Uncertainty abounds in the clinical environment. Medical students, however, are not explicitly prepared for situations of uncertainty in clinical practice, which can cause anxiety and impact well-being. To address this gap, we sought to capture how students felt in various clinical scenarios and identify programs they found helpful as they worked through uncertainty in their clerkships to better inform curriculum that prepares them to acknowledge and navigate this uncertainty. This is an observational cross-sectional study of third-year medical students surveyed at the end of core clerkships. Julie Anderson, DrOT, OTR/L, is an occupational therapist in the Puyallup School District who works with elementary aged students. For this project, Dr. Anderson worked as the primary collaborator with occupational therapy students to answer the question: What is the evidence that occupational therapy interventions at a systems-level improve student's academic performance and skill development outcomes, such as handwriting, in elementary age students with and without disabilities? The results of this descriptive study indicate strong evidence that systems-level interventions, involving an occupational therapist, in a school setting improve at least one area of a student’s skill development. Handwriting is an important life skill, and handwriting tasks take up a significant amount of time during the school day. Research suggests that writing by hand influences reading skills, recall, academics, and motor and composition skills. Pediatric occupational therapists evaluate and treat children who are struggling with handwriting; therefore, it is important for practitioners to be aware of a variety of treatment strategies for addressing handwriting challenges. A literature review of sensory interventions that are possible in a school setting by occupational therapists was completed based on Jennifer Burke’s, a Franklin Pierce Public Schools occupational therapist, question. Her question was what sensory interventions have been shown to be effective for decreasing negative behaviors and/or increasing participation that could be used in a school setting. Most sensory based interventions (SBI) had only weak evidence in support. Sensory integration therapy (SIT) showed more promise for achieving individual goals.
