Clinical outpatient strategies to accurately predict diabetes-related iatrogenic severe hypoglycemia (SH) are lacking. To redress this gap, we conducted the first-ever prognosis investigation of guideline-defined (Level 3) SH in the United States (US) (iNPHORM).
Chapter 4 details the design and implementation of iNPHORM: a prospective 12-wave panel survey (2020–2021). N=1206 adults with type 1 or insulin- and/or secretagogue-treated type 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM or T2DM) were recruited from a US-wide, probability-based internet panel. For one-year, we collected monthly data on SH occurrence (frequencies, detection methods, symptoms, causes, and treatments) and related factors (anthropometric, sociodemographic, clinical, environmental/situational, behavioural, and psychosocial).

Development Of A Predictive Model For Frailty Utilizing Electronic Health Records, Kye Poronsky
Development Of A Predictive Model For Frailty Utilizing Electronic Health Records, Kye Poronsky
Masters Theses
Frailty is a multifaceted, geriatric syndrome that is associated with age-related declines in functional reserves resulting in increased risks of in-hospital death, readmissions and discharge to nursing homes. The risks associated with frailty highlights the need for providers to be able to quickly, and accurately, assess someone’s frailty level. Previous studies have shown that bedside clinician assessment is not a reliable or valid way to determine frailty, meaning that a more reliable, valid and concise method is needed. We developed a prediction model using discharge ICD-9/ICD-10 diagnostic codes and other demographic variables to predict Reported Edmonton Frail Scale scores. Participants …
Elucidating Mechanisms Influencing Maternal Postpartum Health: The Protective Benefits Of Breastfeeding And Associations With Allostatic Load, Experiences Of Stress, And Resiliency, Bi-Sek J. Hsiao
Doctoral Dissertations
Research has established breastfeeding as protective of maternal health, but little is known about the ways breastfeeding interacts with chronic stress pathways and interfaces with stressors such as discrimination and neighborhood deprivation, which are salient in the experiences of many marginalized communities. This research addresses these knowledge gaps through secondary analyses of prospective cohort data generated by the Community Child Health Research Network through Community Based Participatory Research processes. Analytical samples were derived from 2510 postpartum women from five regions in the U.S. who self-identified as Black, Hispanic, or White. Study 1 investigated and found an inverse association between breastfeeding …

“Pandemias Políticas: The Effects Of Political And Social Instability On Infectious Disease Epidemiology In Latin America"”, Sarah H. Noonan
Senior Theses
This paper seeks to analyze the relationship between political and social unrest and conflict and infectious disease epidemiology in Latin America. An analysis of published literature regarding epidemiological, biomedical, political, and historical content was conducted to highlight potential connections between infectious disease epidemics and sociopolitical conflict in the region. Specific analyses of Smallpox, Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis, Chagas disease, Cholera, Dengue, and COVID-19 were conducted, in an effort to uncover potential causations and context of epidemics of these conditions. Results of this analysis depict a necessity for further research into public health and disease control mechanisms during times of conflict and …
Elucidation Of Novel And Established Campylobacter Species With Clinical And Agricultural Significance Through Phenotypic, Genotypic, And Taxonomic Investigation, Caoimhe Lynch
Theses
Campylobacter spp. are well-established human, veterinary and economic pathogens, with a broad host range spanning from terrestrial and marine mammalian, avian and reptilian hosts. The scope of the study includes novel and notorious species within the genus, with reference to zoonotic agents Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli - the leading cause of human bacterial gastroenteritis in the EU and Ireland, Campylobacter fetus that represents the most common campylobacter causing bacteraemia and two novel species isolated from pigs not described in the literature previously. C. jejuni and C. coli isolates (n = 350) recovered from broiler caecal and neck skin samples, …
