Purpose: To develop and evaluate an automated whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) treatment planning pipeline with a deep learning-based auto-contouring and customizable landmark-based field aperture design.

Methods: The pipeline consisted of the following steps: (1) Auto-contour normal structures on computed tomography scans and digitally reconstructed radiographs using deep learning techniques, (2) locate the landmark structures using the beam's-eye-view, (3) generate field apertures based on eight different landmark rules addressing different clinical purposes and physician preferences. Two parallel approaches for generating field apertures were developed for quality control. The performance of the generated field shapes and dose distributions were compared with the original …

Aapm Btsc Report 377: Physicist Brachytherapy Training In 2021-A Survey Of Therapeutic Medical Physics Residency Program Directors, Manik Aima, Samantha J Simiele, Susan L Richardson, Christopher S Melhus Feb 2023

Aapm Btsc Report 377: Physicist Brachytherapy Training In 2021-A Survey Of Therapeutic Medical Physics Residency Program Directors, Manik Aima, Samantha J Simiele, Susan L Richardson, Christopher S Melhus

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Brachytherapy (BT) was the first radiotherapeutic technique used to treat human disease and remains an essential modality in radiation oncology. A decline in the utilization of BT as a treatment modality has been observed and reported, which may impact training opportunities for medical physics residents. A survey of therapeutic medical physics residency program directors was performed as part of an assessment of the current state of BT training during residency.

METHODS: In March 2021, a survey consisting of 23 questions was designed by a working unit of the Brachytherapy Subcommittee of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) …

Dual Beam-Current Transformer Design For Monitoring And Reporting Of Electron Ultra-High Dose Rate (Flash) Beam Parameters, Kevin Liu, Allison Palmiero, Nitish Chopra, Brett Velasquez, Ziyi Li, Sam Beddar, Emil Schüler Feb 2023

Dual Beam-Current Transformer Design For Monitoring And Reporting Of Electron Ultra-High Dose Rate (Flash) Beam Parameters, Kevin Liu, Allison Palmiero, Nitish Chopra, Brett Velasquez, Ziyi Li, Sam Beddar, Emil Schüler

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

PURPOSE: To investigate the usefulness and effectiveness of a dual beam-current transformer (BCTs) design to monitor and record the beam dosimetry output and energy of pulsed electron FLASH (eFLASH) beams in real-time, and to inform on the usefulness of this design for future eFLASH beam control.

METHODS: Two BCTs are integrated into the head of a FLASH Mobetron system, one located after the primary scattering foil and the other downstream of the secondary scattering foil. The response of the BCTs was evaluated individually to monitor beam output as a function of dose, scattering conditions, and ability to capture physical beam …

4d Lung Mri With High-Isotropic-Resolution Using Half-Spoke (Ute) And Full-Spoke 3d Radial Acquisition And Temporal Compressed Sensing Reconstruction, Can Wu, Guruprasad Krishnamoorthy, Victoria Yu, Ergys Subashi, Andreas Rimner, Ricardo Otazo Jan 2023

4d Lung Mri With High-Isotropic-Resolution Using Half-Spoke (Ute) And Full-Spoke 3d Radial Acquisition And Temporal Compressed Sensing Reconstruction, Can Wu, Guruprasad Krishnamoorthy, Victoria Yu, Ergys Subashi, Andreas Rimner, Ricardo Otazo

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Objective:

To develop a respiratory motion-resolved 4D MRI technique with high-isotropic-resolution (1.1 mm) using 3D radial sampling, camera-based respiratory motion sensing, and temporal compressed sensing reconstruction for lung cancer imaging.

Approach:

Free-breathing half- and full-spoke 3D golden-angle radial acquisitions were performed on eight healthy volunteers and eight patients with lung tumors of varying size. A back-and-forth k-space ordering between consecutive interleaves of the 3D radial acquisition was performed to minimize eddy current-related artifacts. Data were sorted into respiratory motion states using camera-based motion navigation and 4D images were reconstructed using temporal compressed sensing to reduce scan time. Normalized sharpness indices …

Development Of A Qa Plan For A 3.0t Cannon Galan Mr-Sim, Nathaniel D. Teague Jan 2023

Development Of A Qa Plan For A 3.0t Cannon Galan Mr-Sim, Nathaniel D. Teague

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: To develop and incorporate a QA (quality assurance) program for a Canon Galan 3 tesla MR Simulator for applications in radiation therapy.

Methods and materials: The QA program was centered around tests performed with three separate levels of frequency. The daily QA procedure consisted of scanning a vendor provided daily QA cube phantom that measures basic performance parameters. Additionally, a series of basic safety check were performed. The monthly QA procedure consisted of several tests, including scanning the ACR MRI large accreditation phantom and manually performing its corresponding image quality tests. Scanning the MagPhan RT for its detailed geometric …

View-Sharing For 4d Magnetic Resonance Imaging With Randomized Projection-Encoding Enables Improvements Of Respiratory Motion Imaging For Treatment Planning In Abdominothoracic Radiotherapy, Ergys Subashi, Li Feng, Yilin Liu, Scott Robertson, Paul Segars, Bastiaan Driehuys, Christopher R Kelsey, Fang-Fang Yin, Ricardo Otazo, Jing Cai Jan 2023

View-Sharing For 4d Magnetic Resonance Imaging With Randomized Projection-Encoding Enables Improvements Of Respiratory Motion Imaging For Treatment Planning In Abdominothoracic Radiotherapy, Ergys Subashi, Li Feng, Yilin Liu, Scott Robertson, Paul Segars, Bastiaan Driehuys, Christopher R Kelsey, Fang-Fang Yin, Ricardo Otazo, Jing Cai

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The accuracy and precision of radiation therapy are dependent on the characterization of organ-at-risk and target motion. This work aims to demonstrate a 4D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method for improving spatial and temporal resolution in respiratory motion imaging for treatment planning in abdominothoracic radiotherapy.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The spatial and temporal resolution of phase-resolved respiratory imaging is improved by considering a novel sampling function based on quasi-random projection-encoding and peripheral k-space view-sharing. The respiratory signal is determined directly from k-space, obviating the need for an external surrogate marker. The average breathing curve is used to optimize …

BACKGROUND: Successful generation of biomechanical-model-based deformable image registration (BM-DIR) relies on user-defined parameters that dictate surface mesh quality. The trial-and-error process to determine the optimal parameters can be labor-intensive and hinder DIR efficiency and clinical workflow.

PURPOSE: To identify optimal parameters in surface mesh generation as boundary conditions for a BM-DIR in longitudinal liver and lung CT images to facilitate streamlined image registration processes.

METHODS: Contrast-enhanced CT images of 29 colorectal liver cancer patients and end-exhale four-dimensional CT images of 26 locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients were collected. Different combinations of parameters that determine the triangle mesh quality …
