Development Of Water-Soluble Nanofibrous Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Collectors For Bioaerosol Sampling And Environmental Surface Microbial Detection, Kevin Crown
Theses & Dissertations
Environmental surveillance for pathogenic microorganisms requires sampling technologies capable of efficiently collecting biological particles from air and surfaces for downstream detection. Current environmental sampling materials, such as fibrous aerosol filters and surface sampling swabs, are designed to capture particles effectively but often retain a portion of the collected material during extraction. Incomplete recovery reduces the sensitivity of microbiological and molecular detection, particularly in situations where microbiological concentrations are low, such as in environmental monitoring and clearance sampling following biological contamination events. This dissertation describes the development and evaluation of water-soluble nanofibrous sampling materials designed to improve microbial recovery while maintaining …

Association Between Agrichemical Mixtures And Pediatric Health Outcomes: Evidence From A Nebraska Population-Based Surveillance, Jabeen Taiba
Theses & Dissertations
Human exposure to environmental contaminants is associated with various pediatric health outcomes. Agrichemicals are a significant environmental risk factor for childhood cancers and congenital anomalies, and reduced exposure could improve pediatric health outcomes. Previous studies in Nebraska have explored the association between single pollutants and pediatric cancers and birth defects. However, it is important to estimate the overall effect of the agrichemical mixture on these pediatric health outcomes. In addition to environmental risk factors, several social vulnerability factors also contribute to increased agrichemical exposure and show disparities in pediatric cancers and birth defects. The objectives of this dissertation are to …
A Community-Based Participatory Research Approach To Addressing Pediatric Asthma Disparities In Douglas County, Nebraska, Aislinn Rookwood
A Community-Based Participatory Research Approach To Addressing Pediatric Asthma Disparities In Douglas County, Nebraska, Aislinn Rookwood
Theses & Dissertations
Pediatric asthma is the leading chronic disease among children in the United States, and the incidence of pediatric asthma is increasing every year. Nebraska has an asthma prevalence comparable to the United States average; however, the state has significant disparities by county, race, and geographic location, with prevalence rates much higher than the national average. Douglas County is a hot spot for increased pediatric asthma rates, with further differences in rates by race and geographic location within the county. The University of Nebraska Medical Center, in partnership with Healthy Housing Omaha and the Nebraska Asthma Coalition, collaborated to conduct this …
Environmental Exposures And Human Health Challenges: Evidence-Based Insights From Health Surveillance Systems, Jagadeesh Puvvula
Environmental Exposures And Human Health Challenges: Evidence-Based Insights From Health Surveillance Systems, Jagadeesh Puvvula
Theses & Dissertations
Human exposure to environmental hazards is associated with a variety of preventable adverse health outcomes. As the environmental health risks result from the complex interaction between hazard, exposure, and susceptibility, these exposure-outcome associations are heterogeneous across the population. Improving environmental health literacy by advocating evidence-based environmental risk communication could play a role in reinforcing protective behavior against environmental hazards. The use of public health surveillance systems to assess the exposure-response associations is one of the effective ways to quantify the environmental health risks. However, there are several gaps in effectively quantifying environmental health risks. This dissertation aims to address a …
A Systematic Literature Review Of The Prevalence, Distribution, Exposure, And Human Health Risks Of Tire Microplastics And The Contribution Of Their Physicochemically Diverse Properties, Luke Glastad
Theses & Dissertations
The history of synthetic plastics dates back to their first uses in 1907, continues with their expansion through the middle of the century with a diverse array of new polymers, and are so omnipresent today that many label this age of Earth the Plasticene Era. Tire microplastics (TMPs) have been increasingly identified as one of the environment's most bountiful types of microplastics (MPs). TMPs mainly enter the environment as tire-wear particles (TWPs) and recycled tire crumb (RTC). TWPs, in particular, have a high degree of variability, which impacts their distribution, degradation, and risk for adverse human health effects. This review …

Characterization Of Aerosols Produced By Common Orthodontic Procedures, Anna R. Schoettger
Characterization Of Aerosols Produced By Common Orthodontic Procedures, Anna R. Schoettger
Theses & Dissertations
Introduction: Aerosols can harbor active viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, making it vital that clinical protocols implemented in the orthodontic office be based on which procedures produce aerosols. Research shows that various procedures in the field of orthodontics generate aerosols, however, there is a lack of consensus as to which procedures should be deemed aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs). The current study aimed to better understand aerosol production of various orthodontic procedures. Methods: Orthodontic procedures were performed in a closed-room dental operatory on acrylic teeth mounted onto a dental manikin. Procedures performed included: debonding, bonding, and repositioning of one bracket. Variations introduced included: high-speed …
Investigation Of Environmental Lead Exposures In Children At A Midwestern City With Superfund Site, Zijian Qin
Investigation Of Environmental Lead Exposures In Children At A Midwestern City With Superfund Site, Zijian Qin
Theses & Dissertations
Childhood exposure to lead is known to cause a host of adverse health effects in children, with no safe blood lead level indicated. Environmental lead contamination is prevalent throughout the United States and remains a threat to the healthy development of children living in these areas, including children in Omaha, Nebraska. The overall objectives of this dissertation were to characterize potential sources of lead in the community – where children play and where children live through the use of environmental exposure sampling. This dissertation also provides insight into current Nebraska children's blood lead levels and identifies local populational attributes that …
An Assessment Of Preparations Made In The United States For Highly Hazardous Communicable Diseases Following The 2014-2016 Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic, Jocelyn J. Herstein
An Assessment Of Preparations Made In The United States For Highly Hazardous Communicable Diseases Following The 2014-2016 Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic, Jocelyn J. Herstein
Theses & Dissertations
The 2014-2016 Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic in West Africa was unprecedented in magnitude and scope. The threat of imported cases of EVD in the United States prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to establish a tiered network of hospitals to enhance domestic isolation capacity, including the designation of select hospitals as Ebola treatment centers (ETCs). As of spring 2015, no information existed on the capacity, physical infrastructure, staffing models, or infection control protocols of these newly-established ETCs, nor was there information on other highly hazardous communicable diseases (HHCDs) these units would admit. Moreover, no documentation was …

Egypt has a lower incidence of uterine cancer than other countries in the Middle East. In addition to the international incidence variation, there are also wide variations in incidence by rural and urban areas within countries. Therefore, this research project focused on the Gharbiah province, north of Cairo in the Nile Delta, with the aims of investigating demographic and clinical characteristics of uterine cancer, assessing rural/urban variation in incidence rates, and evaluating the possible role of hysterectomy in under-estimating the disease incidence …
Epigenetic Modifications Of Human Placenta Associated With Preterm Birth, Drissa Toure
Epigenetic Modifications Of Human Placenta Associated With Preterm Birth, Drissa Toure
Theses & Dissertations
Preterm birth is a complex multifactorial process. Despite the well-known role of the placenta in supporting the fetal development and maternal-fetal tolerance, the placental epigenetic modifications and preterm birth (PTB) remains poorly understood and under investigated. Various maternal and environment factors can influence epigenetic programming during fetal development to affect the functioning and structures of organs, including the placenta, which can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes, including PTB. The understanding of the placental epigenetic alterations and maternal determinants associated with PTB are apparently indispensable for the development of actual diagnosis and methods of prevention and treatment of premature labor. The …
