Aviation English, based on a coded jargon from World War II, is a mandatory form of communication for pilots and controllers in international airspace. The International Civil Aviation Organization also requires proficiency in Conversational English, for use in non-standard communication. However, our past research indicates that Aviation English and Conversational English are distinct varieties of English, suggesting that assumptions about native English speaker proficiency and additive learning for non-native English speakers may be false. In applying the Arc-Segmented Attitude Reference (ASAR) symbology in headmounted displays (HMDs), it is uncertain if there is an optimal position for the symbology within the display. Vision science literature regarding visual asymmetries suggests that performance may differ depending upon the combination of the location of this symbology within the visual field and whether the user is interpreting the symbology to make categorical judgments (e.g., is the aircraft rolling left or right?) or coordinate judgments (e.g., what is the aircraft’s roll angle). A Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST) study of 18 worldwide loss-of control accidents and incidents determined that the lack of external visual references was associated with a flight crew’s loss of attitude awareness or energy state awareness in 17 of these events. CAST recommended development and implementation of virtual day-Visual Meteorological Condition (VMC) display systems, such as synthetic vision systems, to promote flight crew attitude awareness similar to a day-VMC environment. Single Pilot Operations (SPO) represent a viable concept for commercial aviation in near future. It will require different training regimes to contemporary airliners’ pilots because the single-pilot’s and remote operator’s (including the dispatcher’s) responsibilities and accompanying procedures will change, both in air and on ground. Aviation safety organizations have recommended that airline pilots are trained for startle and surprise. However, little information is available on useful training interventions. Therefore, a training intervention trial was executed during airline recurrent simulator training. The method consisted of a slow visual scan from the side-window, over the instruments, ending with facing the other pilot. Following a recorded video instruction, 38 airline pilots in two-pilot crews performed a training scenario in which they could apply the method. Data on application and evaluation of the method were obtained from each pilot. Few pilots actually applied the method (18.4%), and many gave …

Advancements in technology has made obtaining a graphical/textual preflight weather briefing easier than a traditional verbal briefing. This study compared weather briefings delivered in a verbal format (i.e., written narrative) to those delivered in a graphical format (i,e., radar map plus textual data) in a within-subjects study that altered the order in which participants received each format. Thirty-six pilot participants read and responded to weather briefings for two flight scenarios that when put together, created a simulated multi-leg flight. Dynamic spatial ability is supposed to be involved in a critical process of air traffic controllers, namely conflict detection. The present paper aims at testing whether dynamic spatial ability improves with air traffic control training and/or experience. We designed a laboratory task to assess the performance in predicting if two moving disks would collide or not. We conducted a crosssectional study with four groups of participants : ATCO trainees at the beginning (N=129), middle (N=80) or end of training (N=66) and experienced ATCOs (N=14). Perceptual speed is an important attribute for success as a pilot and has been assessed in many pilot selection batteries. The Tabular Speed Test (TST), a paper-and-pencil test of perceptual speed, was administered to 227 ab initio pilots and 152 licensed pilots who applied for employment at a large European airline. The airline had a multi-stage selection process including a computerized battery assessing quantitative and spatial abilities, short-term memory, psychomotor performance, multi-tasking, and personality. Situation awareness (SA) and flight performance may be intrinsically connected. Good SA can lead to good aeronautical decision making, and consequently better flight performance. Forty-three pilots participated in the study. Participants completed personality tests, a test of fluid intelligence, and a test for working memory. Participants flew a 15-minute flight scenario in an Elite PI-135 BATD, where participants received six SA questions. Airspeed, altitude, and heading were the flight performance variables. Low-level terrain-following systems require the ability to rapidly and accurately respond to the environment to prevent inadvertent actions. Catastrophic and fatal results could occur if missed cues or latency issues in data processing are encountered. Spiking neural networks (SNNs) have the computational ability to continuously process spike trains from rapid sensory input. However, most models of SNNs do not retain information from the spike train of a previous time step because the membrane potential is rapidly reset to a resting potential after activation. Benzodiazepines are some of the most commonly prescribed medications in the world. These sedative-hypnotics can provide rapid relief for symptoms like anxiety and insomnia, but are also linked to a variety of adverse effects (whether used long-term, short-term, or as needed). Many patients take benzodiazepines long-term without ever receiving evidence-based first-line treatments (e.g., psychotherapy, relaxation techniques, sleep hygiene education, serotonergic agents). This review discusses the risks and benefits of, and alternatives to benzodiazepines. We discuss evidence-based indications and contraindications, and the theoretical biopsychosocial bases for effectiveness, ineffectiveness and harm. This review discusses risks, benefits, and alternatives in patients already taking benzodiazepines when care transfers to a new clinician. Prescribers have the decision—sometimes mutually agreed-upon and sometimes unilateral—to continue, discontinue, or change treatment. This decision should be made based on evidence-based indications (conditions and timeframes), comorbidities, potential drug-drug interactions, and evidence of adverse effects, misuse, abuse, dependence, or diversion. We discuss management tools involved in continuation (e.g., monitoring symptoms, laboratory testing, prescribing contracts, state prescription databases, stages of change) and discontinuation (e.g., tapering, psychotherapeutic interventions, education, handouts, reassurance, medications to assist with discontinuation, and alternative treatments).

