Return To Swimming Protocol For Competitive Swimmers: A Post-Operative Case Study And Fundamentals, Tracy H. Spigelman, Aaron Sciascia, Timothy L. Uhl

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

A large percentage of swimmers report shoulder pain during their swimming career. Shoulder pain in swimmers has been attributed to duration of swim practice, total yardage, and break down in stroke technique. Rehabilitation programs are generally land-based and cannot adequately address the intricacies of the swimming strokes. Return to swimming protocols (RTSP) that address progression of yardage are scarce, yet needed. The purpose of this clinical commentary is to familiarize the clinician with the culture and vernacular of swimming, and to provide a suggested yardage based RTSP for high school and collegiate level swimmers.

Comparison Of Isokinetic Hip Abduction And Adduction Peak Torques And Ratio Between Sexes, Dai Sugimoto, Carl G. Mattacola, David R. Mullineaux, Thomas Gerard Palmer, Timothy E. Hewett Sep 2014

Comparison Of Isokinetic Hip Abduction And Adduction Peak Torques And Ratio Between Sexes, Dai Sugimoto, Carl G. Mattacola, David R. Mullineaux, Thomas Gerard Palmer, Timothy E. Hewett

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate hip abductor and adductor peak torque outputs and compare their ratios between sexes.

DESIGN: A cross-sectional laboratory-controlled study.

SETTING: Participants visited a laboratory and performed an isokinetic hip abductor and adductor test. All participants performed 2 sets of 5 repetitions of concentric hip abduction and adduction in a standing position at 60 degrees per second. Gravity was determined as a function of joint angle relative to the horizontal plane and was corrected by normalizing the weight of the limb on an individual basis.

PARTICIPANTS: A total of 36 collegiate athletes.

INDEPENDENT VARIABLES: Sex (20 females and 16 …

Combination Therapy Of Hyaluronic Acid Mesotherapic Injections And Sclerotherapy For Treatment Of Lower Leg Telangiectasia Without Major Venous Insufficiency: A Preliminary Clinical Study, Tommaso Iannitti, Valentina Rottigni, Federica Torricelli, Beniamino Palmieri Apr 2014

Combination Therapy Of Hyaluronic Acid Mesotherapic Injections And Sclerotherapy For Treatment Of Lower Leg Telangiectasia Without Major Venous Insufficiency: A Preliminary Clinical Study, Tommaso Iannitti, Valentina Rottigni, Federica Torricelli, Beniamino Palmieri

Physiology Faculty Publications

Background. Telangiectasia is the dilation of dermal capillaries mainly due to hypertension and vein insufficiency. Treatments of choice for this condition are sclerotherapy with foam liquid or intradermal fiber optic laser energy delivery. Aim. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of a new therapeutic approach consisting in the use of polymerized hyaluronic acid mesotherapicinjections following sclerotherapy in the areas of the skin affected by telangiectasia in patients without major vein insufficiency. Materials and Methods. A total of 20 women, aged between 19 and 64 years, affected by recurrent lower leg telangiectasia, were included in this study. …

Let’S Play: Understanding The Role And Significance Of Digital Gaming In Old Age, Julie A. Skalsky Brown Jan 2014

Let’S Play: Understanding The Role And Significance Of Digital Gaming In Old Age, Julie A. Skalsky Brown

Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology

Despite a marked increase in the use of digital games among older persons, there is insufficient research that provides insight into the gaming experiences of this population. A major demographic shift within the senior gaming market has ushered in a new perspective on the use of digital games as a tool for physical and cognitive health, and improved socialization. It is proposed that individual notions of play, which are developed over the life course, influence digital game play engagement and interaction preferences, and contribute to well-being. This study explored how self-perceptions of play over the course of the senior gamer’s …

Occupational Therapists' Experiences With Ethical And Occupation-Based Practice In Hospital Settings, Joanne P. Estes Jan 2014

Occupational Therapists' Experiences With Ethical And Occupation-Based Practice In Hospital Settings, Joanne P. Estes

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Changes in health care delivery practices are impacting the provision of care in all venues. Occupational therapists working in hospital settings strive to meet professional mandates for occupation-based practice within a medical-model system. Ethical practice is another aspect of service provision vulnerable to contextual influences. The aims of the two studies reported here were to explore occupational therapists’ experiences with occupation-based practice, and with ethical issues, in hospital settings. Grounded theory methods were employed for both studies. Data were collected via individual, semi-structured interviews with 22 participants for the first study. For the second study, nine participants participated in individual, …

Play In Children With Motor Disabilities, Suzanne Martin Jan 2014

Play In Children With Motor Disabilities, Suzanne Martin

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

The purpose of this research was to explore and describe the relationship among the child, family, home environment, and pretend play of children with motor disabilities. The environment is a powerful force in early child development. This research is based on Bronfennbrenner’s ecological theory of development and the ubiquitous role of play in all domains of development. Children with motor disabilities may lack exploration of the environment and as a consequence demonstrate deficits in play. Play was measured in 32 children with motor disabilities aged 24.8 to 61.3 months with a mean age of 33.7 (SD 9.3) months. Children demonstrated …

The Relationship Between Patient Expectations, Functional Outcome, Self-Efficacy, And Rehabilitation Adherence Following Cartilage Repair Of The Knee: A Sequential Explanatory Analysis, Jenny L. Toonstra Jan 2014

The Relationship Between Patient Expectations, Functional Outcome, Self-Efficacy, And Rehabilitation Adherence Following Cartilage Repair Of The Knee: A Sequential Explanatory Analysis, Jenny L. Toonstra

Theses and Dissertations--Rehabilitation Sciences

Patient expectations have been shown to be a major predictor of outcomes. Furthermore, fulfilled expectations have been linked to increased patient satisfaction and rehabilitation adherence. Expectations may be influenced by a variety of factors, including patient characteristics, pre-operative function, or disease characteristics. However, it is currently unknown what factors and to what degree they may influence patient expectations prior to knee surgery. Furthermore, understanding the importance and values of those expectations for recovery using qualitative methods has not previously been conducted in this patient population.

A mixed methods design was used. Twenty-one participants scheduled to undergo cartilage repair of the …

Assessing Candidacy For Intensive Language Therapy: A Preliminary Study, Jessica N. Bellamy Jan 2014

Assessing Candidacy For Intensive Language Therapy: A Preliminary Study, Jessica N. Bellamy

Theses and Dissertations--Communication Sciences and Disorders

The goal of the present study was to examine changes in the speech and language performance of patients with chronic, non-fluent aphasia over the course of a three-hour group speech and language treatment session, a time allotment comparable to intensive therapy practices. Nine participants, (three groups of three), with chronic, non-fluent aphasia were seen for a single group therapy session three hours in length. Therapeutic activities were designed to be as similar as possible for each group of participants. Each participant was individually assessed before (time 1), during (time 2), and after (time 3) the group treatment session. Assessments included …
