Background: Patients who have undergone implantation of a left ventricular assistive device are at a higher risk for readmission- whether that be due to driveline dressing infections, thrombosis, bleeding at the site of implantation, or electrolyte imbalances. Effects Of Educational Weight Loss Interventions On Knee Arthroplasty For Obese Patients, Ashley Tomasetto, Emily Anderson, Grace Hodgson, Annabelle Hudgins, Katelin Hartley

Background: Obese patients (BMI > 30) with osteoarthritis undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) surgery are at an increased risk for operative failure, higher pain level, lengthier recovery time, and decreased mobility post-surgery.

Objective: To analyze and synthesize existing evidence to determine the efficacy of educational weight loss interventions prior to TKA on adult obese patients’ recovery time, pain level, and mobility post-surgery. Weight loss intervention education was provided to obese patients aged 35-55 years in the form of nutrition and exercise programs to encourage weight loss. The study group was compared to patients who did not receive this pre-surgical education.

Muscle spasticity is a common spinal cord injury sequela that causes muscle stiffness, spasms, and painful involuntary contractions. Spasticity can result in difficulty walking, deformed joints, lack of head control, and impairment performing activities of daily living. Spasticity is dynamic and often requires a multifaceted approach to manage symptoms and achieve patient goals. The leading treatment for spasticity is oral Baclofen. Additional treatment methods include electrical stimulation and phenol injections. Oral baclofen is frequently prescribed in combination with these.

However, these spaces are frequently, even if unintentionally, biased against marginalized and underserved populations. Cuthbert and Taylor (2019) noted the importance of inclusive language and heightened awareness of physical requirements for spaces as ways to impact a sense of connectedness to an environment. Hartal (2018) encourages open communication among staff regarding issues related to diversity and celebrating individual differences. Objective: 1) Determine the prevalence of cardiometabolic disease (CMD) risk factors in Canadian outpatients with spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D); and 2) Augment CMD screening practices to reflect evidence-based guidelines using quality improvement initiatives.

Design: Chart audit of consecutive outpatients with SCI/D assessed after discharge from Parkwood Institute between October 2020 to December 2021 (n=78). Data collected included presence of and evidence-based screening for 4 CMD risk factors – obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus. Definitions for presence of these 4 CMD risk factors were established using clinical practice guidelines for persons with SCI/D.

Aerobic exercise is critical in improving muscle strength, balance, and gait in stroke rehabilitation; higher dosage of exercise, in the form of increased physiotherapy(PT) duration, step counts, is associated with greater motor recovery. We sought to explore whether aerobic intensity level in one PT session is associated with the change in walking endurance; we hypothesized that higher levels of aerobic intensity, younger age, and being male would relate to greater improvement in walking endurance for individuals with stroke.

Pharmacologic management of chronic pain has variable results, sometimes resorting to ineffective and dangerous opioids that can potentiate substance abuse in a vulnerable population.

Exercise is unique in its ability to positively impact both the molecular and psychological aspects of chronic pain. Its role in decreasing inflammation as well as improving mental health make it an excellent option for improving quality of life.

Physicians should work with their patients to develop a patient-centered exercise plan to manage chronic pain.

An ankle- foot orthosis (AFO) can contribute to push-off during walking by storing energy from heel strike in the rigid strut and subsequently returning force during push-off. Peripheral artery disease (PAD), a manifestation of systemic atherosclerosis, blocks the arteries supplying blood to the legs and causes muscle pain and weakness, which leads to difficulty walking. Wearing an AFO can help patients with PAD walk better. In our study, subjects decided whether to adopt or not adopt the AFO.
