This research specifically evaluates the effect of height of the glove box arm ports on the efficiency of task performance and physiological costs of work for the glove box users.

Seven male and two female participants performed liquid mixing and vial filling tasks within a portable glove box. The two employees had been traveling westbound for approximately one hour when the driver noticed a cow in his lane. He swerved to avoid hitting the cow but hit it anyway. The tractor and two trailers jack-knifed, traveled through the median with the cab and trailers flipped onto their right sides, slid across the eastbound lanes, then the cab slammed through the guardrail. Purpose

To examine associations between the perceived smoking environment and smoking initiation among urban multi-ethnic adolescent girls in New York City.

Methods

Self-report surveys completed in grades 7, 8, and 9 assessed girls’ (n = 858) smoking initiation, and perceived smoking environment (family smoking, friends’ smoking, smoking norms, and cigarette availability). Carbon monoxide breath samples were collected from girls using a variation of the bogus pipeline procedure.

Results

Differences were found in smoking prevalence with white girls reporting the highest prevalence of smoking at baseline and the greatest increase in smoking prevalence from seventh to eighth grade. Black girls reported …

The Air Force Material Command (AFMC) hazardous waste training program was used to conduct this research. To measure the effectiveness of AFMC's hazardous waste training program, the research attempted to answer four research questions. On April 13, 2005, a 40-year-old male laborer was moving a 5-feet by 9-inch coil of slitted steel, weighing 6600 pounds, when it fell on him. The laborer was in the process of wrapping a chain through the middle of the coil and through a homemade device on the forks of a forklift when the coil tipped over. As the laborer tried to move away from the falling coil, it landed on his left side, breaking his left leg and causing internal injuries. With the large-scale mechanization inherent to the mining industry, noise-induced hearing loss remains a major concern. As part of on-going efforts to develop engineering controls to reduce noise levels in longwall mining, active noise control experiments were conducted above ground on a modified non-working stageloader. Recorded underground stageloader noise was broadcast into the above ground stageloader. The result was an average 7 dBA reduction when the active noise control was applied. These results suggest the possibility that active noise reduction can be a useful means to reduce stageloader noise if the control system can be made sufficiently rugged. The study …

Les entreprises qui utilisent des chariots élévateurs pour charger et décharger des camions aux quais de transbordement connaissent bien le principal danger associé à ce type d’activité, soit que le chariot tombe du quai si le camion s'en éloigne subitement. Cet éloignement peut être causé par plusieurs événements. Le départ inopiné du camion est l'exemple le plus souvent cité et se produit lorsque le camion quitte le quai avant la fin du transbordement. Les produits à base d’acrylates sont très utilisés dans plusieurs secteurs d’activité économique à cause de leur propriété adhésive. Par contre, leur utilisation peut causer une sensibilisation allergique dont les manifestations cutanées ont été décrites dès les années 40. Ces produits sont considérés, depuis une quinzaine d’années, comme responsables de rhinoconjonctivite et d’asthme professionnels. Certains cas ont déjà été diagnostiqués au Québec. Lors des interventions sur les lieux d’un incendie, les pompiers sont soumis à des astreintes physiques et physiologiques importantes (Baker et coll., 2000 ; Cloutier et Champoux, 2000 ; Ftaiti et coll., 2001 ; Griefahn et coll., 2003). Le travail des pompiers est souvent très exigeant pour le système cardiorespiratoire, car il implique des efforts physiques importants dans des conditions où la chaleur ambiante est très élevée. L’enquête, menée auprès d’un échantillon (11 000 travailleurs) représentatif de la population québécoise, a fourni un matériel inédit et intéressant sur ces différents aspects ainsi que sur les accidents du travail. Les informations traitées ne tiennent pas compte de la gravité des accidents du travail, seulement de leur fréquence.

L’amiantose et la silicose sont les pneumoconioses les plus fréquentes au Québec et sont souvent associées à une détérioration progressive de la fonction pulmonaire. Cependant, il est difficile de prédire qui, parmi les travailleurs, développera ces conditions ou, s’ils en sont atteints, quelle sera leur évolution clinique.

La problématique de l’exposition au monoxyde de carbone (CO) est une préoccupation constante pour les intervenants en santé et en sécurité du travail au Québec. Ce gaz incolore et inodore est une des causes d’exposition pouvant mener à une intoxication reliée au travail notamment des mécaniciens lors des travaux d’entretien de moteurs à combustion interne alimentée au propane de chariots élévateurs. Parmi les travaux d’entretien, l’ajustement des systèmes de carburation et d’allumage de ces véhicules peut entraîner une exposition sévère au CO des mécaniciens. Cette recherche propose l’investigation des effets d’une intervention en counseling sur la réadaptation de travailleurs accidentés à risque de chronicité. À la suite d’une recension de la littérature pertinente portant sur les facteurs biopsychosociaux et la chronicité, les enjeux de l’intervention en réadaptation sont analysés. Soixante-deux travailleurs accidentés à risque de chronicité sont assignés au hasard à 19 conseillers regroupés en deux catégories, soit formés ou non formés au counseling de réadaptation et intervenant selon deux modalités, soit sur une base hebdomadaire ou selon les pratiques habituelles de la Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CSST). …

Les isocyanates sont grandement utilisés dans la formulation de la peinture automobile afin de former des polymères de polyuréthanes. Lors d’une dégradation thermique, ces systèmes polymériques peuvent régénérer une partie des isocyanates qui sont des agents sensibilisants puissants conduisant à l’asthme professionnel. Dans les ateliers de réparation de carrosseries, l’utilisation d’un procédé abrasif sur des peintures de polyuréthanes peut générer suffisamment de chaleur pour occasionner la libération d’isocyanates dans l’air ambiant.

Notre étude porte sur le programme Principes de déplacement sécuritaire des bénéficiaires (PDSB) régulier, développé par l’Association pour la santé et la sécurité du travail du secteur affaires sociales (ASSTSAS). Le PDSB est une intervention complexe, composée du programme de formation PDSB, dispensé par un formateur accrédité par l’ASSTSAS au personnel soignant de son établissement, de formation d’agents de suivi PDSB, et d’activités de prévention menées par les formateurs dans leur centre hospitalier respectif. L’étude de Lavoie et Guertin (2002) sur les agents biologiques et les contraintes ergonomiques lors de l’utilisation de camions avec bras assisté a démontré que les principaux risques à la santé ou à la sécurité auxquels les éboueurs de la collecte conventionnelle sont traditionnellement exposés ont connu une forte diminution. Toutefois, l’existence de nouvelles problématiques associées à l’aménagement physique des camions et aux opérations d’entretien et de nettoyage a été aussi démontrée.
