Managing Maternal Anemia In Pregnancy: The Role Of Iron-Rich Foods And Supplementation, Carli Dibler
Managing Maternal Anemia In Pregnancy: The Role Of Iron-Rich Foods And Supplementation, Carli Dibler
InnovateHER Meeting 2026
Anemia during pregnancy is a large public health concern, which often leads to independent risk factors for fetal and maternal outcomes including postpartum hemorrhaging, cesarean sections, blood transfusions during and after the labor process, hysterectomies, preterm birth, and infectious diseases. Six level I-III studies were analyzed using the John Hopkins nursing evidence-based practice model. Findings showed that by using a combined approach of dietary intake and supplementation overall leads to better fetal and maternal outcomes compared to supplementation alone.

Advocateai: A Human-In-The-Loop Artificial Intelligence Platform To Improve Diagnostic Trajectories And Patient Empowerment In Chronic Pelvic Pain, Gayatri Bhanot, Ashley Kochans
InnovateHER Meeting 2026
Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) affects up to 27% of women globally1, yet diagnosis takes 4 – 12 years on average2 — a crisis driven by healthcare fragmentation, systemic gender bias, and a 62% rate of symptom dismissal by healthcare providers3. AdvocateAI is a human-in-the-loop AI platform designed to empower patients to accelerate their own diagnostic journey. By synthesizing fragmented medical records and patient-reported symptoms, the tool creates structured clinical summaries and personalized advocacy scripts. Here, we present our findings from discovery, including a landscape analysis of available CPP treatments, a prototype co-designed by patients, and custom …

Health-Seeking Behaviors Of Ethiopian Women In The United States: A Pilot Qualitative Study, Hanna Belay, Felicia Leammuda, Ahmed Ugbad, Beamlak Kebede
InnovateHER Meeting 2026
This study explores how Ethiopian immigrant women understand health and navigate healthcare in the United States. Using qualitative interviews with two participants, findings show that health is viewed holistically, with strong reliance on traditional remedies. Participants engage with the U.S. healthcare system selectively, often seeking care only when symptoms become severe. Barriers such as system complexity, fear, and time delays influence healthcare decisions.

Empowering Women: Understanding Neurological Changes In The Aging Brain, Joy Mckenzie
Empowering Women: Understanding Neurological Changes In The Aging Brain, Joy Mckenzie
InnovateHER Meeting 2026
Women tend to have more neurological changes than men as they age starting in their mid-30s (Mosconi, 2024). While aging is a natural process, the neurological changes can impact a woman’s personal and professional quality of life (Faubion et al., 2023; Gravini, 2023). For years, women’s neurological symptoms have been ignored by being told that their experiences are normal and just a part of life (Haver, 2025). That narrative is starting to shift with the increased awareness of changes specific to women. There are resources to assess cognitive changes such as memory, processing speed, and word finding and strategies to …

Menstrual Hygiene Screening Needs Assessment In South Dakota
Mariah M. Shafer, MD | DenYelle Kenyon Ph.D. Assoc Dean, Community Health and Engagement, MPH Program Director.
Introduction: Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is essential to women’s reproductive health; literature demonstrates there are mental, social, and economic consequences to inadequate MHM in rural and developing countries. Emerging studies show that US women who are impoverished, experiencing homelessness, or incarcerated also face poor MHM. To understand implications of poor MHM in South Dakota, a largely rural state, a thorough gynecologic health history is essential; this needs assessment explores the scope of MHM questions asked …

Implementation Of Standardized Screening And Patient Education Regarding Hpv Vaccination Within An Ob-Gyn Clinic, Kristina Krupa, Nicole Tenzel
North Texas GME Research Forum 2026
Background: Each year, millions of women become infected with Human Papillomavirus Virus (HPV). The HPV virus can cause multiple types of cancer including cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal, vaginal, and oropharyngeal. HPV vaccination has the potential to prevent majority of these cancers. Despite this, a large portion of the United States population remains unvaccinated. Standardizing screening protocols and patient education materials within our OBGYN clinic can help educate patients about the HPV vaccine benefits and facilitate shared decision-making regarding vaccination.
Methods: This ongoing quality improvement project was initially created as a single-phase initiative that involved implementation of a screening questionnaire …

