Iron Homeostasis And Manganese Exposure Occupational Cross-Sectional Study Of A Welder Population, Meredith Robbins

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Manganese exposure is a serious occupational health hazard for many welders, smelters, and miners. Manganese exposure may result in Parkinson-like symptoms. It has been hypothesized that altered iron concentrations in the brain could also lead to neurological symptoms similar to what appears in those with chronic exposer to manganese. Therefore, the goal of this project is to explore the relationship between manganese and hepcidin as an indicator of altered iron homeostasis. Population demographics were collected from semi-trailer factory workers in a cross-sectional study via a questionnaire. Demographic information includes age, race, and weight. Toenail clippings and questionnaires were collected on …

Understanding The Role Of Family-Specific Resources For Immigrant Workers, Faviola Robles-Saenz, Rebecca M. Brossoit, Tori L. Crain, Leslie Hammer, Jacqueline R. Wong

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Very few studies to date have examined immigrant workers’ (i.e., workers who were not born in the United States) experiences of the work-family interface. In a sample of healthcare workers across two time points, the present study evaluates the role of different family-specific resources for immigrant workers compared to native-born workers (i.e., workers born in the U.S.). The results suggest that family-specific support from coworkers is especially beneficial for reducing immigrant workers’ experiences of family-to-work conflict. For both native-born and immigrant workers, those who experience more family-specific support from supervisors and coworkers, and those who work in an organization that …

Trajectories Of Covid-19 Vaccine Intentions Among Us Adults: The Role Of Race And Ethnicity, Michael D. Niño, Brittany N. Hearne, Tianji Cai

Sociology and Criminology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research examining whether intentions to get a COVID-19 vaccine change over time is scarce. Moreover, the deep and pervasive history of medical racism in the U.S. has created a context in which some racial and ethnic groups exhibit greater levels of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy; yet few researchers have attempted to determine whether these patterns persist with time. The purpose of this study was twofold: (a.) assess the role of time in COVID-19 vaccine intentions from April 2020 to January 2021, and (b.) examine whether race and ethnicity shape COVID-19 vaccine intention trajectories. Data were drawn from 9 waves of the …

Unintended Consequences Of Air Cleaning Chemistry, Douglas B. Collins, Delphine K. Farmer

Faculty Journal Articles

Amplified interest in maintaining clean indoor air associated with the airborne transmission risks of SARS-CoV-2 have led to an expansion in the market for commercially available air cleaning systems. While the optimal way to mitigate indoor air pollutants or contaminants is to control (remove) the source, air cleaners are a tool for use when absolute source control is not possible. Interventions for indoor air quality management include physical removal of pollutants through ventilation or collection on filters and sorbent materials, along with chemically reactive processes that transform pollutants or seek to deactivate biological entities. This perspective intends to highlight the …

Rise In Mesoamerican Endemic Nephropathy (Men) In Migrant Population In Exchange For Work; Is It Worth The Trade-Off?, Katie Schmitz

Theses and Graduate Projects

The increased demand of sugarcane in Costa Rica and the lack of occupational opportunities in Nicaragua has resulted in an increase in migrant sugarcane workers. Because many individuals cannot afford proper documentation for immigration, a significant number cross the border undocumented looking for financial stability. The vast availability of sugarcane work in Costa Rica provides Nicaraguan migrants with an opportunity for work, however, they are often paid less than minimum wage due to their undocumented immigration status. Migrant workers are subject to harsh working conditions including extreme physical exertion, dehydration, and heat exposure. The combination of this trifecta seen in …

Lambda-Cyhalothrin Used As An Insecticide In Agriculture: Study Of Biomarker Toxicokinetics To Monitor Worker Exposure, Michèle Bouchard, Jonathan Côté, Rania Khemiri

Neutralization Of Il-33 Modifies The Type 2 And Type 3 Inflammatory Signature Of Viral Induced Asthma Exacerbation, Kristi J. Warren, Jill A. Poole, Jenea M. Sweeter, Jane M. Devasure, John D. Dickinson, R. Stokes Peebles, Todd A. Wyatt

Journal Articles: Environmental, Agricultural & Occupational Health

BACKGROUND: Respiratory viral infections are one of the leading causes of need for emergency care and hospitalizations in asthmatic individuals, and airway-secreted cytokines are released within hours of viral infection to initiate these exacerbations. IL-33, specifically, contributes to these allergic exacerbations by amplifying type 2 inflammation. We hypothesized that blocking IL-33 in RSV-induced exacerbation would significantly reduce allergic inflammation.

METHODS: Sensitized BALB/c mice were challenged with aerosolized ovalbumin (OVA) to establish allergic inflammation, followed by RSV-A2 infection to yield four treatment groups: saline only (Saline), RSV-infected alone (RSV), OVA alone (OVA), and OVA-treated with RSV infection (OVA-RSV). Lung outcomes included …
