Exploring Practices Of Board-Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialst Physical Therapists In Addressing Needs Of Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Olga Chaikovsky

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

ABSTRACT

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex condition affecting multiple domains of development. Physical Therapists (PTs) are members of the interprofessional team addressing the needs of individuals with ASD. A lack of uniformity in evidence-based assessments and practices employed by therapists to address the needs of children with ASD exists in the literature. PTs often implement approaches that are not evidence-based but rather learned from more experienced professionals or discovered by trial and error.

Pediatric clinical specialist physical therapists (PCSPTs) are PTs who possess advanced education and clinical skills in Pediatrics. As pediatric experts, PCSPTs play a major …

Physical Therapists Clinical Instructors Perceptions, Practices And Experience When Supervising An Underperforming Student In Clinical Education, Ruth Lyons Hansen Sep 2022

Physical Therapists Clinical Instructors Perceptions, Practices And Experience When Supervising An Underperforming Student In Clinical Education, Ruth Lyons Hansen

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Physical Therapist (PT) clinical instructors’ (CIs) perceptions, practices, and experiences when supervising an underperforming student.

Background: The experience of supervising an underperforming student (UPS) in clinical education and failure to fail (FTF) are described in health professions such as nursing and medicine but there is little description of it in Physical Therapist (PT) clinical education.

Purpose: To explore the PT clinical instructors’ (CIs) perceptions, practices and experience when supervising an under-performing student, and to determine if failure to fail exists in PT clinical education and if so, what organizational, personal, and demographic factors may be related to it.

Implementing The Hodgson Red Yellow Green Mobilization Consensus Recommendation In A Medical And Surgical Icu: A Retrospective Study Exploring The Effectiveness Of An Early Mobilization Decision Protocol In Icu, Swati Patel May 2020

Implementing The Hodgson Red Yellow Green Mobilization Consensus Recommendation In A Medical And Surgical Icu: A Retrospective Study Exploring The Effectiveness Of An Early Mobilization Decision Protocol In Icu, Swati Patel

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: More than 4 million people are admitted annually to intensive care units (ICUs). Due to immobility, many ICU survivors experience significant cognitive, psychological, and physically disabling side effects regardless of admitting diagnosis. Multiple studies and quality improvement projects have shown the safety, feasibility, and benefits of early mobilization in the ICU setting. Hodgson et al (2014) published consensus recommendations for safe active mobilization of mechanically ventilated critically ill adults. To date, there is no standardized and simple triage protocol for identifying patients for early mobilization. No study so far has described operationalizing and implementing the Red-Yellow-Green system described …

Exploring The Use Of The Timed Up And Go Test To Identify Patient Fall Risk In An Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry Unit, Danielle Struble-Fitzsimmons Feb 2018

Exploring The Use Of The Timed Up And Go Test To Identify Patient Fall Risk In An Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry Unit, Danielle Struble-Fitzsimmons

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: Patient falls during hospitalization influence healthcare costs and quality, and hospitals are mandated to complete fall risk assessments on all patients. Inpatient geriatric psychiatry units have the highest fall rates in the acute care setting, and most falls in this population occur during the mobility tasks of transfers and ambulation. The Timed Up and Go (TUG) test includes these two specific functional tasks, and has been used to predict falls in other geriatric populations, but has never been tested in an inpatient geriatric psychiatry unit. The purpose of this study was to determine if the TUG is a predictive …

Effects Of Direction Time Constraints And Walking Speed On Turn Strategies And Gait Adaptations In Healthy Older And Young Adults, Dennis Torre Dec 2017

Effects Of Direction Time Constraints And Walking Speed On Turn Strategies And Gait Adaptations In Healthy Older And Young Adults, Dennis Torre

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Hip fractures can be life-threatening, debilitating, and costly. The odds for hip fracture increases from impact of sideways falls. While turning has been strongly associated with hip fracture & sideways falls, the distinction between the risks for walking-turns as opposed to low-velocity in-place turning is not clear. The present study sought to fill a gap as previous research had not compared walking-turn performance in young & healthy older adults at low-fall risk within the same study and response-conditions of speed interacting with direction-cue time constraints. Spatial-temporal variables representative of AP braking/propulsion (i.e. stride-length & speed) & ML stability (left/right H-H …

