Behavioral Determinants Of Exercise-Related Injury Prevention Program Participation, Emily M. Hartley
Behavioral Determinants Of Exercise-Related Injury Prevention Program Participation, Emily M. Hartley
Health Services Research Dissertations
Lower extremity injuries are common among the physically active population. There are many negative consequences associated with these injuries which have led to a shift in clinical practice towards prevention. Exercise-related injury prevention programs (ERIPPs) were created to prevent musculoskeletal injuries that occur due to participation in physical activity. However, one of the major limitations to their effectiveness is the compliance of the users to complete the prescribed exercises. It is imperative to better understand the reasons why compliance is low to develop implementation strategies and improve compliance rates.
The overarching purpose of this dissertation was to gain a better …

Primary Care-Related Emergency Department Use, Tiffany Wetz
Primary Care-Related Emergency Department Use, Tiffany Wetz
Theses & Dissertations
Primary care-related emergency department use has become a focal point in the United States considering health reform and changes made to the delivery model and reimbursement mechanisms. Emergency departments serve as critical access points within the United States delivery system because important medical resources are made available for all members within the community. However, a gap in the literature exists due to a lack of consensus regarding factors that influence emergency department use for primary care-related health needs. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between demographic, social, economic, geographic, and need factors that influenced use of …

Long Term Services and Supports
The aging of the baby boom generation is projected to dramatically increase the population aged 65 and older in the coming decades. In particular, those aged 85 and older (the ‘oldest old’) are expanding at a faster rate than any other age group and by 2050 are expected to make up 4.5 percent of the population, compared to 1.9 percent in 2012. Faster growth in the percentage of older people (65+) in rural than in urban areas is likely to challenge the healthcare and long term services and supports (LTSS) capacity in many rural communities.

Rural Family Physicians In Patient Centered Medical Homes Have A Broader Scope Of Practice, Lars E. Peterson, Bo Fang
Rural & Underserved Health Research Center Publications
Overview
- Rural family physicians often have a broader scope of practice, defined as the range of clinical and procedural services that they provide, than urban family physicians. The Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model of care is intended to provide accessible and comprehensive care, but little is known about how practicing in a PCMH is associated with rural family physicians’ scope of practice.
- Using data from 18,846 family physicians nationally, we found that rural family physicians working in PCMH practices generally provide a wider scope of clinical and procedural services than those not working in PCMH practices.

Overview of Key Findings
- Little is known about whether rural family physicians provide a broader scope of practice, defined as the range of clinical and procedural services that they provide, than metropolitan family physicians.
- Using data from 18,846 family physicians, we examined variations in the provision of 21 clinical services (e.g., inpatient care, home visits, and obstetrics) and 18 procedural services (e.g., prenatal ultrasound, endoscopy, and office skin procedures) across metropolitan, large rural, small rural, and frontier areas.
- We found that the percentage of family physicians providing each type of clinical and procedural service rises with increasing rurality.

HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND) is an emergent public health issue in developed countries. Consequently, people living with HIV who experience HAND will increasingly require support from community-based HIV service providers. The objective of our qualitative study was to identify barriers service providers face in addressing HAND among people living with HIV. Thirty-three providers from 22 AIDS service organizations across Ontario, Canada, were interviewed. Using thematic analysis, three types of barriers were identified: (a) personal/professional, (b) service access, and (c) systemic. This paper draws attention to HAND-related obstacles that service providers encounter in their work and presents options to overcome them.
