Provider Education Increasing Recommendation For Human Papillomavirus Vaccination, Tiffany Charest Skinner
Provider Education Increasing Recommendation For Human Papillomavirus Vaccination, Tiffany Charest Skinner
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) was the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States in 2018 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC established the Healthy People 2020 initiative for HPV vaccination uptake of 80% to effectively eliminate HPV associated cancers. The project site, a rural multispecialty clinic in the Mid-Atlantic United States reported a 3% vaccination compliance rate, well under the national average and the benchmark of 80% recommended by the CDC. The practice-focused question for this project was to determine how education of primary providers will increase recommendation rates for vaccination of HPV. …
Staff Instruction On Patient Health Questionnaire And Collaborative Care Model In Primary Care, Jennifer Carton
Staff Instruction On Patient Health Questionnaire And Collaborative Care Model In Primary Care, Jennifer Carton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The DNP project examined the effectiveness of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Collaborative Care Model (CCM) as a practice protocol for patients suffering from depression in primary care to address the problem of a shortage in mental health specialists. Research reveals an increase in Americans suffering from depression. Many primary care clinics do not have a practice protocol in place to screen and manage depression. The project's purpose was to develop a lesson plan to instruct staff on the PHQ-9 and CCM to implement into their practice. The project questions were if the lesson plan developed by the …
Use Of Spanish Audio Podcast To Educate Visually Challenged Hispanics With Diabetes, Baiju Issac
Use Of Spanish Audio Podcast To Educate Visually Challenged Hispanics With Diabetes, Baiju Issac
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes is the leading cause of death among the Hispanic population, requiring solutions at the individual, community, and population levels. Self-management helps to manage diabetes and prevent complications, but it is a challenge in nursing practice. Health care providers use printed information to teach patients about self-management of diabetes. However, patients with visual impairment are not able to use these resources. Limited English proficiency, low health literacy, and visual challenges result in the underutilization of health care services within Hispanic communities. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop a Spanish audio podcast and lesson plan as teaching tools …
A Staff Educational Model For Prevention Of Type 2 Diabetes In The Primary Care Setting, Mieshia Staples Clark
A Staff Educational Model For Prevention Of Type 2 Diabetes In The Primary Care Setting, Mieshia Staples Clark
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic, debilitating disease affecting millions of Americans. Though preventable, it is the most common form of diabetes in the United States, costing the U.S. health care system billions of dollars annually. Lifestyle modifications taught, encouraged, and supported in established, evidence-based diabetes prevention programs (DPP) are proven to be more effective than medications alone in preventing Type 2 diabetes. While DPPs are cost-effective and can reduce or delay the incidence of Type 2 diabetes, they are greatly underutilized due to primary care providers’lack of knowledge about the benefits and availability of these programs and also due …

Understanding Male Perpetrated Intimate Partner Violence And Women’S Demands For Condom Use, Linda Musu Edwards
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Sub-Saharan Africa is host to more than 70% (25.5 million) of people with HIV/AIDS. More than half of the reported cases of people living with HIV/AIDS are women who are twice as likely to contract HIV than males in sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of this study guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior was to determine if a relationship between female demands for male partner condom use and male perpetrated intimate partner violence (MPIPV) in opposite sex cohabitating or married couples, as well as examine the relationship between the risk factors of age, education level, socioeconomic status, history of MPIPV, …

Evidence-Based Strategies For Improving Medication Adherence Among Psychiatric Patients: A Systematic Review, Omah S. Tsikada
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nonadherence to psychotropic medications among patients with serious and persistent psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, is approximately 70%. Nonadherence is a common barrier to the treatment of individuals with mental health disorders. However, there is limited awareness of evidence-based interventions and strategies to address this problem. Therefore, the question for this project asks whether a systematic review can identify strategies to improve adherence of psychotropic medications among individuals with serious and persistent mental illness. The purpose of this systematic review was to explore the evidence-based strategies that can aid in increasing medication adherence in patients with mental health …
Nursing Home Caregivers’ Knowledge Of Decubitus Ulcer Prevention Strategies, Shola Akinfiresoye
Nursing Home Caregivers’ Knowledge Of Decubitus Ulcer Prevention Strategies, Shola Akinfiresoye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Decubitus ulcers (DUs) were a constant concern among the residents of the nursing home in this project. Prolonged immobility, sensory impairment, and urinary incontinence are some of the factors found in the literature as the causes of the disease. However, the lack of useful knowledge regarding evidence-based practices (EBPs) to prevent and treat DUs also contributed to the higher incidence rates at the nursing home. The purpose of this DNP- project was to evaluate the caregivers’ knowledge of EBPs to prevent and treat DUs at the facility. The IOWA Model of Evidence-Based Practice, which healthcare practitioners use to guide clinical …

