Ethical Perspectives Of Direct-To-Consumer Genetic Testing, Pawan Acharya, Rupesh Gautam

Direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing, which evolved from genomics is not free from controversies and ethical dilemmas. Conduction of genetic testing without direct communication between the users and certified medical professionals has aroused many ethical concerns. We discuss some ethical dilemmas surrounding DTC genetic testing in terms of quality assurance of the test, information communication process of the result, confidentiality of test result and the right to privacy, cost and price regulations, and user safety and harm mitigation. DTC genetic testing lies in the middle of a clash between liberal trade policies and state’s regulations as a case of extreme paternalism. …

Public outcry for radical isolation and quarantine policies followed the first Ebola diagnosis in the United States when Eric Duncan, upon his return home Oct 2014 from West Africa, then in the midst of a catastrophic Ebola epidemic, tested positive for Ebola. Likewise, the Dec 2014 Disneyland measles outbreak unleashed an angry backlash against parents who refused to have their children vaccinated; and there was public momentum to repeal all legal exemptions to mandatory vaccination of school children. Xenotransplantation is not yet a clinical success and therefore pose no risk at present. The major concern of the researchers is that, the research on xenografting is ongoing, and possibly in the nearest future xenografting might become a clinical routine. In view of the call by the World Health Organization (WHO) for elimination of schistosomiasis as a public health problem by 2025, use of molluscicides in snail control to supplement chemotherapy–based control efforts is likely to increase in the coming years. The mechanisms of action of niclosamide, the active ingredient in the most widely used molluscicides, remain largely unknown. A better understanding of its toxicology at the molecular level will both improve our knowledge of snail biology and may offer valuable insights into the development of better chemical control methods for snails. BACKGROUND: In March 2014, the World Health Organization was notified of an outbreak of Zaire ebolavirus in a remote area of Guinea. The outbreak then spread to the capital, Conakry, and to neighboring countries and has subsequently become the largest epidemic of Ebola virus disease (EVD) to date.

METHODS: From March 25 to April 26, 2014, we performed a study of all patients with laboratory-confirmed EVD in Conakry. Mortality was the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included patient characteristics, complications, treatments, and comparisons between survivors and nonsurvivors.

RESULTS: Of 80 patients who presented with symptoms, 37 had laboratory-confirmed EVD. Among confirmed …

Racial prejudice and stereotyping in gay and bisexual communities may be important contextual factors that contribute to racial disparities in HIV. In an effort to challenge race-based stereotypes regarding gay and bisexual men’s sexuality, we sought to determine the extent to which race and ethnicity were associated with (1) racial homophily (i.e., same-race partnerships), (2) sexual behavior (e.g., number of partners, condomless anal sex (CAS), sexual position (top/versatile/bottom)), and (3) perceived penis size and size satisfaction. Fleck’s Genesis and Development of a Scientific Fact foregrounds claims traditionally excluded from reception, often regarded as opposed to fact, scientific claims that are increasingly seldom discussed in connection with philosophy of science save as examples of pseudo-science. I am especially concerned with scientists who question the epidemiological link between HIV and AIDS and who are thereby discounted—no matter their credentials, no matter the cogency of their arguments, no matter the sobriety of their statistics—but also with other classic examples of so-called pseudo-science including homeopathy and other sciences, such as cold fusion. Occupational exposures to solar ultraviolet (UV-AB) radiation can result in significant health risks including accelerated skin aging, sun burn and skin cancer. Personal protective clothing has been shown to provide useful barriers against such radiation exposures. However, the protection offered by clothing can vary significantly depending on layering, stretch, composition, color, and moisture content. Controlled laboratory tests were performed to determine the penetration characteristics of UV-AB radiation through selected textile materials including natural fibers as well as synthetic fibers. While on-line education has experienced the greatest growth, the use of remote laboratories in research and teaching is relatively new. The development of a remote ergonomics laboratory using a new Internet technology is described.