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of task complexity (TC) and time pressure (TP) on air traffic controller’s (ATC) performance and mental workload. Sixteen students enrolled in an aviation college completed four scenarios which were a subset of the ATCPrep software for the AT-SAT. Fifteen performance variables were measured (e.g., conflict resolution). Additionally, NASA-TLX was used to test participants’ mental workload. As expected, for most of the performance variables, high TC andhigh TP resulted in the lowest participant performance. For the three performance variables, TP had a differential effect on TC. We evaluate a newly developed symbology that provides the pilot predicted and advisory airspeed information. This information is not only based on the current state of the aircraft, but also takes into account the wind field ahead of the aircraft measured by an onboard LIDAR system. Airline pilots flew landing approaches in wind shear scenarios that demanded careful consideration of whether to land on go-aroundin JAXA's full flight simulator. Spatial skills are critical for flight safety. The current study investigatedwhetherincreased flight experience as a pilotwas associated with improved spatial skills, and in particular, theability to form a mental representation of a novel virtual environment.Pilotscompleted small-scalespatial ability tasks, travelled alongfour routes in a virtual environment, and then completed two tests that assessed memory for the locations of landmarks in the environment. Pilots with more flight experience did not have more accurate mental representations of the environment than individuals with less flight experience. Facial electromyography (fEMG) is an electromyographic measurement technique that has primarily been used as a tool for measuring affect, but previous experiments suggest that it also has the potential to help quantify cognitiveworkload. In the current study, two task-irrelevant facial muscles, corrugator supercilli and lateral frontalis, were monitored in real-time to determine whether they were sensitive to workload changes in a remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) task environment. Real-time signal processing techniques were applied to derive the median amplitude and zero-crossing rate from windowed fEMG data. Aviation English (AE) is the “primary dialect” of international aviation. Demonstrably, AE and Conversational English (CE) are distinct varieties of English. Pastresearch shows that AE is spoken more rapidly, with less inflectional variation and differentrhythm than CE. Differences are strong enough that AE and CEmaynot be mutually intelligible. Situation awareness (SA) has been investigated in the aviation industry for decades and recently has become more prominent in other industries. For example, healthcare has experienced tremendous growth in SA research and training. Despite agreement among researchers that SA is important for performance and safety in complex domains, less agreement exists for defining and measuring SA. Certain industries (e.g., aviation, healthcare, process control operations) often have specific methods on how to approach SA. These approaches of introducing employees and students to SA in a specific context may inadvertently limit their full appreciation and understanding of this construct.

Research showsthat a high percentage of weather-related General Aviation (GA) accidents can be attributed to pilots flying into Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) without experience or appropriate certifications to safely operate beyond Visual Flight Rules (VFR). To makesafety-critical decisions, pilots oftenuse weather indication delivered on screens of portable electronic devices. This information often is obsolete with a latency up to20 minutes. Early flying skills have been reported to strongly influence future flying skills. Few published studies have evaluated the comprehensive relationship among all flying training skills. This study evaluated three causal path models for flying skills that influenced flying performance rated by instructor pilots in five training phases. A covariance structure analysis showed that asequential model with a connection between the first and last phases was optimumfor representing flying training performance and skills. The flying skill acquired in the first training phase in a primary propeller aircraft influenced the last training skill in a fighter jet directly as well as indirectly. …

The concept of scalable autonomy with a guided access to lower automation levelsallows human UAV pilots to select the level of autonomy and enables the onboard automation to understand the pilot’s intent and offer support. To evaluate this concept, we conducted flightand simulationexperiments with German military personnel performing reconnaissance missions with a small UAV. We compared threeconfigurations. The high autonomy configuration completely prevents access to low-level functions. The naive approach configuration allows unrestricted access to all lower-level functions. For decades, spatial auditory displays have been considered to be a promising technology to help fight pilot disorientation and loss of SA. Inherently heads-up, these displays can provide time-critical spatial information to pilots about navigational targets, air and runway traffic, wingman location, and even the attitude of one’s aircraft without placing additional demands on the already over-tasked visual system.
