Exploring African American Single Mothers’ Experiences With Child Welfare System, Paul J. Melbourne
Exploring African American Single Mothers’ Experiences With Child Welfare System, Paul J. Melbourne
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African Americans are overrepresented in the child welfare system in New York City (NYC). They face racial and ethnic bias, complex procedures, and policies that govern child welfare. The main research question for this study explored the experiences of African American single mothers with the child welfare system. This qualitative study was guided by policy feedback theory; data were gathered from 10 African American single mothers who have had experiences with child welfare investigation within the past 10 years. Participants were interviewed using semistructured questions designed to capture their experiences with the child welfare system. The data were coded for …
Exploring Vaccination Hesitancy Among Nonmandated Nurses And Health Care Workers, Germaine Lazett Nelson
Exploring Vaccination Hesitancy Among Nonmandated Nurses And Health Care Workers, Germaine Lazett Nelson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
COVID-19 vaccinations have been mandated for most healthcare professionals providing direct patient care, but there are a group of nonmandated healthcare professionals who have been hesitant to receive the vaccine. Given prolonged hesitancy among key health professionals charged with providing direct patient care, it is crucial to understand why they are hesitant; their apprehension may impact the pool of professionals available to provide direct patient care. This is a cross-sectional quantitative study that included an online survey. The health belief model served as the theoretical framework. The research questions addressed whether there is an association between type of patient care …
Effects Of Socioeconomic Status, Demographic Characteristics, And Education On Sarcopenic Obesity, Moruf Oladele Olaleye
Effects Of Socioeconomic Status, Demographic Characteristics, And Education On Sarcopenic Obesity, Moruf Oladele Olaleye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The general problem is that although the body of research about obesity is robust, there is a lack of research addressing the problem of sarcopenic obesity. Specifically, there is a lack of research examining the statistical significance of the relationship between the independent variables of socioeconomic status, demographic characteristics, and education and the dependent variable of sarcopenic obesity. This research may advance practice and policy by lending support for developing interventions to address factors that have a statistically significant relationship with sarcopenic obesity. The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study was to identify independent variables among socioeconomic, demographic, and education …

Secondary Data Analysis Of The Association Of Screen Time With Selected Health Behaviors, Kellany Cadogan Noland
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The noticeable disparity in youth access of preventive healthcare and youth’s tendency towards excessive screen time have been linked to poor health outcomes. This issue prompted the current study, which had three core purposes: to identify associations between screen time and selected health behaviors, to identify target sociocultural and personal determinants of youth health, and to provide evidence to prompt innovation in promoting youth health via screen-based strategies. The social cognitive theory provided a context for triadic reciprocity between youth personal factors, environmental factors, and behaviors. A quantitative secondary analysis was completed using SPSS-27 to identify whether there was an …

Nurses' Experiences Caring For Patients With Opioid Use Disorder, Pamella Maureen Campbell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over the past 2 decades, opioid use in the United States has taken thousands of lives, reached the level of epidemic in 2017, and has been an area of study among scholars. The problem is health care professionals, including nurses, lack training on how to care for people with opioid use disorder (OUD). Nurses are at the frontline of patient care and understanding the nurses’ experiences in the care of patients with OUD may help to improve the patients’ quality of care. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to develop an understanding of the experiences of nurses with …

Factors Associated With Nonmedical Prescription Opioid Use And Prescription Opioid Misuse Among Rural Americans, Brittany Cox
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Opioid misuse is a rapidly evolving health epidemic in the United States, leading to opioid use disorders, overdose deaths, and disparities in treatment. The rural population may be more susceptible given socioeconomic status, less educational attainment, and lower income. The impact on specific populations is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to identify the association of nonmedical prescription opioid use (NPOU), prescription opioid misuse (POM), and treatment-seeking with race, age, sex, education, and insurance status among rural Americans. The social-ecological model (SEM) served as the theoretical framework. The SEM described the interplay between individual, relationship, community, and …

