Identification And Ranking Of Stressors In Nuclear Medicine Technology, Scott R. Sechrist

The purpose of this study was to identify the most significant stressors in the field of nuclear medicine technology. A sample of convenience of 25 nuclear medicine technologists was used to generate a list of 35 stressors specific to the occupation. Sixty-three randomly selected nuclear medicine technologists responded to a mailed questionnaire which asked the technologist to assess the relative stressfulness of each of the 35 items on a scale of "0 to 1000". Data from the 59 valid responses indicated that equipment malfunctions, add on exams, uncooperative physicians, lack of staff, and uncooperative patients were the most significant stressors …

The purpose of this study was to determine the general Job satisfaction level of direct care mental health employees and to determine any significant differences in Job satisfaction levels between fulltime and part-time employees. The sample consisted of 60 direct care mental health employees In a residential treatment center in Virginia. There were 28 respondents for a 47% response rate.

The 20 item Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (Short Form> and a demographic questionnaire were the survey instruments used. The Centers for Disease Control projects that nine thousand persons with AIDS will be alive in New England in 1991, representing a sevenfold increase from 1986. Our analysis indicates that more than 2 percent of medical/surgical beds in New England will be used for AIDS care by 1991, representing 766 fully occupied hospital beds. The direct cost of providing hospital care to New England's AIDS patients is projected to be $195.2 million in 1991, reflecting 3 percent of all hospital inpatient costs in the region.

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article presents an overview of cost issues related to AIDS. Data from the Massachusetts Cost of AIDS Study are combined with epidemiological projections to estimate the cost of treating people diagnosed with AIDS in New England. Aggregate inpatient, ambulatory, and home care costs are estimated to be $96.9 million and $524.8 million through 1987 and 1991, respectively. These estimates represent a relatively small percentage of total health care costs for all illnesses over the same time period.

The National Health Planning and Resources Development Act. Public Law 93-641, the last major step in the regulation of the health care system, created a network of health system agencies and state level health planning agencies. Subsequent legislation, the Health Planning and Resources Development Amendment 1929, Public Law 96-79, amended 1974 Law and changed the role and function of health systems agencies to include more regulatory activities. By 1981, the activities of Health System Agencies were being curtained by the action of the Reagan administration.

The purpose of this research was to determine what factors, if any, led to the development of a preferred provider organization and if these factors were related to sponsorship. A survey instrument was developed and mailed to a random sampling of 90 existing preferred provider organizations' executive directors for their completion. A Two-Factor Contingency Table Analysis was compiled. Chi-square, and the Contingency factor, C, were computed and tested at the .05 level of significance. The complexity of the issues involved with providing appropriate health care and social services from the appropriate setting to people over age 65 can hardly be overstated. One of the present debates in the field focuses on the value of institutions as the customary setting for providing health care; the arguments are based on considerations of economic efficiency and the recipient's quality of life. Some of the debators suggest deinstitutionalizing as many of the health care recipients as possible, while simultaneously upgrading the quality and quantity of home based support services. Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul

Comparison of five methods for calculating gas chromatographic peaks (disc integration, triangulation, peak height X width at half height, R_t X peak height, and peak height) shows no significant difference in the calculated results when aldrin, heptachlor epoxide, and dieldrin are injected into a gas chromatograph equipped with electron capture detector.

Problems are associated with the calculation of toxaphene, chlordane, DDT, and BHC. The author makes suggestions for calculating these four residues when present individually and in combinations with other pesticides. Use of the last four toxaphene peaks compares favorably with results obtained by using the entire toxaphene curve. …

Diphenylamine-ZnCI, has been evaluated as a chromogenic agent for detection of toxaphene, DDT, and chlordane on Al₂O₃ a thin layer plates. Characteristic colors were obtained for these pesticides; a lower level of about 5 μg was detectable. Color reactions of 34 pesticides at the 20 μg level are presented.

There has been much lay and medical concern regarding toxic effects of insecticides on the general population. In addition to direct toxic effects, it is suspected that insecticidal application has deleterious physical effects on persons with respiratory diseases. To evaluate some of these problems, the authors have attempted to quantitate actual absorption, symptoms, and laboratory evidence of intoxication in persons with varying degrees of exposure to parathion. By means of controlled observations, the respiratory effect of application of this compound on persons with bronchial asthma was also measured. Some organic phosphorus pesticides have been determined successfully by polarography (1-7). However, in most cases the methods were used to determine the pesticide in commercial formulations. Little has been reported on the polarographic determination of microgram amounts of these pesticides such as those encountered in pesticide residue analysis.

Many of the methods used for the determination of these pesticides are nonspecific. They are based on cholinesterase assay (8- 12), radioactive tracer analysis (13, 14), total phosphorus (15-17), and paper chromatography (18-24).

The study was conducted in an attempt to identify factors in the work situation which seemed to have had bearing on accidents involving nursing service employees, and to analyze and classify these factors for use in accident prevention and safety education activities. An accident was any sudden and unexpected event which resulted in a physical injury.
