Take Charge For Therapy Discharge: Outcomes Of A Patient Education Program Applying The Co-Op Approach, Kathryn Westley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A thorough needs assessment at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Largo revealed slight dissatisfaction scores on the Press Ganey survey for both the occupational therapy department and discharge planning processes. This quality improvement project, Take Charge for Therapy Discharge, implemented a two-session patient education protocol using the Cognitive Orientation to Occupational Performance (CO-OP) approach. Using the Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS), participants identified and prioritized three therapy goals and rated their perceived current performance. Results demonstrated a significant difference between the participants’ PSFS pre and post-intervention scores. Patients’ improved self-perceived goal attainment scores served as evidence that, in addition to using …

Operant Conditioning Of Human Upper-Limb Stretch Reflexes, Ehsan Abolhasani

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Operant conditioning of short-latency reflex (SLR) and H-reflex have been investigated in animals and humans. We modified previously established protocols for conditioning lower limb H-reflexes to up-condition the SLR in brachioradialis muscle and to investigate the effect of such conditioning on the long-latency response (LLR) of synergistic muscles. Our study included 12 healthy participants. Each participant took part in 3 baseline and 27 conditioning sessions in 6 weeks, followed by two additional sessions one month and two months after the last conditioning session. We found an increase in SLR magnitude in 50% of participants (by 15%±2.50). However, there was no …

The Effect Of A Voice Treatment On Facial Expression In Parkinson’S Disease: Clinical And Demographic Predictors, Amanda D. Bono

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with a wide range of motoric, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms. Impairments in facial mobility and emotional expressivity are common and can impair communication, in turn, affecting daily functioning and quality of life. Previous research suggests that the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment © (LSVT LOUD; Ramig et al., 2001, 2011) increases vocal loudness and facial expressivity in individuals with PD compared to PD and healthy controls. This study extends the literature by examining the effects of LSVT and an articulation-based control treatment (i.e., ARTIC) on multiple aspects of facial expressivity (i.e., emotional frequency …

The Effectiveness Of Neurofeedback And Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback For Individuals With Long-Term Post-Concussive Symptoms, Marquise Bonn

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Case studies have shown that low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LoRETA) neurofeedback is effective for many psychological disorders, but it’s effectiveness for individuals experiencing persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS) is uncertain. Individuals with PPCS (n = 7) received an eight-week LoRETA neurofeedback and heart rate variability biofeedback intervention. Change in symptoms, driving simulation performance, electroencephalographic z-score deviations, and heart rate variability were compared to PPCS (n = 9) and healthy (n = 8) control groups. Statistical analyses revealed that the intervention significantly reduced electroencephalographic z-score deviations (p < 0.005) compared to PPCS controls. Additionally, headache, nausea, and dizziness symptoms were reduced in the intervention group (p = 0.003) and the PPCS controls (p = 0.001) compared to healthy …

The Listening Shift: Evaluating A Communication-Strategies Training Program For Telepractice Nurses Experiencing Hearing Challenges, Raphaelle Koerber

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Workers who wish to remain employed should be supported in doing so, even if they are experiencing age-related disabilities, such as hearing loss. I aimed to better understand the strategies from which workers with hearing loss might benefit, and how they can be supported in adopting these strategies. To collect rich data, I recruited telepractice nurses who rely on listening to make critical decisions about triaging and health care recommendations. My first research question was: What strategies exist for making telephone speech more intelligible for health care providers and patients with hearing challenges? I performed a scoping review following the …

Comparison Of Analysis Techniques For Assessing Oro-Pharyngeal Swallow From Videofluoroscopy, Prasanna Venkataraman Aug 2018

Comparison Of Analysis Techniques For Assessing Oro-Pharyngeal Swallow From Videofluoroscopy, Prasanna Venkataraman

Theses and Dissertations

MBSImP® is an ordinal rating scale designed to evaluate 17 swallowing events from Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study. Use of an ordinal scale to judge swallowing impairment involves subjectivity and could affect the reliability of judgements. There is a need to validate the ordinal levels of ratings in MBSImP® with objective data, in order to improve confidence of clinical judgements. The hypothesis was that discrete objective data could be obtained for each level of rating in MBSImP® that are statistically different from the data of the subsequent rating level, which would objectively support the concept of the MBSImP® tool. Two hundred 5ml …

Selective Generation Of Dopaminergic Precursors From Human Fibroblasts By Direct Lineage Conversion, Miao He May 2018

Selective Generation Of Dopaminergic Precursors From Human Fibroblasts By Direct Lineage Conversion, Miao He

Theses & Dissertations

Transplantation of dopaminergic precursors (DPs) is a promising therapeutic strategy of Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, limited cell source for dopaminergic precursors has become a major obstacle for transplantation therapy. In the first part of the study, we demonstrated that Foxa2 is superior to Lmx1a in inducing dopaminergic neuronal differentiation from induced neural progenitor cells (iNPCs). Based on the results above and some other published results, our group demonstrated that mouse fibroblasts can be reprogrammed into induced dopaminergic precursors (iDPs) through ectopic expression of transcription factors Brn2, Sox2 and Foxa2(1). In the current study, we hypothesized that similar strategy …

Measuring Physiological Responses To Sensation In Typical Adults, Sarah Button, Kristen Christensen, Emily Minor May 2018

Measuring Physiological Responses To Sensation In Typical Adults, Sarah Button, Kristen Christensen, Emily Minor

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Objective: Sensory processing issues can have a large negative impact on the ability to participate in daily occupations such as ADLs, access to work, school and leisure environments, and social interactions (Dunn, 2001). The evidence documenting sensory processing issues in adults is sparse. Physiological information can be used as objective evidence to support the claim that those with over-responsivity to sensations are experiencing their environment differently than the typical population. Understanding more about sensory processing in adults may lead to increased recognition of the problem and more opportunities for intervention to increase occupational participation. The purpose of this quantitative study …

The Effects Of A Cognitive Training Program For Cognitively Intact Older Adults, Caroline Kinskey

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Cognitive training is a term used to describe programs that provide guided practice on tasks requiring different cognitive abilities such as memory or language. It is assumed that regular practice will improve or maintain functioning in a particular cognitive domain (e.g., memory) and those results will generalize beyond the context of training. Results have been mixed in the existing literature that has evaluated the potential benefits of cognitive training on cognitive and emotional functioning in cognitively intact older adults. This study investigated the effectiveness of a cognitive training program for older adults with no to very minimal cognitive decline. Nine …