The YRBSS used in this research was the newest and most comprehensive data. The YRBSS is a national school-based survey, that is used to monitor health-related behaviors including violence, sexual behaviors (heterosexual and SMY students), intentional and unintentional injuries that contribute to suicide behaviors. Results …
Alternative Diet Practices As Predictors For Vaccine Confidence, Nancy Dolin
Alternative Diet Practices As Predictors For Vaccine Confidence, Nancy Dolin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Perceived risks and side effects have left some with a lack of confidence in the safety and efficacy of vaccines. This may lead to not adhering to the recommended vaccination schedule and result in outbreaks that have the potential to harm those who are unable to get vaccinated due to age or infirmity. It is vital to seek and address the characteristics that may predict one’s confidence in vaccines. The aim of this study was to identify whether an individual’s alternative diet behavior may be able to predict their confidence in the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The theoretical …

Length Of Stay In A Homeless Shelter And Mitigating Homelessness, Uwemedimo S. Etteyit
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractHomelessness is a major public health issue in the United States. Every night, thousands of people have no residence to call their own. Most homeless persons turn to homeless shelters for help. Despite the homeless shelters, the problem of homelessness persists. This study examined the concept that the length of time spent at a homeless shelter is related to the homeless persons mitigating their homelessness through home placement, jobs, and healthcare access. Homelessness was examined using the socioecological model with its attendant levels of influence. On the intrapersonal level, socioeconomic status, education, old age, veteran status, and disability were factors. …

Assessing Violence And Mental Health With The 2019 Nevada Youth Risk Behavioral Survey, Samantha Graham
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The effects from childhood trauma can interfere in all aspects of a child’s life, including their education. School delivery systems need to be trained to identify these risks and how to reduce further risks of re-traumatization by applying trauma-informed practices. This study addressed the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on mental health and behavioral issues. The study was guided by Bandura’s social cognitive theory and the socioecological model. The correlation between ACEs and mental health as well as ACEs and physical violence were examined based on data from the 2019 Nevada Youth Risk Behavioral Survey, which was a high …
Health-Related Quality Of Life For Veterans Transitioned Into Civilian Life, Vicki Ann Guerra
Health-Related Quality Of Life For Veterans Transitioned Into Civilian Life, Vicki Ann Guerra
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Texas veterans transitioning to civilian life have experienced health issues after discharge. There are processes to follow before seeking treatment or diagnosis for any health issue prior to military discharge. Given the gaps in the literature on veteran health, quality of life and transition to civilian life, scholars lack understanding of the transitional events that take place. Veteran health issues are impacted by medical appointment wait-times, day to day life events, and this can lead to decreased quality of life. The purpose of this mixed-methods study (N=36) was to evaluate veterans’ health related quality of life who had transitioned from …

Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), the main cause of genital herpes, is an incurable sexually transmitted infection responsible in 2018 for 18.6 million infections in the United States. HSV-2 is twice as frequent in women than in men. Women who have sex with women (WSW) have a higher prevalence of depression and drug use than women who have sex exclusively with men (WSM), which are each related to HSV-2 as they increase the likelihood of engaging in risky sexual behaviors. The purpose of this study was to assess the predictive relationship between depression status, nonprescription drug use status, and …
Relationship Between Patients Of Low Socioeconomic Status With Multiple Sclerosis And Health Care Providers, Jennifer N. Rhoads
Relationship Between Patients Of Low Socioeconomic Status With Multiple Sclerosis And Health Care Providers, Jennifer N. Rhoads
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many health care initiatives seek to improve patient–provider experiences and relationships to support patient satisfaction rates and health outcomes. However, a small amount of published research has examined the perceptions of low socioeconomic status (SES) patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) regarding their relationship with their health care provider and how these perceptions affect patient outcomes. Prioritizing communication and approachability between the health care provider and a patient can be instrumental in creating and fostering an authentic relationship. The research question for this study was designed to understand the relationship between participants of low SES who had been diagnosed with …

Legislative Efforts And Community Change To Combat Female Genital Mutilation In Egypt, Maryam Berkshire
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Female genital mutilation is recognized as a violation of human rights as it violates the bodily rights of young girls by cutting part of their bodies without their consent and leaves long term psychological, physical and sexual harm to women who were exposed to the practice. The World Health Organization estimates that 130 million girls and women are subjected to Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) in African and Middle Eastern Countries. According to a UNICEF 2020 report, Egypt will not meet the SDG goal of eradicating FGM as the decrease in the practice is too slow despite the policy and community …

