A thorough needs assessment at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Largo revealed slight dissatisfaction scores on the Press Ganey survey for both the occupational therapy department and discharge planning processes. This quality improvement project, Take Charge for Therapy Discharge, implemented a two-session patient education protocol using the Cognitive Orientation to Occupational Performance (CO-OP) approach. Using the Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS), participants identified and prioritized three therapy goals and rated their perceived current performance. Results demonstrated a significant difference between the participants’ PSFS pre and post-intervention scores. Patients’ improved self-perceived goal attainment scores served as evidence that, in addition to using …

Operant conditioning of short-latency reflex (SLR) and H-reflex have been investigated in animals and humans. We modified previously established protocols for conditioning lower limb H-reflexes to up-condition the SLR in brachioradialis muscle and to investigate the effect of such conditioning on the long-latency response (LLR) of synergistic muscles. Our study included 12 healthy participants. Each participant took part in 3 baseline and 27 conditioning sessions in 6 weeks, followed by two additional sessions one month and two months after the last conditioning session. Wound prevention and management best practice guidelines and literature contain recommendations that treatment plans need to consider the client’s lifestyle but offer little guidance about the specific lifestyle factors to be considered, nor how to address these. Case studies have shown that low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LoRETA) neurofeedback is effective for many psychological disorders, but it’s effectiveness for individuals experiencing persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS) is uncertain. Individuals with PPCS (n = 7) received an eight-week LoRETA neurofeedback and heart rate variability biofeedback intervention. Change in symptoms, driving simulation performance, electroencephalographic z-score deviations, and heart rate variability were compared to PPCS (n = 9) and healthy (n = 8) control groups. Statistical analyses revealed that the intervention significantly reduced electroencephalographic z-score deviations (p < 0.005) compared to PPCS controls. Additionally, headache, nausea, and dizziness symptoms were reduced in the intervention group (p = 0.003) and the PPCS controls (p = 0.001) compared to healthy …

Transplantation of dopaminergic precursors (DPs) is a promising therapeutic strategy of Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, limited cell source for dopaminergic precursors has become a major obstacle for transplantation therapy. In the first part of the study, we demonstrated that Foxa2 is superior to Lmx1a in inducing dopaminergic neuronal differentiation from induced neural progenitor cells (iNPCs). Based on the results above and some other published results, our group demonstrated that mouse fibroblasts can be reprogrammed into induced dopaminergic precursors (iDPs) through ectopic expression of transcription factors Brn2, Sox2 and Foxa2(1). The purpose of this study was to examine the use of sensory diets in the field of occupational therapy. This study investigated the use of sensory diets among California occupational therapy practitioners. A mixed-methods design was used to collect data through an online survey. The survey was sent out to members of the Occupational Therapy Association of California (OTAC) and received 98 respondents within one month. Participants worked among various clinical settings and implemented sensory diets with various client populations. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the use of a mobile health application (mHealth app) in conjunction with energy conservation management techniques will result in a decrease in fatigue for adults with multiple sclerosis.

METHOD: Using a quantitative, exploratory, pre-posttest design, we examined outcomes associated with the use of the mHealth app, Pace My Day, by seven participants during one chosen task over two weeks. The app reinforced the use of energy conservation management techniques during the chosen task. Outcome measures included Modified Fatigue Impact Scale (MFIS) and Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM).

The study aimed to identify whether higher acquisition of rhythmic complexity levels improved gait performance, as well as beat perception and production abilities.
