Subclinical myocardial disease refers to pathological cardiac changes that precede overt symptoms. It represents an emerging frontier in cardiovascular disease prevention; wherein early detection of myocardial dysfunction could allow timely intervention to avert heart failure (HF) and other outcomes. This narrative review summarizes the current and emerging tools for detecting subclinical myocardial disease, including advanced cardiac imaging and circulating biomarkers, and discusses their potential to improve risk stratification and preventive care in asymptomatic high-risk individuals. Objective

To explore the relationship between low birthweight (LBW) and food insecurity across US counties and determine whether this relationship differs between Black and White women.

Methods

LBW data was derived from the 2013–2019 National Center for Health Statistics and National Vital Statistics System Birth Files. Food insecurity data was derived from Feeding America’s 2013–2019 Map the Meal Gap project. Analyses included descriptive statistics and regression models.

Results

Data were available for 3037 US counties. Food insecurity significantly predicted county-level LBW (t(3035) = 44.48, P <  .001) and explained 39.46% of the variance in LBW (F(13,035) = 1978.03, P <  .001, R = .63). Food insecurity predicted LBW for …

This dissertation explores how mathematical and statistical modeling can inform vaccination strategies and evaluate the impact of interventions during infectious disease outbreaks. Motivated by the challenges observed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the research integrates compartmental modeling, Bayesian inference, and agent-based simulation to assess policy effectiveness and disease control across varying contexts. The first study develops a SEIRDV model that incorporates government interventions and vaccination rollout to examine COVID-19 dynamics in Qatar. A Bayesian approach is used to estimate parameters and compute time-varying transmission rates. Introduction: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) disproportionately affects U.S. Hispanic populations. This dissertation examined whether structural determinants fundamentally drive T2D disparities among Hispanics, with attention to within-group racial heterogeneity.

Methods: Three studies utilized nationally representative data. Study 1 examined neighborhood segregation and ethnic enclave residence associations with T2D using restricted NHANES data (2011-2018, n=5,056). Study 2 investigated acculturation and T2D associations using restricted NHANES data (2011-2018, n=4,540). Study 3 analyzed patient-provider racial/ethnic concordance and adequate diabetes care using MEPS data (2008-2021, n=17,138).

Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is an insidious diagnosis associated with morbidity and mortality. Pharmacologic therapy may suffice initially, but advanced stages demand mechanical intervention. Pulmonary stent implantation (PSI) and pulmonary balloon angioplasty (PBA) are common strategies, both carrying restenosis risks. This meta‐analysis compares PSI and PBA to determine the superior revascularization strategy. We systematically searched databases until November 2023, identifying 11 studies with 780 patients. Studies, including those involving patients undergoing balloon angioplasty (BA) or stent angioplasty (SA) for PVS, were selected. Case reports, editorials, and cross‐sectional studies were omitted. Objectives: Nutrition in early childhood is critical to long-term health outcomes and parents play a key role in shaping children’s eating habits. This study examined where U.S. parents of children aged 2–5 obtain nutrition information, source credibility, and how parental nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) relate to children’s dietary intake.

Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was completed by 126 parents, recruited via social media and community networks using convenience sampling. This hermeneutic phenomenological study explores the leadership experiences of Black birth workers (BBWs), revealing critical insights into leadership dynamics within maternal healthcare. Through a theoretical framework integrating African feminism, Black feminism, and anti-racist feminism, the research examines how BBWs conceptualize and enact leadership through embodied, relational, and liberatory approaches. This study addresses a significant gap in leadership literature, particularly regarding generational knowledge and practices of BBWs, which remain understudied despite their vital role in Black maternal healthcare. This study explored the relationship between perceived stigma and healthcare avoidance among men and evaluated the relationship between self-reported body mass index (BMI) and avoidance of healthcare appointments due to weight-related stigma and other reasons. This study found no significant relationship between BMI and avoidance of preventive medical appointments due to perceived stigma. Estimating the transmission fitness of SARS-CoV-2 variants and understanding their evolutionary fitness trends are important for epidemiological forecasting. Existing methods are often constrained by their parametric natures and do not satisfactorily align with the observations during COVID-19. Here, we introduce a sliding-window data-driven pairwise comparison method, the differential population growth rate (DPGR) that uses viral strains as internal controls to mitigate sampling biases. DPGR is applicable in time windows in which the logarithmic ratio of two variant subpopulations is approximately linear. Motivation: Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are fundamental aspects in understanding biological processes. Accurately predicting the effects of mutations on PPIs remains a critical requirement for drug design and disease mechanistic studies. Recently, deep learning models using protein 3D structures have become predominant for predicting mutation effects. However, significant challenges remain in practical applications, in part due to the considerable disparity in generalization capabilities between easy and hard mutations. Specifically, a hard mutation is defined as one with its maximum TM-score < 0.6 when compared to the training set. Additionally, compared to physics-based approaches, deep learning models may overestimate performance due to potential data leakage.

Background: Neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (nMAbs) have been used to treat COVID-19 and are increasingly being used to treat other infections. However, there is concern that by neutralizing the SARS-CoV-2 virus, nMAbs may decrease the availability of antigens to the immune system, potentially impairing the endogenous polyclonal immune response and decreasing long-term immune protection.

Methods: We compared 28 and 90-day anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike protein neutralization activity and anti-SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid response for patients hospitalized with COVID-19 infection randomized to receive nMAbs or placebo in the large platform ACTIV-3/TICO trials. We have previously shown that mice with a loss of C-type lectin-like type II (CLEC2), which have lymphatic dysfunction due to the role of CLEC2 in platelets for maintaining separation between the venous and lymphatic system, develop lung tertiary lymphoid organ (TLO) formation and lung injury that resembles an emphysema phenotype of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We now sought to investigate whether and how TLOs in these mice may play a pathogenic role in lung injury that is relevant to human disease. We introduce the Stigma-to-Structure Advocacy Framework, a novel, evidence-based model designed to transform narcolepsy advocacy by systematically bridging patient narratives with structural change. Narcolepsy remains a profoundly underdiagnosed and misunderstood neurological disorder, with persistent diagnostic delays and pervasive cultural stigma undermining patient well-being and access to care. Despite recent progress in awareness and support, advocacy efforts remain fragmented and insufficiently integrated with health policy, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This perspective advances a strategic evolution of narcolepsy advocacy through the Stigma-to-Structure Advocacy Framework, which is anchored in three pillars: narrative-driven awareness, clinical system integration, and policy activation.
