An 80-year-old male farmer (the victim) died when he was run over by the right rear wheel of his tractor. He had backed the tractor to the door of a shed in order to hook a tiller to it. After parking the tractor on a slight incline in front of the shed, he left it in neutral while he went inside for the tiller. The parking brake did not hold, however, and the tractor began to roll. A 51-year-old male electrician (the victim) died after falling approximately six feet to the concrete floor of a fertilizer plant. The victim had been doing electrical work while standing on an aluminum extension ladder at a switch box attached to a steel post near a rear exit of the plant. His co-worker, who was approximately 20 feet away, heard him hit the floor, but did not see him fall. The co-worker ran for help. A 911 call was placed at 8:46 am, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel arrived in three minutes. The victim was transported to the local hospital, …

The rapid increase in the number and quantities of chemicals released into the environment has been accompanied by a lack of adequate pre-released testing for advance health outcomes. Chemicals which serve as feed stock to millions of industries all around the world to produce and process food, cosmetics, equipment, and energy to propel industries, automobiles, home heating and electricity have serious adverse health consequences. They are hazardous. These substances can explode, ignite, react and corrode. Adapting the definition of the international program on chemical safety, a "hazard" is a source of danger. Chain Saw Hazard Alert, Kentucky Injury Prevention And Research Center

Kentucky Haz Alerts--Tractors/Logging

A review of 74 cases of chain saw injuries to Kentucky farmers revealed that most occurred while the farmers were clearing fence lines. Most of the injuries occurred in the spring, from March through April, and in the fall, from October through November. As for time of day, most happened in the morning, from 8:30 to 10, and in the early afternoon, from 12 to 3.

Described below are two representative incidents, followed by recommendations for prevention of similar injuries.

La présente étude a pour but d'analyser le processus de génération de bruit de meulage de tôles peu épaisses. Ce procédé est très répandu dans l’industrie aéronautique, les niveaux de bruit relevés à l'oreille de l'opérateur peuvent atteindre 98 dB(A), en mesures instantanées.

Les résultats de cette analyse sont :

• La force d'excitation dynamique est une suite d'impacts générés par la meuleuse à cause de sa forme géométrique très irrégulière et de la grande vitesse de rotation.
• Les tôles de faibles épaisseurs ont une densité modale élevée et une impédance d'entrée équivalente sur toute leur surface. Ceci implique que tout …

Ce rapport présente et discute les résultats obtenus par QI Recherche et Développement Technologique dans le cadre de l'activité de recherche "Conditions optimales d'utilisation des nettoyants à plancher : Gras animaux et végétaux sur vinyle et grès". Le projet de recherche a débuté le 4 juillet 1997 pour se terminer avec le dépôt de ce rapport final, le 10 juin 1998. Cette activité s'inscrit dans l'effort de recherche de l'IRSST pour réduire l'incidence des chutes et glissades qui, entre 1993 et 1995, ont été à l'origine de plus de 12,800 cas de lésions chez les travailleurs du Québec.

Il est reconnu que l’origine des maux de dos réside partiellement dans des perturbations du rôle mécanique normal des tissus et structures internes du tronc. This quantitative study documents, analyses and discusses the accident experience of Commonwealth employees in Western Australia from 1 July 1993 to 2 December 1995 as recorded on 1663 accident report forms. The research addresses the problem of lack of knowledge of accidents in the Commonwealth sector of the Western Australian work force. Its purpose is to identify possible areas of health and safety improvement and highlight where accident frequency may be reduced. A 75-year-old farmer was killed when he was run over by a tractor and disc attachment. The farmer attempted to start the engine on a tractor while he stood on the ground beside it, a practice which was not unusual for him. The transmission had been left in gear and when the ignition was started the tractor lurched forward knocking the victim to the ground. The tractor continued to move forward, running over the victim.
