This paper seeks to contextualize global development efforts by highlighting specific local realities among the community of Bhopal Disaster survivors in Madhya Pradesh, India. Every year, migrant farmworkers (MFWs) travel from southern Texas to Minnesota to provide the temporary labor needed to harvest seasonal Minnesotan crops. Migratory agricultural labor exposes workers to increased risk of occupational hazards, communicable disease, and chronic illness. However, the agricultural industry does not offer employer-based health insurance to these seasonal workers, and provides wages insufficient to otherwise cover the cost of health care services. This research investigates the financial and non-financial barriers to health care for Minnesota’s MFWs through interviews with staff from Migrant Health Service, Inc., the only federally-designated Migrant Health Center (MHC) in Minnesota. What are the effects of diabetes among Vietnamese seniors on themselves and their communities?

This study examines the role of the social and physical environment in influencing type 2 diabetes management among the Vietnamese senior community. The researchers employed a concurrent mixed methods approach, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative instruments. Eleven diabetics participated in individual interviews and seven non-diabetic caregivers comprised the focus group. The study results suggest that in the study sample, the most important factors in influencing management include factors in the physical environment, such as safety and location, as well as social factors, including individual and community …

The purpose of this study was to determine whether day of the week, season, federal holidays, and severe weather conditions affected emergency department (ED) volume in Montgomery County, Ohio. A retrospective analysis of ED visits from July 1, 2010 to July 1, 2011 was conducted. Meteorological data in Montgomery County was obtained from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). A two tailed Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to determine if the total number of ED visits were significantly associated with these variables. The average number of ED visits per day was 722.5. Multiple factors affect the health of individuals and communities. Current determinants of health addressed by the World Health Organization’s 2020 goals include social factors, physical environments, policymaking, and individual behaviors. Behavioral health, defined here as including both substance use disorders (including alcohol) and mental health disorders, is an additional determinant of physical health that is often disregarded or minimized by current health determinant models. According to L.G. Gamm, S. Stone, and S. Pittman, behavioral health disorders affect approximately half of the population in the United States over a lifetime and are among the most impairing of chronic diseases.

Background: Cholera outbreaks result in significant morbidity worldwide. Transmission of the disease may be influenced by weather fluctuations, such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and excessive rainfall, and socioeconomic status (SES), including income and education. El Niño events may influence many aspects of the climate, including the amount of rainfall occurring in a given year and surface water temperature. Introduction: Community-based distribution (CBD) has been successfully applied to family planning (FP) services worldwide. It forms the basis for the large lady health worker (LHW) programme in Pakistan which serves a limited number of women with contraception services. Thus, the concept has seen limited application in Pakistan. We present the outcomes of a CBD model that was implemented in 49 districts across Pakistan by a non-government organization (NGO).

Environmentalists, social scientists, and economists have long critiqued the enduring impacts of the Green Revolution’s diffusion of agricultural technologies throughout the Global South. However, largely missing from the myriad analyses is the relationship between those technologies, namely pesticides, and health outcomes. This thesis explores the social and biological mechanisms through which excessive pesticide use culminated into adverse reproductive health outcomes for rural women in the Global South. The study sought to identify noteworthy differences between community residents’ perceptions and volunteer researchers’ perceptions, indicating the importance of including community members in community health research. In order to handle this increased patient load, health professionals must be brought in from outside the area, often from surrounding states.
