Clinical Scenario: Dual-tasking combines both physical and cognitive components into one therapeutic intervention. There has been limited research on the benefits of dual tasking in relation to fall risks in adults with brain injury. Currently, it is common for various therapy interventions to spend the majority of time targeting physical or cognitive components, but not both at once. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a disorder characterized by deficits or impairments in social, cognitive, and motor abilities. These developmental deficits often separate children with ASD from their typically developing peers. Children with autism often refrain from or struggle to take part in play. This is because of the deficits they experience and because there are limited opportunities that foster situations for them to be successful in play. Incorporating play into intervention has been shown to be effective with this population. Occupational therapy practitioners in their interactions with babies, young children and their families, can be change-agents who promote rich language environments as a foundation to social interactions, social participation and academic successes. OTPs may be the sole provider working with a family or may reinforce with families the plan of care developed by speech-language pathologists (SLP) or early intervention teachers. The first step for OTPs is deeper knowledge of the importance of early language exposure, social interaction and participation development in young children and approaches that promotes rich language environments.

We partnered with Wendi Trummert, DrOT, OTR/L, an occupational therapist in a school district in Puyallup, Washington. We collaborated to examine what school-based Tier II & Tier III Response to Intervention (RTI) interventions can be used by occupational therapists, teachers, and paraeducators to improve school participation in children aged 3-13 who have experienced trauma. It was found that various forms of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) interventions may reduce post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, depression, and anxiety in children age birth - 13 who have experienced trauma. This project was part of a research initiative to collaborate with Kristin Brubaker, MSOT, OTR/L, practicing pediatric occupational therapist at the Center for Therapeutic Intervention (CTI). CTI is an outpatient, private pediatric occupational therapy clinic in Gig Harbor, WA. The purpose of our project was to determine existing and effective interventions to improve social skills in adolescents, ages 11 to 18 years, with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sensory processing disorder (SPD) and other sensory processing issues. Purpose: To locate, evaluate, and summarize the evidence for effective and feasible interventions to treat hemi-inattention in inpatient rehabilitation settings and ensure knowledge translation with a collaborating clinician Timothy Rich, OTR/L and his team at Harborview Medical Center. Design: Systematic literature review, participatory active research with a collaborating clinician, and knowledge translation. Methods: Included studies that tested effectiveness of mirror therapy (MT), transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS), limb activation therapy (LAT), and visual scanning therapy (VST). 11 databases were searched to yield 31 articles included in a critically appraised topic (CAT) table. This study evaluated a manualized intervention for sensory difficulties for children with autism, ages 4-8 years, using a randomized trial design. Diagnosis of autism was confirmed using gold standard measures. Results show that the children in the treatment group (n = 17) who received 30 sessions of the occupational therapy intervention scored significantly higher (p = 0.003, d = 1.2) on Goal Attainment Scales (primary outcome), and also scored significantly better on measures of caregiver assistance in self-care (p = 0.008 d = 0.9) and socialization (p = 0.04, d = 0.7) than the Usual Care control group (n = …

Dementia results from impaired cognition, due to damage to the brain. The majority of dementia cases (60% to 80%) are classified as Alzheimer’s disease (Alzheimer’s Association, n.d.). The signs of dementia generally include, but are not limited to, decreased short term memory, decreased problem solving skills, decreased perceptual skills, and personality changes. The onset of dementia is gradual, and the course of the disease spans several years or more. In Alzheimer’s disease, the person progresses through several stages that roughly coincide with reverse developmental levels, with those in the final stages being completely dependent on others.
