Individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are 1.5 times more likely to disengage in exercise one-year post-injury despite 80% of these individuals agreeing that exercise is critical to their overall health and quality of life (Baehr. Et al., 2022). A needs assessment was conducted on why the lack of engagement in exercise exists for individuals with SCIs within fitness facilities to identify barriers preventing participation. Breast cancer related lymphedema (BCRL) of the upper extremity is a frequent sequela following axillary node dissection (AND). A recent meta-analysis by Gillespie et al. (2018), suggested a 21.4% incidence of chronic arm edema post breast cancer intervention. Gillespie et al. (2018) explained that because of a lack of diagnostic criteria for BCRL, incidence reports varied widely from less than 5% to over 50%.

Children with disabilities face challenges with accessing opportunities to play and physical activity (Owen, 2010). Statistical evidence supports the concern for the growing issue of secondary health problems related to lack of physical activity (Cooper, 1999; Council on Disabilities, 2008; Heath, 1997; National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, 2008; Spencer-Cavalier and Watkinson, 2010, US Department of Education, 2005).