Nurse Practitioner Approach To Care For Peripheral Vascular Disease, Jessica R. Wozniak
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Amputation Coalition indicates that there were approximately 2 million people with limb loss in the United States primarily caused by peripheral vascular disease in 2019. Those with amputation related to vascular disease have a 5-year mortality rate. The gap in clinical practice at the facility used for this project is that there were no comprehensive program guidelines for nurse practitioners and other health care professionals working with people who are at risk for vascular intervention or limb loss. The practice-focused question was answered that an interprofessional team did develop a prototype for a comprehensive peripheral vascular program that serves …

Search For The Cause Of Vaping Associated Lung Injury In Adolescents, Alexandra E. Krueger
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
In August 2019 an unexplained, exponential rise in severe respiratory illnesses in previously healthy young adults, swept across America catching the attention of medical providers. Hospital admissions for lung injury increased 10-fold over two months’ time leaving practitioners scrambling for answers. All affected patients were found to have used e-cigarettes prior to symptoms and endorsed using nicotine and marijuana vape pens. The medical community quickly began to search for the cause of these vaping associated lung injuries. Understanding the mechanism of injury is important in order to assist in educating the public about the risks associated with e-cigarettes. The aim …

The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to examine recovering substance
abusers' perceptions about the usefulness of mandatory drug testing in schools for adolescent substance abuse. Illegal substance abuse has reached epidemic proportions as more than half of U.S. adolescents, aged 12 to 17 years, have engaged in illicit drug use. Substance abuse information has been a part of school health education programs since the United States Drug Free Schools and Communities Act of 1986. Despite substance abuse education and school programs about the effects of drug use, many high school students abuse illicit drugs. Face-to-face interviews were conducted …
Effectiveness Of An Educational Intervention To Reduce Preanalytical Specimen Errors, Carol Ann Lineberry
Effectiveness Of An Educational Intervention To Reduce Preanalytical Specimen Errors, Carol Ann Lineberry
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A rejected blood specimen can be very costly to a hospital as well as to the patient. Many errors occur in the preanalytical phase in which nurses and assistive personnel are often involved because they are usually not trained to do so. This staff education project was designed to decrease the number of laboratory rejections of blood specimens in a local hospital setting. Knowles’s adult learning theory was combined with the knowledge translation framework, proposed by Fredericks, Martorella, and Catallo, so that evidence-based changes in practice could occur more readily. There is a 20-minute in-service educational intervention followed by an …

Improving First Dose Administration Of The Hpv Vaccine For Adolescents In A Pediatric Primary Care Clinic, Scarlett Mikesell-Pierce
DNP Projects
BACKGROUND: Nationwide more than 90% of cervical cancer cases are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Cervical cancer can be largely prevented by administration of the HPV vaccine for children before becoming sexually active. However, vaccination rates in the United States, remain low at 60%, and only 39.7% through series of completion, despite the strong evidence to support the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine. Research indicates a clinician’s recommendation, providing information and opportunity for discussion about the vaccine are strong motivators for parents to vaccinate their children, regardless of ethnicity. This study addresses the barriers to parent/caregiver intent to …
Perceptions Of Newly Licensed Registered Nurses About Homecare As A Practice Area, Tamara M. Kelley Frazier
Perceptions Of Newly Licensed Registered Nurses About Homecare As A Practice Area, Tamara M. Kelley Frazier
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The demand for competent nurses working in a home care setting continues to grow because of decreased length of stay in hospitals and population needs for chronic care management when homebound. Nursing educational programs introduce students to community health and home care nursing, which could influence a student nurse's choice of home health care as an initial practice setting. This qualitative study examined the perceptions of newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) about home care as an initial practice area. Ten NLRNs not working in home health care areas responded to 16 open-ended interview questions that were based on the career …
