Few examples of intrachromosomal insertions have been described. These usually result from deletion of a segment of chromosome material, with insertion of the deleted material elsewhere on the same chromosome. Previous insertional translocations have been identified through a proband who has either a deletion or a duplication of the inserted segment. We describe a family which has two probands, one with a duplication and one with a deletion of the inserted segment. The unbalanced chromosomes probably resulted from an uneven number of crossovers between the breakpoints in the chromosome 11 of the father, who carries a balanced intrachromosomal insertion of …

This article will study and evaluate the efforts of the state and the federal government to approach the problem of procreational autonomy and to resolve the perimeters of its recognition and application. In order to posit a framework for principled decision making, an analysis of the Australian and British efforts to deal with this problem, respectively, through their Waller and Warnock Commissions, will be undertaken together with a consideration of the famous case of Melbourne's "orphan" Rios embryos where, for the very first time, the issue of excess fertilized embryos was presented.

Effect Of Membrane Filtration Of Antimalarial Drug Solutions On In Vitro Activity Against Plasmodium Falciparum, J. Kevin Baird, C. Lambros

Antimalarial activities ofchloroquine, mefloquine, amodiaquine, and quinine in vitro against Plasmodium falciparum were diminished as a consequence ofmembranefiltration. Filtered drug solutions gave ID₅₀ values up to 25-fold greater than those of non-filtered (ethanol-sterilized) drug solutions. Loss ofactivity byfiltration was overcome by increasing the drug concentration prior to filtration. Water solutions filtered through Millex-GSfilter units consistently showed an absorbance maximum at 277 nm, accompanied by a lesser peak at 225 nm. Water filtrates from Nucleopore and Millex-G Vfilters showed no absorbance at 277 nm and only slight absorbance was evidentfor the Gelmanfilter unit. The zinc status of twelve lacto-ovo-vegetariah pregnant women and seventeen non-vegetarian pregnant women was evaluated. Zinc intakes were calculated from three-day dietary records and twenty-four hour dietary histories. Plasma zinc levels were drawn during the last trimester of pregnancy and approximately ten weeks postpartum. Gestational age at birth, birthweight, and APGAR scores of the infants born were obtained from the medical charts. Dietary zinc intakes for the vegetarians (10.5 ± 4.0 mg) did not differ significantly from the intakes of the non-vegetarians (10.9 ± 3.0 mg). The vegetarian last trimester plasma zinc levels (47.9 ± 12.4 mcg/dl) and postpartum plasma …

Patterns Of Fatty Acid Release From Endogenous Substrates By Human Platelet Homogenates And Membranes, A Derksen, P Cohen

We describe a method for measuring the release of fatty acids from endogenous substrates of human platelet homogenates and membranes. The method depends on the availability of lipids whose fatty acids are odd-chained and therefore suitable as internal reference compounds that, at the time of lipid extraction, can be added to an incubation to permit subsequent quantification of the content of free fatty acids or fatty acids esterified to specific lipids. We found four types of lipolytic activities in human platelets. In homogenates at pH 4.0 a triglyceride lipase operated as shown by the synchrony of triglyceride degradation and release …

Background: The novel coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spread rapidly after its identification in December 2019 to cause a global pandemic. The respiratory tract is the primary site of infection, and there is a large range in the severity of respiratory illnesses caused by the virus. Defining molecular and cellular factors for protection from severe disease and death has been a goal to better understand and to predict and mitigate the effects of SARS-CoV-2 and future coronaviruses.

It was the purpose of this study to identify the attitudes of a selected group of women which influenced their participation in Papanicolaou testing. These attitudes were inferred from the reasons women gave for obtaining the test. The subjects were randomly selected from the telephone book of a medium-sized town in Southern California. The 135 women who participated in the telephone interview were considered to be the respondents in the study.

Theses

The discovery of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in mammalian brain and its rigorous identification was reported in 1950 (1,2,3). Enzymatic experiments with brain acetone powder revealed that GABA was formed by the decarboxylation of glutamic acid and that the enzyme, glutamic acid decarboxylase, required pyridoxal phosphate as the co-factor (4,5). Radioactive tracer studies in vivo and in vitro with glutamic acid and glucose verfied the fact that the former was the precursor of GABA (6,7).
