Occupational Therapists' Assessment Of The Caregivers Of Their Elderly Patients, Ernest Vincent Corradetti
Occupational Therapists' Assessment Of The Caregivers Of Their Elderly Patients, Ernest Vincent Corradetti
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the methods and extent to which occupational therapists who are practicing in aging are assessing the caregivers of their elderly patients. A random sample of 500 therapists who subscribe to a special interest group publication of a professional organization were surveyed by mail and 204 responses were received.
Respondents were asked to indicate all of the activities related to caregiver assessments in which they engage. Methods of assessment included: (a) professional caregiving activities, (b) informal assessment methods, and (c) formal assessment methods. There were more than 90% of respondents who indicated that …

Epidemiologic studies reveal that women have a significantly lower age-adjusted morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease than men, suggesting that gender is a cardiovascular disease risk factor. The mechanism of the “gender protection” is unknown. In this study, we investigated the microvascular remodeling in reduced renal mass plus a high salt (4.0% NaCl) diet model of hypertension (RRM + HS). We hypothesized that women would be protected from the increase in blood pressure and from the microvascular rarefaction associated with RRM + HS hypertension. Studies were designed to determine whether female rats were less susceptible to changes in microvessel density …
The Effect Of Self-Operated Prompts On Leisure Participation By Persons With Mental Retardation, Tanya Michele Camper
The Effect Of Self-Operated Prompts On Leisure Participation By Persons With Mental Retardation, Tanya Michele Camper
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The use of permanent prompts for individuals with severe disabilities has been shown to be effective in acquiring new skills, improving the accuracy and maintenance of existing skills, and in eliminating the need for trainer prompts. However, this technology has not been evaluated for its potential impact in promoting leisure participation. In this study, two men with mental retardation were administered auditory and/or visual prompts to investigate their effect on increasing participation in a leisure activity. In addition, their performance was evaluated to establish whether continuous versus intermittent schedules of the prompts would influence participation. The data were collected using …
Icelandic Occupational Therapists' Attitudes Toward Educational And Professional Issues, Elín Ebba Ásmundsdóttir
Icelandic Occupational Therapists' Attitudes Toward Educational And Professional Issues, Elín Ebba Ásmundsdóttir
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The entire population of Icelandic occupational therapists were surveyed concerning characteristics and attitudes toward professionalism and educational goals. There were 87 questionnaires sent out and 80 (92%) were returned and used for analysis. This data will have a positive impact upon the development of the first Icelandic occupational therapy curriculum. Icelandic occupational therapists, in general, value academic skills over technical skills, are active in their association, willing to take on duties for the advancement of the profession and are interested in conducting research. The attitudes of the Icelandic occupational therapists were generally quite uniform. T- tests and one-way ANOVAs (p < .05) revealed some significant differences in a number of attitudes by education level, length of professional experience and country of education. The results show the importance of providing Icelandic occupational therapy practitioners with the opportunity to take part in research. This study will serve as a foundation for future studies on Icelandic occupational therapists and provide reference data for later comparison.
Clinical Interpretation Of "Health And The Human Spirit For Occupation"., Janice P. Burke
Clinical Interpretation Of "Health And The Human Spirit For Occupation"., Janice P. Burke

In reading and contemplating Yenca's (1998) article, I was immediately struck by the utility of the ideas she offers on a number of clinical fronts. We are presented with occupation-based strategies that are directly applicable to our work with patients and program development; we can make use of the language and ideas that are offered as a way to begin talking to one another (therapist to therapist) in clinical settings about occupation; and we are given the opportunity to think about the contribution, value, and efficacy of occupation and how we might convert those ideas into clinically based research actions. …
Occupational Therapy In Iceland Attitude, Knowledge And Cooperation, Gunnhildur Gisladottir
Occupational Therapy In Iceland Attitude, Knowledge And Cooperation, Gunnhildur Gisladottir
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to discover attitudes and knowledge of four healthcare student groups toward occupational therapy in Iceland.
A fact-sheet identifying philosophy, theoretical background, skills roles and occupational therapy working areas was developed. Pre-test and post-test questionnaires were used to measure any attitude and knowledge changes which might have occurred after reading the fact-sheet.
The results demonstrated that the four student groups had obtained knowledge about occupational therapy during their university experiences; either from in class information or from field trips to occupational therapy departments. The questionnaire results indicated that students' attitudes toward cooperation with occupational therapists …
Beliefs Of Icelandic Elderly Living In The Greater Reykjavik Area Toward Autonomy And Paternalism In Caregiving Of The Elderly, Ingibjorg Svava Asgeirsdottir
Beliefs Of Icelandic Elderly Living In The Greater Reykjavik Area Toward Autonomy And Paternalism In Caregiving Of The Elderly, Ingibjorg Svava Asgeirsdottir
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the aging population and the increase in health care costs, issues of independence and autonomy will have a greater impact on formal and informal health care. Changes in occupational functioning that accompany increased age has raised the demand
for family assistance to the elderly. It is important for occupational therapists to understand the elderly's perceptions toward autonomy and paternalism in caregiving of the elderly because it is assumed that attitudes and beliefs affect how people interact and care for the elderly.
A convenience sample of 57 Icelandic elderly were surveyed regarding their attitudes toward autonomy and paternalism in caregiving …

How Occupational Therapists Teach Older Patients To Use Bathing And Dressing Devices In Rehabilitation., Ruth Levine Schemm, Laura N. Gitlin
Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers
OBJECTIVE: This article describes the methods occupational therapists use to teach bathing and dressing device use to older patients in rehabilitation programs. The relationship of three patient characteristics to five aspects of assistive device instruction was examined.
METHOD: The study sample included 86 patients and 19 occupational therapists who provided the assistive device training. Patients were 55 years of age or older and in rehabilitation for an orthopedic deficit, cerebrovascular accident, or lower limb amputation. Therapists recorded information on teaching methods, perceptions of patient knowledge, and expectations for future device use after each treatment session.
RESULTS: Patients received an average …

OBJECTIVE: This report describes how common student communicative and behavioral characteristics that appear to predict the existence of potential problems during Level II fieldwork were identified in order to develop and implement preventative interventions during the academic curriculum at New York University (NYU). RECORD REVIEW: A record review of NYU professional-level occupational therapy students from 1986 to 1995 was completed to identify common factors among students who performed well academically but failed clinical fieldwork. Eight communicative and behavioral characteristics were identified: (a) rigidity of thinking, (b) discomfort with the ambiguity that accompanies clinical reasoning, (c) lack of psychological insight, (d) …

In the newborn period, infants prenatally exposed to cocaine and other drugs show low scores on the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale. Beyond that period, research is limited on the effects of prenatal drug exposure on neurobehavioral functioning. In this study we compared infants exposed to cocaine and other drugs and control infants from low socioeconomic backgrounds on measures of neurobehavioral functioning during neuromotor assessment at 1, 4 and 7 months of life. None of the measures of neurobehavioral functioning showed any significant group differences. This study did not support the hypothesis of disrupted neurobehavioral functioning beyond the neonatal period in …

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among alcohol consumption, sexual assault and rape, and nonsexual violence in a college population at a large Northeastern university. A 49-item questionnaire was designed to elicit responses from both victims and perpetrators. Of the 1,084 respondents: 518 were male, 566 were female, the majority were White (91.8%), and in the 18-21 age range. Unwanted sexual activity, rape, and violence were significantly related to alcohol consumption on the college campus studied. These data indicated that alcohol was involved in: a) unwanted sexual activity--both from the victim's perspective (85.7%) and from the …
