Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in solid organ transplant (SOT) patients is associated with more severe outcomes than non-immunosuppressed hosts. The risk factors for developing the long COVID in acute COVID remain unknown, and the survival outcomes of long COVID in SOT patients remain understudied.

Methods: We developed several retrospective cohorts. This project included all patients identified with acute COVID in the National COVID Collaborative Cohort Registry from July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2022.

Objectives: West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that is naturally sustained in a Culex mosquito-bird-mosquito transmission cycle and can cause disease in birds, equines, and humans. Most human infections with WNV are asymptomatic; however, West Nile fever (WNF), or West Nile neuroinvasive disease (WNND) can develop and be fatal in some circumstances. Between 2005 and 2021 there have been over 1,800 cumulative cases of WNV in Nebraska, which currently ranks as fourth in the United States for reported cases. Burnout has been found to problematically overlap with depression. However, the generalizability of this finding remains disputed. This study examined burnout–depression overlap using the recently developed Occupational Depression Inventory (ODI) and two burnout measures, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI). The study involved two teacher samples employed in France (N = 1,450) and New Zealand (N = 492). We found the correlations of the ODI with (a) the MBI’s emotional exhaustion (EE) subscale and (b) the CBI to reach .80. BACKGROUND: Patients with premenopausal breast cancer (PMBC) have been historically excluded from some clinical trials because of the limitations of using endocrine therapy (ET) in this population. We analyzed breast cancer randomized clinical trials (RCTs) to determine the rates of and factors associated with inclusion of PMBC patients to provide a benchmark for PMBC inclusion in RCTs moving forward.

METHODS: Using ClinicalTrials.Gov, we identified breast cancer phase III RCTs and extracted inclusion criteria and patient enrollment information. Multiple binary logistic regression modeling was used to assess trial-related factors that were associated with PMBC patient inclusion.

OBJECTIVE: Delayed-interval delivery (DID) is the delivery of the first fetus in a multiple gestation pregnancy without prompt delivery of the remaining fetus(es). We aimed to assess infant outcomes of DID.

STUDY DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohort study of infants born 22-28 weeks' gestation or weighing 401-1500 g. DID was defined as a passage of >24 h between the birth of firstborn and retained infants. Rates of mortality, morbidity, and developmental outcomes were compared within DID multiples, to other multiples not born by DID, and all infants in the Generic Database and follow-up datasets (excluding DID-born).

Healthcare providers who use controlling or coercive strategies may compel short-term enactment of HIV and sexually transmitted infection prevention behaviors but may inadvertently undermine their client's motivation to maintain those behaviors in the absence of external pressure. Autonomous motivation refers to the self-emanating and self-determined drive for engaging in health behaviors. It is associated with long-term maintenance of health behaviors. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A few case reports of autoimmune hepatitis-like liver injury have been reported after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination. We evaluated clinical features, treatment response and outcomes of liver injury following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in a large case series.

APPROACH AND RESULTS: We collected data from cases in 18 countries. The type of liver injury was assessed with the R-value. The study population was categorized according to features of immune-mediated hepatitis (positive autoantibodies and elevated immunoglobulin G levels) and corticosteroid therapy for the liver injury. BACKGROUND: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) can lead to the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In some patients with non-resolvable (NR) COVID-19, lung injury can progress rapidly to the point that lung transplantation is the only viable option for survival. This fatal progression of lung injury involves a rapid fibroproliferative response and takes on average 15 weeks from initial symptom presentation. Little is known about the mechanisms that lead to this fulminant lung fibrosis (FLF) in NR-COVID-19.

Purpose: To investigate the accuracy and biases of predicted lung shunt fraction (LSF) and lung dose (LD) calculations via 99m Tc-macro-aggregated albumin (99m Tc-MAA) planar imaging for treatment planning of 90 Y-microsphere radioembolization.

