Length Of Stay In A Homeless Shelter And Mitigating Homelessness, Uwemedimo S. Etteyit

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractHomelessness is a major public health issue in the United States. Every night, thousands of people have no residence to call their own. Most homeless persons turn to homeless shelters for help. Despite the homeless shelters, the problem of homelessness persists. This study examined the concept that the length of time spent at a homeless shelter is related to the homeless persons mitigating their homelessness through home placement, jobs, and healthcare access. Homelessness was examined using the socioecological model with its attendant levels of influence. On the intrapersonal level, socioeconomic status, education, old age, veteran status, and disability were factors. …

The effects from childhood trauma can interfere in all aspects of a child’s life, including their education. School delivery systems need to be trained to identify these risks and how to reduce further risks of re-traumatization by applying trauma-informed practices. This study addressed the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on mental health and behavioral issues. The study was guided by Bandura’s social cognitive theory and the socioecological model. The correlation between ACEs and mental health as well as ACEs and physical violence were examined based on data from the 2019 Nevada Youth Risk Behavioral Survey, which was a high …

Health-Related Quality Of Life For Veterans Transitioned Into Civilian Life, Vicki Ann Guerra Jan 2022

Health-Related Quality Of Life For Veterans Transitioned Into Civilian Life, Vicki Ann Guerra

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Texas veterans transitioning to civilian life have experienced health issues after discharge. There are processes to follow before seeking treatment or diagnosis for any health issue prior to military discharge. Given the gaps in the literature on veteran health, quality of life and transition to civilian life, scholars lack understanding of the transitional events that take place. Veteran health issues are impacted by medical appointment wait-times, day to day life events, and this can lead to decreased quality of life. The purpose of this mixed-methods study (N=36) was to evaluate veterans’ health related quality of life who had transitioned from …

Relationship Between Patients Of Low Socioeconomic Status With Multiple Sclerosis And Health Care Providers, Jennifer N. Rhoads

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many health care initiatives seek to improve patient–provider experiences and relationships to support patient satisfaction rates and health outcomes. However, a small amount of published research has examined the perceptions of low socioeconomic status (SES) patients diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) regarding their relationship with their health care provider and how these perceptions affect patient outcomes. Prioritizing communication and approachability between the health care provider and a patient can be instrumental in creating and fostering an authentic relationship. The research question for this study was designed to understand the relationship between participants of low SES who had been diagnosed with …

Exploring Parent Support For School-Based Health Programs To Reduce Childhood, Alaphiah Delaney Campbell Byfield

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The rise in childhood obesity rates continues globally despite the design and implementation of social programs aimed at curtailing that phenomenon. The government of Jamaica has indicated that a whole-of-government, whole-of-society approach is needed to control obesity. The literature has shown that in Jamaica, support for being fluffy impedes progress toward addressing the problem of childhood obesity; being fluffy is considered attractive and a sign that one has a good life. Studies have shown that obese or overweight children are at risk for developing psychosocial (e.g., having low self-esteem, and underperforming academically) and medical problems (e.g., noncommunicable diseases such as …

Hospital Readmission Reduction Penalties And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Readmissions, Anthony Aduro Jan 2022

Hospital Readmission Reduction Penalties And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Readmissions, Anthony Aduro

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a serious disease that affects the respiratory system, creating poor patient outcomes. Additionally, persons with COPD have higher hospital readmission rates than other patient populations. Not only is hospital readmission indicative of poor patient outcomes, but hospital readmissions are costly to healthcare organizations as well. High readmission rates are associated with wasted resources and money, and negatively impact organizational performance. The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) implemented the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP) to reduce the rate of avoidable hospital readmissions for diseases including COPD. However, how HRRP penalties have impacted readmission …
