Self-Advocacy In The Exam Room: Tools And Techniques For Contraceptive Care, Angelique Bouthot
Self-Advocacy In The Exam Room: Tools And Techniques For Contraceptive Care, Angelique Bouthot
Community Engagement Student Work
Sexual and reproductive healthcare is fraught with both historic and current examples of oppression, systemic abuse, and injustice across gender, race, class, and ability. Still, high quality and responsive contraceptive care may provide numerous health benefits, the ability to prevent and plan pregnancies, and opportunities for exercising autonomy and greater educational and economic attainment. Many initiatives focus on quality improvement at the institutional or provider level, but these do not get to every institution or every provider. This project proposes an approach that reduces harm and maximizes benefit on an individual level while larger systemic changes occur. In a workshop …

Adolescent E-Cigarette Use, Carley Lueken
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing DNP Capstone Projects
Adolescent e-cigarette use in the United States (U.S.) is trending upward at a concerning rate. Many of the short-term and long-term effects of e-cigarette use are unknown. However, scientists do know that e-cigarettes can have harmful effects on the respiratory system playing a role in E-cigarette or Vaping Use-Associated Lung Injury (EVALI) and Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Additionally, some e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is widely known to have negative effects on the developing adolescent brain. Previously, there is only one e-cigarette prevention program that has been developed, implemented, and evaluated in the U.S. Thus, showing the need for further research …

How The Symptoms And Conditions Associated With Diabetes Can Impact Mobility And Health Of The Individual: A Literature Review, Kaitlin Grace Fotis
Honors Projects
A literature review on diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic amyotrophy, sores, ulcers, and amputations, and nephropathy and how, through this snowballing journey, physical therapy can aid an individual. Diabetes can impact the mortality and morbidity of an individual and it alone can have lifelong effects upon the individual. These effects may include dependency upon medication, lifestyle modifications, and diet and physical activity guidelines. If their condition were to worsen, they could find themselves battling circulatory issues and neuropathy thereby hindering their physical function. Many individuals with circulatory issues, diabetic neuropathy, and diabetic amyotrophy develop injuries on their feet like ulcers and …

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works
In low- and middle-income countries, almost three-fourths of women in the labour force lack maternity protection. In the Philippines, current laws do not guarantee paid maternity leave to workers in the informal economy. A non-contributory maternity cash transfer to informal sector workers could be used to promote social equity and economic productivity and could provide health benefits by helping mothers meet their breastfeeding goals. The objective of the study is to provide a realistic cost estimate and to assess the financial feasibility of implementing a publicly financed, non-contributory maternity cash transfer programme to the informal sector in the Philippines. Using …
Barriers To Relational Continuity Of Care For Undergraduate College Students In Southeastern South Dakota, Laura E. Nelson
Barriers To Relational Continuity Of Care For Undergraduate College Students In Southeastern South Dakota, Laura E. Nelson
Honors Thesis
In health care, the patient’s relationship with his or her provider serves as a foundation upon which health care decisions are guided and health outcomes are addressed. Relational continuity of care refers to the presence of a sustained (long-term) relationship between a primary care provider (PCP) and a patient. Such continuity of care has been linked with improved health outcomes, reduced mortality, lower health care costs, increased patient satisfaction, and increased delivery of preventative services. Relational continuity of care tends to be low amongst young adults, especially college students. The reasons for this – and the salient barriers to relational …
