Using Multi-Theory Model (Mtm) To Predict Intention To Promote Physical Activity By Primary Care Providers, Shirley Mcclendon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Physical inactivity persists as a public health concern worldwide and results in more than a million deaths per year. This modifiable behavior can result in improved health when primary care providers (PCPs) communicate recommendations to patients and behavior change is supported. In this study, a quantitative cross-sectional design was used to investigate the intentions of PCPs in providing physical activity counseling, using the constructs of the multi-theory model (MTM) of health behavior change as the theoretical framework. An anonymous 37-item electronic survey was administered to participants practicing primary care and family medicine from rural areas in the Southeastern region of …

Increasing rates of adolescent unwanted pregnancies can be detrimental to families and the health of the infant. Rates of teen pregnancy among Blacks, Whites, Asians, and other races has decreased; however, the Latino population has not seen similar declining numbers. The Hispanic population currently has the highest rate of teen pregnancy that continues to increase in comparison to any other racial–ethnic group. In this study involving data from the Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System, a sample of 17,303 was used. Chi-square analyses and descriptive frequencies were used to identify associations between teen pregnancy and sexual behaviors; and how existing programs …

Adverse Childhood/Adolescent Experiences And Risk Of Recruitment Into Sex Trafficking, Shwana Coleman Jan 2023

Adverse Childhood/Adolescent Experiences And Risk Of Recruitment Into Sex Trafficking, Shwana Coleman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Human trafficking victims are negatively impacted by the process of coercion, kidnapping, and forced sexual interactions. Previous research studies showed that sex trafficking impacts victims’ mental health. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate whether adverse childhood/adolescent experiences (i.e., substance abuse, psychological abuse, and physical abuse) influence recruitment to sex trafficking in the United States and whether age acts as a moderator. The health belief model provided the theoretical framework for the study that includes data from 2010–2015 collected by the Polaris Project, a global sex trafficking database. Convenience sampling was done to delineate the study variables and …

Narrative Inquiry Into Postsecondary Transition Outcomes For Young Adults With Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities, Eric R. Sarrett Aug 2022

Narrative Inquiry Into Postsecondary Transition Outcomes For Young Adults With Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities, Eric R. Sarrett

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) continue to struggle with community engagement despite decades of research and policy initiatives addressing postsecondary transition. Evidence shows that persons with IDD are engaging in employment, postsecondary education, independent living, socialization, and other roles at significantly diminished rates, yet little data exists describing this participation in the voices of those affected. The purpose of this narrative inquiry was to describe community integration of persons with IDD in the decade following postsecondary transition in their own words. Critical disability theory was used as a lens to explore the successes and failures of public …

AbstractThe United States has a higher rate of fetal death compared to other industrialized nations. Although many studies on the factors that contribute to fetal death have been conducted among women in general, little of this phenomenon is known among women who have had a previous Cesarean section (C-section). The purpose of this study was to explore the factors of fetal death among women with a previous C-section(s) and offer suggestions for interventions. The social determinants of health theory was used with other social constructs to provide a theoretical and conceptual framework for the study. As part of the cross-sectional …

The Relationship Between Types Of Workplace Trauma Exposure, Burnout, And Ptsd In Mental Health Workers, Armando Dominguez Jan 2022

The Relationship Between Types Of Workplace Trauma Exposure, Burnout, And Ptsd In Mental Health Workers, Armando Dominguez

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Work-related traumatic exposure has been studied but has not been concisely defined in the widest range of research studying trauma exposure. Specifically, it is not known from previous research whether direct, indirect, and vicarious trauma exposure predict burnout and PTSD in acute care mental health care workers. The emotional processing theory was used as theoretical foundation informing this study as the habituation of response to stress and trauma has been shown to occur incidentally and cumulatively; the theory supports the concept of dichotomous and continuous type of trauma exposure over time. The purpose of this study was to use a …

This study examined the efficacy of the Get With The Guidelines (GWTG)-Stroke program in stroke belt hospitals (SBHs) compared to non-stroke belt hospitals (NSBHs) regarding disparities related to mortality and acute ischemic stroke (AIS) treatment (i.e., recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator [r-tPA] rates, Door-to-Needle [DTN], Door-to-Imaging [DTI]). Use of the GWTG-Stroke program was assessed to determine if SBHs and NSBHs were quantitatively equivalent in terms of specific core stroke measures. This quantitative employed an equivalence study design with over 2.9 …

Hospital Readmission Reduction Penalties And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Readmissions, Anthony Aduro Jan 2022

Hospital Readmission Reduction Penalties And Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Readmissions, Anthony Aduro

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a serious disease that affects the respiratory system, creating poor patient outcomes. Additionally, persons with COPD have higher hospital readmission rates than other patient populations. Not only is hospital readmission indicative of poor patient outcomes, but hospital readmissions are costly to healthcare organizations as well. High readmission rates are associated with wasted resources and money, and negatively impact organizational performance. The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) implemented the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program (HRRP) to reduce the rate of avoidable hospital readmissions for diseases including COPD. However, how HRRP penalties have impacted readmission …

Social cognitive theory was the framework of the study. Multiple linear regression and hierarchical regression were used to analyze the survey data. Results revealed …

Beliefs About Food Education And Healthy Food Consumption In Food Insecure Areas, Eboni Drummond Jan 2022

Beliefs About Food Education And Healthy Food Consumption In Food Insecure Areas, Eboni Drummond

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many food desert residents suffer from food insecurity as a result of residing in communities where access to affordable, healthy foods is limited. This limited access can make it difficult for these residents to consume healthy foods, such as fruits and vegetables, on a consistent basis. To increase access to healthy foods, interventions such as the building of supermarkets, the introduction of mobile farmers markets or mobile produce markets, and the conversion of local corner stores into healthy corner stores are often introduced to food desert communities. However, these intervention efforts fail to focus on non-physical factors, such as the …

There has been a continuous increase in the use of e-cigarettes among adolescents. The growth threatens to nullify the years of successfully reducing cigarette smoking among this age demographic. Additionally, the increase has been a concern for public healthcare workers due to the limited research on the effects of long-term use of e-cigarettes on adolescents. I investigated the possible side effects of exposure to e-cigarette advertisements and the use of e-cigarettes. Additionally, the study reviewed the relationship between the age e-cigarette use was initiated and the subsequent use of cigarettes. The conceptual framework was based on the multi-theory model and …

Perceptions Of Contraceptive Practice Among Arab American Victims Of Intimate Partner Violence, Linda Humaidan-Zayed Jan 2022

Perceptions Of Contraceptive Practice Among Arab American Victims Of Intimate Partner Violence, Linda Humaidan-Zayed

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There has been limited research on Arab Americans as they are an unidentified minority population. The specific research problem addressed through this study is that there is little research pertaining to the role of intimate partner violence (IPV) in poor contraceptive practice among Arab Americans, contributing to the larger problem of unwanted pregnancies, reproductive coercion, and other aspects of reproductive health. The problem with a high prevalence rate of IPV among Arab American women is that they are more susceptible to becoming pregnant and not accessing the reproductive health services that they may need. Thus, the purpose of this qualitative …
