Au cours des dernières années, plusieurs auteurs ont remis en cause le niveau de protection accordé aux travailleurs par la valeur seuil reconnue pour le béryllium (Be) et ses sels (VEMP Québec, TLV (TWA) ACGIH). La prévalence des effets associés au Be suggère que les risques sont en fonction de sa spéciation. Par ailleurs, il semble que les particules fines constituent la fraction d’intérêt pour l’occurrence de tels effets. Pour bien expliquer l’objet de ce projet de recherche, nous allons d’abord recourir à une analogie. Supposons deux personnes de même poids qui sont invitées chez des amis. Cette recherche s'inscrit dans la foulée des travaux publiés au Québec depuis les années 1990 qui ont contribué à l'émergence d'un nouveau champ de recherche sur le travail rémunéré chez les étudiants. Ces travaux s'intéressent plus particulièrement à l'incidence du travail rémunéré sur les études. Cependant, rares sont ceux qui ont directement abordé les atteintes potentielles à la santé en lien avec le travail rémunéré des étudiants, notamment les accidents de travail, les troubles musculo-squelettiques (TMS), la détresse psychologique et la fatigue.

Certains problèmes respiratoires sont observés chez les machinistes travaillant avec des fluides de coupe solubles (FC). Ces problèmes pourraient être reliés aux aérosols contenant des microorganismes présents dans les systèmes de FC. Pour mieux comprendre les effets de ces aérosols sur la santé humaine, l’environnement de travail doit être caractérisé. Les auteurs ont examiné l’effet combiné du bruit et de l’exposition à des substances chimiques sur l’audition en utilisant des données humaines et animales de la littérature scientifique. Ils constatent qu’il n’existe qu’une cinquantaine d’études dans lesquelles l’exposition tant au bruit qu’aux substances chimiques est caractérisée avec suffisamment de précision et de fiabilité. Les problèmes de santé mentale sont en recrudescence dans les organisations. Jusqu’à maintenant, on connait des approches de traitement qui réduisent les symptômes de la maladie. Toutefois, il est clairement démontré que malgré l’amélioration du fonctionnement des personnes, celle-ci n’est pas associée nécessairement à un retour au travail. Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) comprise more than one third of all cancers, and are increasing worldwide. The most common NMSC are Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC). Studies on humans and animals suggest that sunlight and arsenic play important roles in the pathogenesis of these skin malignancies. However, the number of epidemiological studies focusing on NMSC in workers exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation or airborne arsenic is limited, and the findings are contradictory.

This paper presents the findings of a 2011 study that evaluated the effectiveness of the Construction Induction Training (CIT) scheme (White Card) in the housing and civil construction sectors. This mixed method study collected data in three phases through: the segregated statistics of the Lost Time Injuries and Diseases (LTI/Ds), a broad industry questionnaire, and 82 interviews with managers and construction workers working in metropolitan and regional areas. Female hairdressers in Western Australia were surveyed to determine the occurrence of health problems that may be associated with their work environment. The cohort of 238 hairdressers reported poor health behaviours including a poor dietary and fluid intake; a high prevalence of smoking; and a low level of glove usage when undertaking wet work and handling non-discolouring chemicals. Younger hairdressers were found to be most at risk of increased respiratory illness, musculoskeletal problems, skin conditions, bowel issues and general poor health. This paper examines the power that managers have to impact on workplace safety and how in mixed method studies our preconceptions about the hardness and softness of the relevant data may be misplaced. The civil construction industry (CCI) in WA provides the case for this discussion. In this paper we discuss the findings of two large studies conducted during 2005/06 that illuminated the role of managers as change agents. We draw the findings together to conceptualise and model the leadership styles and behaviours that appear to be successful in reshaping organisational safety culture. The first study identified the instrumental influence that managers have on the safety culture within organisations. The second study revealed the influential role of managers as change agents during a cultural change initiative when they applied a flexible approach using formal and informal agencies of change. Dust monitoring data collected over a period of 5 years at a remote Australian mine site were pooled in order to create a large data set for analysis. Results adjusted for a 12-hour shift were compared to exposure standards and 90% of the respirable and 97% of the inhalable dust samples were found to be within the exposure standards. Median values appear to better describe exposures than the mean which is influenced by outliers. There was a declining trend in respirable dust results over time. This paper presents the findings of a study conducted in 2011/2012 that investigated the skills of new entrants to the mining industry’s skills in identifying workplace hazards from photographs of their work areas and strategies to improve these practices identified by health and safety managers. The findings of phase one of the study indicated that there was a greater ability to identify the hazards by those with 6–10 years experience and aged 34–45 years. Oriental rugs contaminated with Category 3 floodwater potentially harbor environmental bacteria known to be human pathogens. River water inoculated with three species of gram positive and gram negative environmental bacteria (Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) were used to assess the effectiveness of disinfectant type, cleaning methodology and drying practices by examining the survival rates of bacteria. Rug sections were immersed for one hour in contaminated water, saturated in one of three EPA registered disinfectant products (Phenol, Quaternary chloride, and Thyme oil) or tap water as a control, followed by cleaning and drying. Diffusion of innovation (DOI) is widely cited in the HIV behavior change literature; however there is a dearth of research on the application of DOI in interventions for sex workers. Following a randomized-controlled trial of HIV risk reduction among female entertainment workers (FEWs) in Shanghai, China, we used qualitative approaches to delineate potential interpersonal communication networks and contributing factors that promote diffusion of information in entertainment venues. Results showed that top-down communication networks from the venue owners to the FEWs were efficient for diffusion of information. The purpose of this project was to evaluate noise exposures of helicopter pilots,

nurses and paramedics at a hospital by collecting area and personal samples, determining noise levels inside the helmet, and evaluating the current selection of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Measurements gathered during personal sampling were statistically analyzed and calculated using OSHA 1910.95 App A to determine dose, reference duration and the Time-Weighted Average (TWA).
