Occupational Therapy Faculty Scholarship
Entry level occupational therapy and nursing students participated in interprofessional learning activities utilizing an online electronic health record and face-to-face simulations. Student perceptions and attitudes of interprofessional learning were assessed through the SPICE-R instrument. Outcomes indicated improved communication skills and attitudes towards interprofessional approaches to care.

Interprofessional care provided in a free community-based clinic that focuses on chronic health conditions and health promotion provides an innovative solution to improve societal health. Many existing clinics provide a range of professions but few include allied health services such as occupational and physical therapy. This paper provides a description of the development and implementation of an expanded faculty-guided student-led community based primary care clinic that includes occupational and physical therapists as part of an interprofessional collaborative practice model. The correlation of emotional intelligence and success for OT and OTA students during Fieldwork II has been minimally explored, but has been shown to be positively associated. To begin to better understand this relationship, which includes cultural humility and adaptability, this preliminary literature review of current research and exploration of Fieldwork Performance Evaluation related trends is designed to lay a framework for further studies.

As occupational therapy education is becoming more mindful of disparities in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the classroom and clinical practice, adjustments in curricula need to be made to affect long term changes, especially considering the many connections to intersectionality and improved patient outcomes. This poster explores emerging best practices and important reflections when reviewing health curricula, with special attention paid to the “hidden curriculum” surrounding DEI within occupational therapy education programs. Short AbstractOccupational therapy faculty and students collaborated with an existing community based oral health care team, Ready Set Smile, which provides oral health services and education to children in preschool and elementary school settings. The goals of the project were to expand the oral health knowledge of allied health care workers, to increase knowledge and perceptions of the roles of the interprofessional team members in oral health care services, and to provide family education to the families of children at high risk for unmet dental needs. BACKGROUND Nighttime postural care (NTPC), an intervention using sleep-systems to position the body symmetrically during sleep, is particularly suited for children with severe Cerebral Palsy (CP); however, its impact yields mixed conclusions (Wynn & Wickham, 2009; Gericke, 2006).This variation may be due to the types of assessments used and lack of effective caregiver training.AIM of DISSERTATION 1) examine sleep-based measures used in previous NTPC research and 2) investigate the "sleep care positioning training program’s" (Lesson A), an online NTPC training program, feasibility to educate caregivers.METHOD Completed studies include: 1) systematic literature review of NTPC sleep-based measures and 2) randomized control …

Researchers from a University partnered with a senior housing organization and a technology provider to study the implementation of smart home technologies for seniors living independently. Smart home technologies included in home motion and pressure sensors and an Amazon Echo device. Older adults who received the technology and their designated family members were interviewed to ascertain the impact of the technology on the daily activities and communication.

Community/university partnerships play a critical role in higher education. Community-based research, service learning, guest lectures, internships, and a host of other activities illustrate the shared opportunities for students, educators, practitioners, employers, and consumers, as communities and institutions collaborate to educate the future workforce and develop an informed and engaged citizenry.
Across the spectrum of health and professional disciplines, real world learning through community-based clinical/field education1 is essential to prepare practice-ready graduates. At St. Catherine University, for example, students complete over 7,000 clinical/field placements annually across multiple degrees and disciplines (see Appendix B).
