BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) reduces mortality in esophageal variceal hemorrhage. Whether the COVID-19 pandemic worsened existing disparities in outcomes among patients undergoing TIPS remains unclear. We aimed to characterize racial, payer-based, and income-based disparities in post-TIPS outcomes before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS: Using the 2016-2022 National Inpatient Sample, we conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of 31,860 weighted hospitalizations of adults with cirrhosis and esophageal variceal hemorrhage who underwent TIPS. The American Society of Hematology (ASH) proposed the median time to first emergency department (ED) administration of pain medication for patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) vaso-occlusive pain episodes (VOE) as a site-level quality measure. Background: Electronic health records (EHR) have long held promise for sharing information efficiently, but this remains challenging. This quality improvement initiative sought to improve the accurate documentation of anthracycline and radiation therapy exposures in pediatric oncology patients who were treated at different institutions through a quality improvement methodology and EHR tools. Methods: A custom-built EHR smartform was previously created. Modifications were made to the smartform, and quality improvement methods were utilized to improve receipt of radiation summaries from other institutions and documentation of chemotherapeutic doses. OBJECTIVE: Few dementia caregivers have access to evidence-based support programs. Web applications (app) may address this gap. Plans4Care, a web app, provides caregivers with on-demand personalized solutions to address care challenges. We present results of a proof-of-concept study and describe a trial protocol to test efficacy.

METHODS: To use Plans4Care, caregivers respond to brief onboarding questions, assess dementia patients' cognitive function, identify care challenges, and generate "action plans" (personalized strategies). Simulation training is one avenue to making radiation oncology a high reliability health care intervention. Many patients experience unexpected harm while receiving healthcare, with a lasting impact on patients, families, and caregivers. Communication and Resolution Programs are being adopted with increased frequency, as a more systematic, transparent, and equitable approach to these unexpected outcomes. The aim of this study was to identify whether demographic factors played a role in identifying patients with unexpected death, as managed in our CRP. This nested case-controlled compared 236 patients who experienced an unanticipated death with 2,360 controls who died expectedly over a 10-year period. BACKGROUND: Health care chatbots are rapidly proliferating, while generative artificial intelligence (AI) outpaces existing evaluation standards.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop a structured, stakeholder-informed framework to standardize evaluation of health care chatbots.

METHODS: PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses)-guided searches across multiple databases identified 266 records; 152 were screened, 21 full texts were assessed, and 11 frameworks were included. Research on the relationship between integrative oncology (IO) programs and dispensing of chemotherapy agents and supportive care drugs, and hospitalization rates is limited. The present study examined these outcomes in chemotherapy-treated patients with cancer, comparing patients highly adherent to integrative care (high-AIC) to those with low adherence (low-AIC). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of clinical surveillance, primary radiotherapy, and primary surgery on overall survival (OS) in laryngeal carcinoma in situ (Cis).

METHODS: The 2006-2020 National Cancer Database was queried for adults with a biopsy-proven diagnosis of laryngeal Cis. Multivariable binary logistic and Cox proportional hazards regression models were implemented.

RESULTS: Of 3567 unique patients satisfying inclusion criteria, 514 (14.4%) underwent clinical surveillance, 1074 (30.1%) underwent primary radiotherapy, and 1979 (55.5%) underwent primary surgery. OBJECTIVES: To characterize practice patterns and outcomes in the management of low- and intermediate-grade salivary gland carcinoma prior to the existence of treatment guidelines.

METHODS: Analysis of a registry of patients who underwent parotid and submandibular gland resections for low-and intermediate-grade carcinomas between 2010 and 2019.

RESULTS: Of all 786 patients included in the study, 726 (92%) had preoperative imaging and 653 (83%) had preoperative biopsy. Present management summarized here is focused on early diagnosis, assiduous avoidance of injury and iatrogenic harm, symptomatic amelioration of painful flare-ups, and optimization of residual function. Twenty-one members of the International Clinical Council on FOP (ICC) and seven consultants from 15 countries, chosen for their clinical expertise in FOP, developed this summary statement. INTRODUCTION: Angioedema has potential for rapid airway decompensation requiring intervention. Patients are often admitted to an ICU for "airway watch." There is a lack of evidence to support which patients require this.

AIM: We aimed to characterize admission patterns and outcomes of angioedema patients at our institution to assess resource utilization and necessity of ICU use. We hypothesized that patients not requiring intubation upon presentation are safe to manage outside the ICU.

Atherosclerosis, a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States (US), is driven by complex factors, including the cumulative burden of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and other atherogenic lipids and lipoproteins. Lipid management in US primary care aims to prevent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events through screening and LDL-C lowering to risk-based goals. CONTEXT: Obesity is a recognized risk factor for adverse outcomes in cervical spine surgery. While cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) has emerged as an alternative to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), comparative outcomes among obese patients remain underexplored.
