The Acute Effects Of Heat Exposure On Cognitive Function, René Barbier
The Acute Effects Of Heat Exposure On Cognitive Function, René Barbier
Presentations - 2026
Passive heat exposure negatively impacts: •Executive function & response inhibition •Attention & processing speed •Workplace productivity
Older adults face heightened vulnerability to cognitive decline under heat stress (Schlader et al., 2015).
Who is most affected?
•Outdoor & industrial workers •Athletes training in summer heat •First responders (firefighters, EMTs) •Older adults with thermoregulatory decline
San Antonio context: persistent summers, growing population, occupational health implications.
Preventing The Strain: An Educational Program To Address Upper Extremity Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders In The Beauty Industry, Stacy Bello, Rebecca King
Preventing The Strain: An Educational Program To Address Upper Extremity Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders In The Beauty Industry, Stacy Bello, Rebecca King
Spring 2025 OTD Capstone Symposium
The program aims to enhance the safety and health of beauty professionals by addressing Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMSD). The educational program seeks to reduce injuries in the beauty industry by teaching ergonomic practices and joint protection strategies, which include the development of seminars targeted at cosmetology and esthetics students, as well as working professionals, with a strong emphasis on understanding body mechanics and ergonomic principles. Feedback from beauty professionals highlighted common WRMSD conditions and the critical need for preventative education and advocacy for care. The educational program strives to create a safer working environment that benefits beauty service providers throughout …
Effects Of The Covid-19 Crisis On Seafarers And Shipping, Raphael Baumler, María Carrera-Arce, Johan Hollander, Magnus Broström, Karolina Stark
Effects Of The Covid-19 Crisis On Seafarers And Shipping, Raphael Baumler, María Carrera-Arce, Johan Hollander, Magnus Broström, Karolina Stark
Reports
The report is a testament to the remarkable resilience of the ships and port interface, and the adaptability of port workers and seafarers during the COVID-19 crisis. It also brings to light the vulnerabilities and trends within the sector. The ability of these workers to manage the shockwave ensured that trade flow continued, sustaining the world. However, this period had severe impacts on their livelihoods, starkly highlighting the industry’s inadequate consideration of its human element and the rapid pace of digitalization. The research employed a unique combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches to explore and cross-validate information. This included an …
Violence Against Healthcare Workers: An Epidemic Within A Pandemic, Michaela Ramandanes
Violence Against Healthcare Workers: An Epidemic Within A Pandemic, Michaela Ramandanes
College of Health Sciences Posters
Violence and harassment towards healthcare workers has been an underlying problem throughout history. However, with the rapid and evolving onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the risks that healthcare workers face has been a focal topic of discussion among administration, staff and the public. What was once considered an occupational hazard is now being raised as a public health issue- an epidemic within a pandemic. This literature review seeks to identify the prevalence and causes of violence and harassment towards healthcare workers. Was healthcare violence as prevalent before COVID-19? Has violence increased because patient volume increased? Additionally, this review will determine …

The Impact Of Shift Work On Health And Wellbeing, Stephanie M. Gagelin
The Impact Of Shift Work On Health And Wellbeing, Stephanie M. Gagelin
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters
• Many of today’s industries require workers to perform shift work (typically during 1600-0700). If workers are awake during this time period, circadian misalignment occurs. This scholarly project uses research studies and meta- analyses to provide information about increased health risks associated with circadian misalignment, focusing on the categories of glucose metabolism, cardiovascular system, carcinogenesis, and mental health and acuity.
• Shift work has been found to increase BMI and waist circumference of employees, as well as increase blood glucose levels to “prediabetic” levels in previously euglycemic individuals.
• Shift work has been proven to increase high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), …
