Advocating Corporate Policy Change On Women's Health And Family Planning: Lessons From The Environmental Movement, Matthew Mcfall, Carolyn Rodehau, David Wofford

This brief presents key lessons from the environmental movement on effective strategies for driving changes in corporate policies and practices and creating new mechanisms for holding businesses accountable for environmental impacts. Corporate policies and voluntary and “soft law” standards may be unfamiliar to many women’s health advocates, but they are likely to have increasing importance in the years to come. The global health community can learn from the experience of environmentalists on how to engage businesses on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) standards and corporate practices around women’s health. The brief offers six recommendations for moving forward.

PURPOSE In California, the passage of SB493 in July of 2013 was a milestone in advancing pharmacy practice. Among other things, the new legislation allows pharmacists to provide routine immunizations without a protocol and furnish medications for international travelers for conditions not requiring a diagnosis. When developing a pharmacist-run travel health service, consideration must be given to multiple important factors, including pharmacist training, physician partnership, logistics, from scheduling to documentation, and the resources necessary to provide a travel health service.5 This article sets out to provide guidance and insight to pharmacists seeking to implement a travel health service.

The purpose of this study was to assess the state of chronic, non-cancer pain management education in Florida medical schools and residency programs. Surveys were developed and distributed to Florida allopathic and osteopathic medical schools. One survey was specific to students and residents and one to faculty. Confidence in their general education, as well as in treating patients with chronic, non-cancer pain, was measured. A majority of medical students and residents (59.5%), in addition to a majority of faculty (58.1%), agreed or strongly agree that more clinical time needs to be dedicated to chronic, non-cancer pain management education. As debate regarding sexuality education continues, STD, HIV, and teen pregnancy rates remain high. Garnering support is critical to ensure quality programs addressing these public health concerns. As part of a funded project to reduce adolescent sexual health issues in a large Florida county, this study assessed voter support for specific sexuality education topics. A survey was developed after reviewing existing instruments. The university’s Public Opinion Research Laboratory used random-digit-dialing to administer the survey (N=311). Most participants supported topics taught in middle school: dealing with pressure to have sex (85%), talking to parents about sex (90%), human anatomy/reproduction (91%), HIV/STDs …

Accessing fresh produce is often difficult for homebound seniors, leading to under-consumption and increased risk of chronic disease. Current Meals on Wheels (MOW) programs do not include fresh produce delivery. A MOW agency collaborated with a large non-profit university to design and evaluate the impact of a monthly produce delivery program to homebound seniors. The produce delivery program was systematically designed based on the constructs of the Health Belief Model. Quantitative and qualitative data was collected. We explored palliation practices and experiences among providers at university campus health centers to assess the availability and viability of non-opioid options for student patients. We interviewed 10 healthcare providers at the campus health center for a large research university in the southeastern United States. Data were collected via semi- structured interviews. Analyses of interview transcripts were performed via content analysis with open coding. We identified multiple barriers to non-opioid pain management. Non-opioid modalities were more likely to receive no insurance subsidy, and thus, to go unused even if clinically indicated. Providers also reported high levels of concern with potential …

Therapists’ perceptions of school-based mental health programs are considered to be an important factor in determining the effectiveness of a school based behavioral health model. This qualitative evaluation summarizes the perceptions of participant therapists on two different behavioral health models called Full Service Schools (FSS) and Full-Service Schools (FSS) Plus model that are currently being implemented in a large school district in Florida. FSS therapists provide therapy at a hub location whereas FSS Plus therapists work at one particular school. Fifty percent of middle schools and 35% of high schools in Hillsborough County, Florida, serve students at high-risk for teen birth and sexually transmitted infections. This study assessed the desired type of sexual health education (SHE), content, and support for SHE from residents in the districts. Descriptive and bivariate statistics were used to analyze 314 survey phone interviews with adults, and thematic analysis was used to analyze eight focus groups with 104 youth living in the high-risk school districts. The purpose of this study was to identify the injury rates and mechanisms of sports injuries among 5-11-year-old athletes, and to provide preliminary guidance for decreasing injuries in this population. A total of 1511 athletes ages 5- 11 playing football, soccer, baseball and softball participated in our research. One certified athletic trainer (ATC) used Reporting Information Online (RIO) to collect the data on athletic exposure, injuries and injury mechanisms weekly during the 2016-2017 season in Hillsborough County, Florida. In response to a global policy effort to increase school enrollment, in 1994 Malawi became one of the first low-income countries to eliminate primary school fees. Since then, Malawi has achieved nearly universal primary enrollment, however enrolling young Malawians in school has not translated into keeping them in school. This policy brief describes the nature and consequences of school violence in rural Malawi—a common experience for both girls and boys. Girls in sub-Saharan Africa are disproportionately affected by child marriage; by 2050, half of the girls married during childhood will reside in Africa. The negative consequences of the practice are numerous and powerful, spanning health, welfare, development, and demographic domains. Yet, there is limited evidence on what works to delay child marriage in different cultural contexts and even less information on programmatic cost.
