Infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in multiple myeloma (MM), a cancer of the immune system. Vaccination clinical efficacy endpoints have not been demonstrated, and there are limited data on surrogate markers of efficacy. This pilot study evaluated sequential immunologic markers after standard pneumococcal vaccination (PV) in patients with MM and non-MM controls. Vaccination was standard for PV (PCV13 or PPV23), with laboratory testing at baseline and at 2, 4, 12 and 24 weeks after vaccination. Peningkatan konsumsi minuman kemasan (soft drinks/ bevereges) tampak nyata di dunia, termasuk Indonesia. Peningkatan ini terutama terjadi di kelompok usia muda. Konsumsi minuman tersebut berkaitan dengan gangguan metabolik, antara lain obesitas, toleransi glukosa terganggu (TGT) dan diabetes melitus. TB merupakan tantangan bagi pengendalian Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) karena merupakan infeksi oportunistik terbanyak pada orang dengan HIV/AIDS (ODHA). TB dapat meningkatkan progresivitas HIV dan meningkatkan risiko kematian bagi penderita HIV. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui prediktor yang berhubungan dengan kejadian TB pada ODHA di salah satu RS tahun 2014-2016. Desain studi yang digunakan adalah cross sectional dengan menggunakan data register ART dan Rekam Medis. Sampel berjumlah 817 pasien HIV. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan multiple cox regression. Kematian bayi didefinisikan sebagai kematian yang terjadi pada tahun pertama kehidupan. Angka kematian bayi di Indonesia dan Kamboja sendiri masih berada diatas AKB Asia Tenggara, sedangkan Filipina sudah sama dengan AKB Asia Tenggara. Jarak kelahiran merupakan salah satu faktor yang memegang peran penting pada kematian bayi. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh jarak kelahiran terhadap kematian bayi di Indonesia, Filipina dan Kamboja. Penelitian menggunakan data dari Demographic Health Survey (DHS). Desain penelitian adalah cross sectional dan sampel pada masing-masing negara berjumlah 10.162, 4.741 dan 4.330 bayi. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan, jarak kelahiran < 18 bulan memiliki risiko paling besar terhadap kematian bayi di Indonesia (OR = 2,43: 95% CI 1,26 - 4,70), Kamboja (OR = 4,39: 95% CI 1,76 - 10,94) dibandingkan jarak kelahiran 18 - 23 bulan, 24 - 35 bulan dan > 36 bulan. Stigma terhadap ODHA menjadi salah satu hambatan paling besar dalam pencegahan, perawatan, pengobatan, dan dukungan HIV/AIDS. Pengetahuan tentang HIV/AIDS mempengaruhi terjadinya stigma terhadap ODHA. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui hubungan pengetahuan tentang HIV/AIDS dengan stigma terhadap ODHA di kalangan remaja usia 15-19 tahun di Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan data Survei Demografi dan Kesehatan Indonesia (SDKI) Tahun 2012 dengan disain cross-sectional. Sampel penelitian sebanyak 8.316 orang. Hasil studi menunjukkan 71,63% remaja mempunyai stigma terhadap ODHA, 49,10% remaja mempunyai pengetahuan yang kurang tentang HIV. Induction of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) has been demonstrated to decrease body weight and improve insulin sensitivity in several models of obesity in rodents. To further study the role of HO-1 in adipose tissue, we created an adipose-specific HO-1 knockout mouse model. Male and female mice were fed either a control or a high-fat diet for 30 weeks. Body weights were measured weekly and body composition, fasting blood glucose and insulin levels were determined every six weeks. Adipocyte-specific knockout of HO-1 had no significant effect on body weight in mice fed a high-fat diet but increased body weight in female mice …

In December 2016, a panel of experts in microbiology, nutrition and clinical research was convened by the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics to review the definition and scope of prebiotics. Consistent with the original embodiment of prebiotics, but aware of the latest scientific and clinical developments, the panel updated the definition of a prebiotic: a substrate that is selectively utilized by host microorganisms conferring a health benefit. This definition expands the concept of prebiotics to possibly include non-carbohydrate substances, applications to body sites other than the gastrointestinal tract, and diverse categories other than food. Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) continue to pose a global threat. Waterfowl are the main reservoir and are responsible for the spillover of AIVs to other hosts. This study was conducted as part of routine surveillance activities in Bangladesh and it reports on the serological and molecular detection of H5N1 AIV subtype. A total of 2169 cloacal and 2191 oropharyngeal swabs as well as 1725 sera samples were collected from live birds including duck and chicken in different locations in Bangladesh between the years of 2013 and 2014. Over 30% of adults in the US are obese. A primary contributor to obesity is an unhealthy diet related to imbalanced macronutrients. Diets higher in protein (PRO) are associated with increased energy expenditure (EE) and reduced food intake. The objective of this pilot study was to determine if protein source at breakfast influences EE in young men (n=4; ages 18-35). Studies in Pseudomonas aeruginosa have suggested that the TonB energy transduction system directly contributes to efflux-mediated antibiotic resistance, ostensibly by energizing one or more efflux systems. We have found ∆tonB strains of Escherichia coli to similarly be more sensitive to certain antibiotics relative to wild-type strains. To test the hypothesis that this enhanced sensitivity involved the energization of efflux systems, sensitivity patterns for a variety of antibiotics were evaluated using a set of strains differentially lacking genes encoding the Acr efflux system, the universal outer membrane efflux portal TolC, and TonB. Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a water-borne infectious bacterium that is found in both clinical (hospitals) and non-clinical environments. This human pathogen is commonly recovered from respiratory tract infections. A recent study at a hospital in Taiwan suggested that dry patient charts can serve as a vehicle of transmission of this bacterium⁷. Background and Significance. The leishmaniases are a diverse group of diseases with four major clinical manifestations: cutaneous, mucocutaneous, visceral, and diffuse. Approximately 21 Leishmania species and 30 sandfly vectors have been implicated in human leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis is endemic in 88 countries, 72 are developing countries. Currently, 350 million people live in leishmaniasis-endemic areas around the world. The true incidence of the disease is not known. However, the estimated incidence for visceral leishmaniasis is 500,000 cases per year, and for cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis 1.5-2 million cases per year.