Regain Confidence Postpartum: A Guide For Pelvic Floor Health, Taylor Jackson, Mary Jan Greer, Donna Carver
Fall 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
Postpartum pelvic floor dysfunction can disrupt daily occupations such as toileting, hygiene, mobility, sexual health, sleep, and infant care. These challenges often reduce confidence and limit participation. Although pelvic floor issues are common, occupational therapy has not been widely recognized in this emerging area, leaving a gap in functional, client-centered support.
This capstone project developed Regain Confidence Postpartum: A Guide for Pelvic Floor Health, an occupation-focused resource designed to help postpartum individuals understand pelvic floor dysfunction and return to meaningful routines. A needs assessment was completed through clinical observation, discussions with providers at Purely Pelvic Floor, and a review …

Breaking The Cycle: Reducing Maternal Mortality Disparities In Minnesota, Grace Hambike
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2025
A comparative analysis of Minnesota's maternal mortality rates with states implementing successful maternal health initiatives and a review of policies supporting doulas, midwives, and culturally competent care models. Conclusions show that addressing maternal mortality disparities requires systemic healthcare reforms and culturally competent interventions. Expanding access to doulas, midwives, and community-based care can significantly improve maternal outcomes. Future research should focus on long-term effects of policy changes and continued surveillance of maternal health disparities.

Exploring Dominican University Nursing Student’S Perceptions Of Economic Barriers To Accessing Essential Women’S Health Products, Annabelle E. Burke
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Access to essential feminine hygiene products, including menstrual supplies and hygiene items, is a growing economic and public health issue. Rising product prices and reliance on costly disposable products contribute to financial strain for many women. Period poverty is the lack of access to menstrual products, education, and hygiene facilities due to financial constraints, and it negatively affects women’s physical and mental health, particularly among students and low-income populations. Research shows that limited access to menstrual products affects dignity, sanitation, and emotional well-being and is compounded by social stigma and cultural silence surrounding menstruation (Brinkley & Niebuhr, 2023). Findings from …

Nursing | Student Research Posters
Childbirth is often described as one of the most meaningful experiences in a woman’s life. During this time, effective pain management is essential not only for reducing discomfort, but also for improving maternal satisfaction and minimizing unnecessary obstetric interventions. While childbirth is frequently approached as a purely physical process, it is inherently holistic, influenced by cultural, social, psychological, and emotional factors.
Growing evidence highlights the value of incorporating and educating patients and providers on non-pharmacologic strategies such as breathing techniques, massage, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, positioning ,ambulation, and continuous emotional support.
For example, a study in Sweden that found that a group …

The Impact of Roe v. Wade Overturning on Women’s Access to Medical Abortions: Exploring Alternative Care Models
Medical abortion access is heavily influenced by state laws, with restrictive policies posing significant barriers for women seeking care. These barriers include limited local resources, travel burdens, and legal restrictions, which disproportionately affect marginalized populations. The Health Belief Model (HBM) highlights how individuals' perceptions of risks, benefits, and barriers shape their health decisions, making it an ideal framework for studying this issue (Rosenstock, 1974).
This research focuses on educating California-based providers to increase access to medical abortion services for patients in restrictive states. …

Nurse-Led Education For Postpartum Depression In Primiparous Asian-American Mothers, Colleen Peralta
Nursing | Student Research Posters
The postpartum period is a critical point when women remain a vulnerable in the hospital setting. This stems from various physical, emotional and psychological changes that women face after childbirth, when patient support and attention is vital. For instance, the postpartum stage poses risk to women for complications, such as postpartum depression (PPD). When left untreated and misdiagnosed, PPD can lead to adverse maternal outcomes, such as: problems with mother-infant bonding, difficulty breastfeeding, and an increased risk for suicide (Mayo Clinic, 2022).
Asian-American mothers with postpartum depression face unique challenges, including the stigma surrounding mental health, which remains prevalent within …
