Local Public Health In Financial Crises: Common Decision Drivers For Changes In Services Due To Economic Downturn, Gulzar H. Shah

We measured the impact of the 2008-2010 economic recession on local health departments (LHDs) across the United States. Between 2008 and 2010, we conducted 3 Web-based, cross-sectional surveys of a nationally representative sample of LHDs to assess cuts to budgets, workforce, and programs. By early 2010, more than half of the LHDs (53%) were experiencing cuts to their core funding. In excess of 23 000 LHDs jobs were lost in 2008-2009. Research Objective: This study investigates organizational and community characteristics associated with the likelihood of local health departments to conduct community health assessments (CHAs).

Study Design: For this observational study, we used data from the 2010 National Profile of Local Health Departments Study (Profile). Using the FIPS codes for the county and place, additional data were merged with Profile data to capture community characteristics. To compute estimates of community characteristics for LHDs involving multiple cities/counties, we computed population weighted averages. In order to estimate unbiased population parameters, we used appropriate statistical weights in all analyses, to account for disproportionate non-responses …

Research Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify potential modifiable factors that can protect local health departments from job losses and budget cuts during periods of economic stress.

Study Design: This was a retrospective cohort study which used data from census surveys of local health departments (LHDs) which were conducted in 2005 and 2010 by the National Association of County and City Health Officials. The 2005 survey data served as the source of independent variables, which were grouped around domains of organization, revenue, and services. Data Sets and Sources: Archival data (primarily state statutes), secondary data from previous qualitative comparative research on Deep South public health organization, secondary data from previous surveys, and oral interviews and written communication.

Data Sets and Sources: Transcripts of interviews with 12 members of an expert panel representing researchers and practitioners working in PHSSR and Evidence-Based Public Health.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the hypothesis that outdoor daily walking, as an exercise, has an effect on the rate of mortality among those elderly people in the Iowa 65+ Rural Health Study (RHS). RHS is a prospective longitudinal cohort study of 8 years follow-up from 1981 to 1989. It consists of a random sample of 3,673 individuals (1,420 men and 2,253 women) aged 65 or older living in Washington and Iowa counties of the State of Iowa. While concussions are prevalent in soccer, outside the US there has been limited investigation into soccer players' knowledge and attitudes regarding concussions. The purpose of the study was to access English soccer player' concussion knowledge and attitudes. This study used a cross sectional mixed methodology design. Participants included 26 respondents (Age: 23.4 ± 4.5 years, playing experience 16.4 ± 4.4 years) playing for a Championship team in England (Response rate: 89.6%). Fifty percent of respondents had a diagnosed concussion history. Lead poisoning is a significant public health problem with paint from old housing exposing thousands of children and leading to negative health and social outcomes. Identifying the highest risk children exposed to lead is important to public health agencies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and assess the efficacy of a new geographically-based lead risk model that when combined with a child's physical address, predicts the extent of a child's risk of lead poisoning on a numeric risk scale.
