This study examined the association between exposure to coal ash in the home among children aged 6-14 and asthma. Data was collected using personal modular impactors, lift tape samples, toe/finger nail samples, questionnaires, and peak flow meters. Laboratory methods used to analyze the samples included gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) / energy dispersive x-ray (EDX), and proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE). Statistical methods used to analyze the data included the Chi Square Test of Independence, logistic regression, the Hosmer-Lemeshow Goodness of Fit test, Fisher’s Exact Test, and the Anderson-Darling Normality Test. The objective was to assess whether the food environment at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) campuses supports healthy eating behaviors using components of the Healthy Campus Environmental Audit (vending, dining, and convenience store audits). Secondary aims were to compare the UNL food environment to other college campuses and explore whether there are existing health promotion and obesity prevention initiatives, programs, pledges and/or policies at UNL.

The theoretical and empirical links between public health insurance access and fertility in the United States remain unclear. Utilizing a demographic cell-based estimation approach with panel data (1987-1997), we revisit the large-scale Medicaid expansions to pregnant women during the 1980s to estimate the heterogeneous impacts of public health insurance access on childbirth. While the decision to become a parent (i.e., the extensive margin) appears to be unaffected by increased access to Medicaid, we find that increased access to public health insurance positively influenced the number of high parity births (i.e., the intensive margin) for select groups of women. Background: School attendance rates in sub-Saharan Africa are among the lowest worldwide, placing children at heightened risk for poor educational and economic outcomes. One understudied risk factor for missed schooling is household water insecurity, which is linked to depression among women and may increase children’s water-fetching burden at the expense of educational activities, particularly among children of depressed caregivers. Hymenolepis nana, the dwarf tapeworm, is a common intestinal infection of children worldwide. We evaluated infection and risk factor data that were previously collected from 14,761 children aged 2-15 years during a large-scale program in northern Peru. We found that 1,124 of 14,761 children (7.61%) had H. nana infection, a likely underestimate given that only a single stool sample was examined by microscopy for diagnosis. The strongest association with infection was lack of adequate water (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] 2.22, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.82-2.48) and sanitation infrastructure in the house (aPR 1.94, 95% CI 1.64-2.29). People with substance use disorders (SUD) have high rates of hospitalization and readmission, long lengths of stay, and skyrocketing healthcare costs. Yet, models for improving care are extremely limited. We performed a needs assessment and then convened academic and community partners, including a hospital, community SUD organizations, and Medicaid accountable care organizations, to design a care model for medically complex hospitalized patients with SUD. Needs assessment showed that 58% to 67% of participants who reported active substance use said they were interested in cutting back or quitting. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of dental magnification loupes on posture during instrumentation.

Methods: A convenience sample of 27 right-handed dental hygienists, with no prior history of injuries or disabilities of the head, neck, or trunk region, enrolled in the study. Baseline posture calibration was taken and tri-axial accelerometers were placed on four locations of the head and trunk (occipital region of head; cervical vertebrae C5; thoracic vertebrae T5; lumbar vertebrae L1) to measure acceleration and the orientation of the body to gravity. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the essence of the experience of individuals who were denied Social Security Disability benefits and who sought the appeals process. In the first round, five semi-structured face-to-face interviews allow the participants to share their thoughts, feelings, and actions taken and, if any, what life changes occurred during the appeals process. Data analysis using phenomenological methods create textural-structural descriptions from which, in a second interview, applicants choose to confirm, edit, or add to their analyzed interviews. Previous research finds that (1) lesbian and bisexual (LB) women as well as gay and bisexual (GB) men have higher rates of rape victimization compared to their heterosexual (H) peers and (2) perceived familial support reduces the impact of some of rape’s negative health outcomes in heterosexual victims. Objectives: The objective of this study was to describe the features of health informatics blogs on the Internet.

Methods: A search was conducted in August, 2016 using the search engine, Google, and key words: ‘mobile health blog,’ ‘telehealth/telemedicine blog,’ ‘Electronic Health Record blog,’ ‘personalized health record blog,’ ‘population health decision support system blog,’ and ‘public/population health dashboard blog.’ The first 24 blogs resulting from each key word search were recorded, generating 144 blogs. A total of 109 unique blogs resulted after removing duplicates and non-functional sites.

Background: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) prevent invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia. However, some low-and middle-income countries have yet to introduce PCV into their immunization programs due, in part, to lack of certainty about the potential impact. Assessing PCV benefits is challenging because specific data on pneumococcal disease are often lacking, and it can be difficult to separate the effects of factors other than the vaccine that could also affect pneumococcal disease rates.

TB dapat meningkatkan progresivitas HIV dan meningkatkan risiko kematian bagi penderita HIV. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui prediktor yang berhubungan dengan kejadian TB pada ODHA di salah satu RS tahun 2014-2016. Desain studi yang digunakan adalah cross sectional dengan menggunakan data register ART dan Rekam Medis. Sampel berjumlah 817 pasien HIV. This study aims to map the incidence of readmission in JKN participants admitted to thirteen partner hospitals of BPJS-Health in Sukabumi. Stigma terhadap ODHA menjadi salah satu hambatan paling besar dalam pencegahan, perawatan, pengobatan, dan dukungan HIV/AIDS. Pengetahuan tentang HIV/AIDS mempengaruhi terjadinya stigma terhadap ODHA. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui hubungan pengetahuan tentang HIV/AIDS dengan stigma terhadap ODHA di kalangan remaja usia 15-19 tahun di Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan data Survei Demografi dan Kesehatan Indonesia (SDKI) Tahun 2012 dengan disain cross-sectional. Sampel penelitian sebanyak 8.316 orang. Hasil studi menunjukkan 71,63% remaja mempunyai stigma terhadap ODHA, 49,10% remaja mempunyai pengetahuan yang kurang tentang HIV. Kematian bayi didefinisikan sebagai kematian yang terjadi pada tahun pertama kehidupan. Angka kematian bayi di Indonesia dan Kamboja sendiri masih berada diatas AKB Asia Tenggara, sedangkan Filipina sudah sama dengan AKB Asia Tenggara. Jarak kelahiran merupakan salah satu faktor yang memegang peran penting pada kematian bayi. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh jarak kelahiran terhadap kematian bayi di Indonesia, Filipina dan Kamboja. Penelitian menggunakan data dari Demographic Health Survey (DHS). Desain penelitian adalah cross sectional dan sampel pada masing-masing negara berjumlah 10.162, 4.741 dan 4.330 bayi. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan, jarak kelahiran < 18 bulan memiliki risiko paling besar terhadap kematian bayi di Indonesia (OR = 2,43: 95% CI 1,26 - 4,70), Kamboja (OR = 4,39: 95% CI 1,76 - 10,94) dibandingkan jarak kelahiran 18 - 23 bulan, 24 - 35 bulan dan > 36 bulan.
