In 1988, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) was launched with the goal of eradicating polio by the year 2000. After 25 years, several dynamics still challenge this large public health campaign with new cases of polio being reported annually. We examine the roots of this initiative to eradicate polio, its scope, the successes and setbacks during the last 25 years and reflect on the current state of affairs. We examine the social and political factors that are barriers to polio eradication. Options are discussed for solving the current impasse of polio eradication: using force, respecting individual freedoms and gaining …

Chin, MD, MBA is a Distinguished Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he focuses on novel industry/academic research partnerships and preparing health systems and academic medical centers for success under accountable care.

Dr. Chin will describe the Maryland-All payer system as a model of innovative population-based reimbursement. He will discuss early adaptive strategies, including ways in which health care systems will need to change. Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS): a vascular tumor associated with HHV8 and HIV infection

KS burden at Maputo Central Hospital (MCH):

•Referral center for all of southern Mozambique, 1500 beds, >65% HIV+ patients on medical services

•Dermatology ward: 50 beds, >30% of admitted patients suffer from Kaposi’s sarcoma and its complications

•10-15 cases/month admitted with advanced KS; additional 15-20 cases/month treated outpatient

•KS is the most common form of malignancy seen at MCH among men, second most frequent among women

Current KS standard of care:

•First line treatment: chemo- and concomitant antiretroviral-therapy

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to evaluate the burden of direct and indirect costs borne by recalled patients after a false positive screening mammogram.

METHODS: Women aged 40-75 years undergoing screening mammography were identified from a U.S. commercial claims database. Women were required to have 12 months pre- and 6 months post-index enrollment to identify utilization and exclude patients with subsequent cancer diagnoses. Recall was defined as the use of diagnostic mammography or breast ultrasound during 6 months post-index. Descriptive statistics were presented for recalled and non-recalled patients; differences were compared using the chi square test. Out-of-pocket costs …

Apremilast is compared to best supportive care (BSC), and response to treatment is assessed after a trial period of 16 weeks, which corresponds to the primary efficacy endpoint in the apremilast clinical trials. DES is a technique that is event-based and models a population at the individual level in terms of utility, costs, and resource use. The DES was implemented as a series of input, calculation, and output flowcharts in Arena®. The DES reported an incremental QALY per patient of 0.16 and incremental cost per patient of $17,325. INTRODUCTION

Obesity is a major national public health concern and is strongly associated with increased morbidity and mortality.¹ Specifically, obesity is correlated to increased frequency in coronary artery disease², type two diabetes³, some cancers⁴, and other serious health conditions⁵. An epidemiological study of 21 developed countries found that increased waist size, weight, and BMI were all associated with low income.⁷ Importantly, obesity has a high prevalence among the homeless population, one study finding 42.8% of homeless women obese.¹⁷ It has been reported that 39% of sheltered homeless Americans are …

• Teens that grow up in poor, blighted neighborhoods are at risk for a variety of negative outcomes, including poor health.¹

• In Philadelphia and many other urban communities, disparities in race, income, and education impact access to and consumption of fresh, healthy foods.²