Investigating The Needs Of Parents Of Premature Infants’ Interaction In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Maureen A. Rinehimer Aug 2017

Investigating The Needs Of Parents Of Premature Infants’ Interaction In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Maureen A. Rinehimer

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Parents and/or caregivers of premature infants provide the interaction needed to promote better outcomes for these challenged infants at risk for developmental delays. This descriptive, exploratory study utilized convenience sampling. Inclusion criteria consisted of parents/caregivers who were at least 18 years of age and older with infants born 35 weeks gestation or less and currently in the NICU. This study focused on the research question: What do parents perceive they need in the NICU to enjoy interacting with their infant in the home? To collect the data needed to capture the perceptions of parent’s needs of infants in the NICU, …

The Health Status Of Older Adults Discharged Home From An Acute Care Hospital: A Descriptive Study, Colleen Chancler Mar 2017

The Health Status Of Older Adults Discharged Home From An Acute Care Hospital: A Descriptive Study, Colleen Chancler

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background. Hospitalized older adults are susceptible to adverse events reporting decreased activity, falls and dependence in activities of daily living after hospitalization. Falls incidence is higher among those in the hospital compared to community dwelling older adults. Research has demonstrated the rate of readmission to the hospital for older adults is essentially unchanged at approximately 20% over the last 20 years despite attempts to provide meaningful interventions while patients are in the hospital or once they return home.

Objective. The study objectives were to describe the health status of older adults discharged home from a hospital, to explore the impact …

Differences In Balance And Muscle Activation Strategies During Gait Initiation At Different Speeds Between Young And Middle-Aged Adults, Lynn Curtis-Vinegra Aug 2015

Differences In Balance And Muscle Activation Strategies During Gait Initiation At Different Speeds Between Young And Middle-Aged Adults, Lynn Curtis-Vinegra

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Middle-age adults’ (MA) self-report of falls are greater compared to younger adults (YA) during ambulation. A previous study found that MA compared to YA use different strategies taking one-step forward at a fast speed. No other studies have compared the effect of two different speeds on balance variables and muscle activity during gait initiation in the MA compared to YA using an instrumented walkway. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of age and speed on balance by measuring a) the Center of Pressure (COP) in two planes: COPx (sagittal) and COPy (frontal) and the Center of …

Effect Of Dual Tasking On Walking Over Even And Uneven Surfaces In Functionally Independent Community Older Adults, Olajide L. Kolawole Dec 2014

Effect Of Dual Tasking On Walking Over Even And Uneven Surfaces In Functionally Independent Community Older Adults, Olajide L. Kolawole

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

While several studies have reported a decrement in performance by older adults while walking and concurrently performing a dual task on even surfaces, to date the effects of dual tasking while walking on uneven surfaces commonly found in the community has received less attention. Thus, we sought to test the hypothesis that an incremental decrement in gait parameters will be observed, when walking on an uneven versus an even surface and furthermore, that this decrement would be dependent upon the concurrent performance of a secondary cognitive and/or motor task in functionally independent-living-community older adults.

Dynamic Gait Index assessed the subject’s …

Leadership Styles Of Clinical Coordinators And Clinical Instructors In Physical Therapy Clinical Education, Allison Kellish Dec 2014

Leadership Styles Of Clinical Coordinators And Clinical Instructors In Physical Therapy Clinical Education, Allison Kellish

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The APTA has identified the roles of the CCCE and CI as leaders in physical therapy clinical education. In the literature there appears to be an absence of studies examining the CCCE and CI leadership style and its impact on the preparation for clinical instruction, extra effort, job satisfaction and effectiveness of quality clinical education. The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership styles of CIs and CCCEs and to discern if there was a correlation between CI’s and CCCE’s perceptions of leadership style and perceptions of leadership effectiveness based upon three leadership outcomes. The second purpose of …
