control samples during frozen storage. In this study, 80 carp specimens (Cyprinus carpio) (16 fish from each station) of ages between 1-2 were caught at five stations in the upper Sakarya river basin the four seasons between October 1995 and October 1996. The structural changes of gill, liver and spleen tissue of the carp were examined. The gills of fishes which live in aquatic habitat exhibit tissue lesions caused by water pollutants, because they are in direct contact with their environment.