Social cognitive theory was the framework of the study. Multiple linear regression and hierarchical regression were used to analyze the survey data. Results revealed …
Exploring Parent Support For School-Based Health Programs To Reduce Childhood, Alaphiah Delaney Campbell Byfield
Exploring Parent Support For School-Based Health Programs To Reduce Childhood, Alaphiah Delaney Campbell Byfield
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The rise in childhood obesity rates continues globally despite the design and implementation of social programs aimed at curtailing that phenomenon. The government of Jamaica has indicated that a whole-of-government, whole-of-society approach is needed to control obesity. The literature has shown that in Jamaica, support for being fluffy impedes progress toward addressing the problem of childhood obesity; being fluffy is considered attractive and a sign that one has a good life. Studies have shown that obese or overweight children are at risk for developing psychosocial (e.g., having low self-esteem, and underperforming academically) and medical problems (e.g., noncommunicable diseases such as …
Child Sexual Abuse And Its Effects On A Young Adult Relationship With A Sexual Partner, Friends, And Community, Miriam Cires
Child Sexual Abuse And Its Effects On A Young Adult Relationship With A Sexual Partner, Friends, And Community, Miriam Cires
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractIn the United States, child sexual abuse is a significant public health issue, but society lacks awareness and its consequences. Therefore, little is known about the influence of sociodemographic factors on a sexually abused child and the quality of relationships as a young adult. A quantitative cross-sectional study based on the social-ecological model was carried out to assess whether the presence of sexual abuse, age of abuse, frequency of abuse, abusive kindship, race, and sex predict in a sexually abused child inappropriate relationships as a young adult. Logistic regression analyses were conducted using secondary data collected from 1300 children and …
The Double Burden Of Intra-Household Malnutrition Among Mother–Child Dyads In South Africa, Puveshni Crozier
The Double Burden Of Intra-Household Malnutrition Among Mother–Child Dyads In South Africa, Puveshni Crozier
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Household-level double burden of malnutrition (HL-DBM) challenges traditional South African vertical malnutrition programs. Research has associated a household with an overweight/obese mother of reproductive age and her under 5-year-old child with signs of undernutrition (wasting, stunting, or thinness) with socioeconomic levels, maternal characteristics, features of the household, and child’s demographics. Grounded in the social determinants of health conceptual framework, this study aimed to investigate the determinants of HL-DBM in South Africa across the reproductive-child health continuum. Using the representative 2017 Wave 5 South African National Income Dynamics Study survey secondary data, a total sample of 314 homes met this non-experimental …
The Relationship Between Types Of Workplace Trauma Exposure, Burnout, And Ptsd In Mental Health Workers, Armando Dominguez
The Relationship Between Types Of Workplace Trauma Exposure, Burnout, And Ptsd In Mental Health Workers, Armando Dominguez
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Work-related traumatic exposure has been studied but has not been concisely defined in the widest range of research studying trauma exposure. Specifically, it is not known from previous research whether direct, indirect, and vicarious trauma exposure predict burnout and PTSD in acute care mental health care workers. The emotional processing theory was used as theoretical foundation informing this study as the habituation of response to stress and trauma has been shown to occur incidentally and cumulatively; the theory supports the concept of dichotomous and continuous type of trauma exposure over time. The purpose of this study was to use a …
Beliefs About Food Education And Healthy Food Consumption In Food Insecure Areas, Eboni Drummond
Beliefs About Food Education And Healthy Food Consumption In Food Insecure Areas, Eboni Drummond
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many food desert residents suffer from food insecurity as a result of residing in communities where access to affordable, healthy foods is limited. This limited access can make it difficult for these residents to consume healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables, on a consistent basis. To increase access to healthy foods, interventions such as the building of supermarkets, the introduction of mobile farmers markets or mobile produce markets, and the conversion of local corner stores into healthy corner stores are often introduced to food desert communities. However, these intervention efforts fail to focus on non-physical factors, such as the …
