Background: The food truck industry in the U.S. has rapidly expanded, with an average growth of 7.9 % from 2017 to 2022. Food truck workers are potentially exposed to harmful airborne contaminants such as particulate matter (PM) and aldehydes produced during cooking process. Prophylactic peritoneal dialysis (PD) in neonates undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has proven to be safe and improve outcomes. Understanding which neonates would most benefit from prophylactic PD is needed to optimize care. Objective: We sought to validate patient-specific characteristics associated with the need for PD in neonates requiring CPB. Instrumental variable (IV) methods are causal analysis techniques used on observational data to address confounding, provided that certain assumptions are met. In the usual observational setting, some exposure of interest �� is associated with some outcome of interest ��, but confounders �� could distort the measure of the association between �� and ��. Highly effective cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) modulators promote improved growth and weight gain in subsets of the CF population. Randomized clinical trials (RCT) are the gold standards for clinical trials as they reduce bias and minimize variability between different arms of a study. One of the drawbacks of these designs is their lack of flexibility to incorporate patient’s preference, which may reduce recruitment rates and/or reduce patient’s tolerance if they receive a non-preferred treatment. The aim of this dissertation is to determine whether depression is associated with clinical (relapses and disability worsening) and MRI outcomes in multiple sclerosis (MS) by conducting a secondary data analysis of the CombiRx clinical trial. Over the past decade, the discovery of novel genetic loci on chromosome 22q, apolipoprotein-L1 (APOL1), has given insights into the racial differences in kidney outcomes at the population level. APOL1 risk alleles are unique to African ancestry and confer increased susceptibility to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) especially among individuals without diabetes. However, the diseases do not occur in all who inherit these alleles. Current efforts are driven towards identifying the factors that can interact with APOL1 in the development of kidney diseases.
