Two work crews were installing metal decking for a roof by laying corrugated metal sheets to the joists of a retail building being constructed. All workers wore personal fall arrest systems complete with lanyards on the roof; none of the workers were tied off to the building. To prevent truck crashes due to substance use:

• Employers should implement and enforce a policy that prohibits commercial drivers who are ill or taking over-the-counter medications with potential side effects for impaired driving from operating a commercial vehicle.
• Employers should implement and enforce a “reasonable suspicion” drug testing policy if a driver is suspected to be under the influence of drugs.
• Companies should conduct comprehensive new-hire prescreening and after-hire random drug testing for substance abuse.
• A nationwide data- base containing a record of all commercial driver positive drug tests in the last two years should be developed.

On a Fall day in 2005 at 3:00 PM, a 46 year-old male semi-tractor trailer owner-operator was hauling logs when he rounded a curve, drove off the right side of a two lane state highway, struck a tree and rolled over. Emergency medical services were called to the scene. When they arrived, they found the driver without vital signs and contacted the local coroner. Kentucky State Police arrived and called Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement to the scene. The driver had not been wearing his seatbelt. Toxicology detected methamphetamine and doxylamine in his system at the time of the crash.

At an annual investment of $1B, it provides significant contributions to manufacturing, medicine, energy conservation, and the environment. Nanoparticles are structures with at least one dimension in the 1 to 100 nanometer (nm) range. DoD and US Air Force interest in aluminum nanoparticles (AL NPs) stems from its ability to enhance combustion jet fuel, thus increasing fuel efficiency. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui hubungan lama aktivitas fisik berat dengan Gejala Back pain pada penduduk usia kerja 18 – 55 tahun di wilayah Pulau Jawa dan Bali. Penelitian ini menggunakan data sekunder Survei Kesehatan Nasional Tahun 2001. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain potong-lintang dengan metode analisis regresi logistik ganda. Hasil penelitian mendapatkan ada hubungan antara aktivitas fisik berat dengan gejala back pain, setelah dikontrol oleh variabel-variabel confounding seperti lama aktivitas fisik duduk atau sedikit berjalan (terkait pekerjaan ataupun tidak), jenis kelamin, dan pendidikan. This paper describes the early stage of a project to upgrade a traditional college course on fire protection by incorporating learning materials to develop the higher-level cognitive ability known as synthesis. Students will be challenged to synthesize textbook information into fault tree diagrams. This study compared four formats for safety messages in printed manuals based on layouts found in a new standard of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z535.6, 2006). These four designs are specifically for use as section safety messages. Two used a signal word panel, and two used a safety alert symbol (exclamation in a triangle). The four formats were rated by 55 college students from three different classes using a five-point scale for hazardousness. All four messages were presented on the same page of a test booklet, with order balanced using a Latin Square. Results of a Friedman test …

Mental health and business professionals’ employment-related perceptions of 6 psychological disorders (i.e. alcoholism, insomnia, major depression, social phobia, post- traumatic stress disorder, obesity) were examined. The 33 professionals (n = 18 mental health; n = 15 business) evaluated each disorder on 18 employment-related dimensions (e.g. employability, productivity, trainability). Specifically, they evaluated the perceived likelihood of each of the 18 employment-related dimensions being associated with each of the 6 psychological disorders (1 = not likely; 5 = highly likely). Perceptions of the 33 mental health and business professionals were compared with the perceptions of college students (n = 106) obtained in …

Although qualitative methods, grounded theory included, cannot be reduced to formulaic procedures, research tools can clarify the process. The authors discuss two instruments supporting grounded theory analysis and interpretation using two examples from doctoral students. The conditional relationship guide contextualizes the central phenomenon and relates categories linking structure with process. The reflective coding matrix serves as a bridge to the final phase of grounded theory analysis, selective coding and interpretation, and, ultimately, to substantive theory generation.

Le but de cette activité étalée sur une période de 12 mois, était de fournir un logiciel disponible sur le site Web de l’IRSST permettant de calculer le temps de service de six cartouches filtrantes pour les vapeurs organiques pour des solvants réglementés au Québec. La mise au point de ce logiciel est le fruit d’une coopération entre l’IRSST, avec son expertise dans la caractérisation de la durée de vie des cartouches chimiques, et l’Institut de recherche sur l’hydrogène (IRH) via son expertise sur les charbons activés.

C’est au début des années 90 que la CSST a fait une première demande à l’IRSST pour étudier l’efficacité du port des ceintures de sécurité pour la conduite de chariots élévateurs. En 1998, René Benoît et Josée Duquette (Duquette et Benoît, 1998) déposaient un bilan exhaustif sur l’ensemble des dispositifs de sécurité utilisés sur les chariots élévateurs. Dans ce bilan, on reprochait principalement la non-représentativité des résultats de certaines études. De plus, Duquette et Benoît (Duquette et Benoît, 1998) ont noté, à plusieurs reprises, le caractère contradictoire entre les études effectuées sur les mêmes dispositifs de sécurité. Cette étude a comparé deux traitements sylvicoles, soit le débroussaillage conventionnel et le débroussaillage combiné au badigeonnage, avec le produit Myco-Tech^MC, des tiges coupées. En tout 10 débroussailleurs ayant entre 1 et 4 saisons d'expérience et formés à l'application du produit Myco-Tech^MC ont participé à cette étude. Un Step-Test a été administré à chaque sujet afin de permettre l'estimation de sa capacité cardiorespiratoire ainsi que du métabolisme de travail à partir de la fréquence cardiaque durant le travail. L’asthme professionnel est un asthme causé par l’exposition à des agents professionnels présents sur le lieu de travail. L’asthme professionnel représente environ 10% des cas d’asthme. Le seul traitement efficace de l’asthme professionnel est le retrait de l’exposition à l’agent en cause. Cependant, malgré le retrait de l’exposition, l’asthme persiste chez la grande majorité des patients. Il est donc important de déterminer l’évolution de cette maladie et d’essayer d’identifier des facteurs pouvant prédire son évolution.