Methods and materials: LSFs in 52 planning and LDs in 44 treatment procedures were retrospectively calculated, in consecutive radioembolization patients over a 2 year interval, using 99m Tc-MAA planar and SPECT/CT imaging. PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this study is to identify if there is an underlying genetic predisposition for COVID-related macroglossia and if this susceptibility is higher among individuals of African heritage. Secondary objectives include determining if genetic testing of COVID-infected patients who are intubated and prone could identify patients with higher susceptibility to the development of macroglossia.

METHODS: A retrospective chart review was completed for each patient, and prospectively, genetic and histopathologic analyses were completed. Whole-exome sequencing was completed on two patients; immunohistochemistry was completed on the COVID-positive tissue samples.

Co-infection with HIV/HPV and bio-behavioral risk factors (e.g., immunodeficiency, un-protected sex) increase likelihood for developing anal and other HPV-associated cancers among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). We explored knowledge, attitudes, and health communication regarding HPV-associated anal cancers among HIV/AIDS service organization (ASO) employees/volunteers delivering non-clinical services to PLWHA. Participants (n=59) were recruited from six ASOs located in the South United States Census region and completed a 118-item self-administered survey. INTRODUCTION: Fewer cancer diagnoses have been made during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pandemic-related delays in cancer diagnosis could occur from limited access to care or patient evaluation delays (e.g., delayed testing after abnormal results). Follow-up of abnormal test results warranting evaluation for cancer was examined before and during the pandemic.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is increasing in incidence and is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Adherence to HCC surveillance guidelines and appropriate treatment triage of liver lesions may improve receipt of curative-intent treatment and improved survival. Late-stage HCC diagnosis reflects sub-optimal implementation of effective HCC surveillance, whereas inappropriate treatment triage or linkage to care accounts for the non-receipt of curative-intent in close to half of early-stage HCC in the USA. Autologous T cells genetically modified with a CD19 chimeric antigen receptor are an effective therapy for children and adults with relapsed or refractory acute lymphoblastic leukemia with initial response rates ranging from 70 to 85%. Unfortunately, about half of these responding patients will subsequently relapse raising the question of whether allogeneic hemopoietic stem cell transplant should be considered as a consolidative therapy. Currently efforts are focused on defining risk factors for relapse to try and develop algorithms predicting which patients may benefit from allogenic transplant.

Purpose of review: Multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) are prevalent in transplant recipients and associated with poor outcomes. We review recent cases of phage therapy used to treat recalcitrant infections in transplant recipients and explore the future role of such therapy in this setting.

Recent findings: Individual case reports and small case series suggest possible efficacy of phage therapy for the treatment of MDRO infections in pre and posttransplant patients. Importantly, there have been no serious safety concerns in the reported cases that we reviewed. There are no applicable randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to better guide phage therapy at this time.

Immunomodulation and immunity from vaccination and natural infection have reduced mortality from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, there are ongoing concerns regarding emerging variants and residual pulmonary sequelae in survivors, given that the lungs are the principal site for the triumvirate of infection, inflammation and injury. The initial waves of acute, severe COVID-19 were profoundly inflammatory, usually manifest as organising pneumonia ± acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Objective: The association between chronic kidney disease and adverse outcomes after coronary artery bypass grafting is well established; in contrast, the association between chronic kidney disease and readmission has been less thoroughly investigated. We hypothesized that patients at higher chronic kidney disease stages have greater risk of readmission, poorer operative outcomes, and greater hospitalization cost.

Methods: Using the 2016-2018 Nationwide Readmissions Database, we identified 519,387 patients who underwent isolated coronary artery bypass grafting. Stellate Ganglion Block For Long Covid Symptom Management: A Case Report, Mashfee H Khan, Kennedy P Kirkpatrick, Yi Deng, Krishna B Shah

Stellate ganglion block (SGB) is gaining increasing acceptance as a treatment modality for various medical conditions. It works by blocking neuronal transmissions which in turn alleviates sympathetically-driven disease processes. Many of the prolonged sequelae of long COVID are thought to be mediated by dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system, and SGB is being investigated as a potential option for symptomatic management of long COVID. This case report demonstrates the efficacy of SGB in a previously healthy patient for the management of long COVID symptoms including fatigue, post-exertional malaise, shortness of breath, and gastrointestinal symptoms.
