Patterns Of Stigma: Dance Therapy As An Intervention Method For People Living With Hiv, Elizabeth Jezorski May 2018

Patterns Of Stigma: Dance Therapy As An Intervention Method For People Living With Hiv, Elizabeth Jezorski

Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses

This paper will explore the impact that dance movement therapy (DMT) has for people living with HIV. DMT is an evidence-based modality that engages the body in the therapeutic process for individuals and groups in various settings. DMT has been shown to increase social connectedness, empathy and body awareness in many populations; however, there is a lack of research using DMT as an intervention for people with concealable stigma. Concealable stigma is an experience of oppression that can often be hidden or concealed. To explore this, four DMT sessions were implemented with people living with HIV. These sessions were analyzed …

Developing A Dance/Movement Therapy Approach To Qualitatively Analyzing Interview Data, Tomoyo Kawano Jan 2016

Developing A Dance/Movement Therapy Approach To Qualitatively Analyzing Interview Data, Tomoyo Kawano

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

The objective of this research was to develop a model for an embodied-artistic approach to analyzing interview data that could contribute to an enhanced narrative account and/or offer an alternate perspective. A new model was formulated by adapting and/or critically applying a combination of previously developed analytical frameworks. Dance/movement therapy (DMT) skills that encompass ways of listening through an embodied, empathic, aesthetic manner; and a movement observation and assessment tool, Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) were at the core of this explicatory process. The researcher’s movement preferences were identified in the preparatory phase with a certified movement analyst (CMA) as a …

A Theoretical Comparison Of Dance/Movement Therapy And Expressive Arts Therapy, Heidi Landgraf May 2013

A Theoretical Comparison Of Dance/Movement Therapy And Expressive Arts Therapy, Heidi Landgraf

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

This theoretical comparison of dance/movement therapy (DMT) and expressive arts therapy (EXA) was created in order to better understand the major principles and concepts behind each field. A brief history of the predecessors of each field was discussed, along with five principles from DMT and five concepts from EXA, as chosen by the writer and based on her preferences in alignment with her personal theory and methodology. The comparison that follows discussed the ways in which both fields converge, diverge, and complement one another. The fields have many points of agreement where there is only subtle difference in language, but …

Explorations Into Continuity: An Heuristic, Artistic Inquiry Into The Interplay Between Work As A Dance/Movement Therapist And Service Within The Bahá’Í Community, Elena M. Rezai May 2013

Explorations Into Continuity: An Heuristic, Artistic Inquiry Into The Interplay Between Work As A Dance/Movement Therapist And Service Within The Bahá’Í Community, Elena M. Rezai

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this thesis was to explore the concept of integration between two main aspects of my life: my professional career as a dance/movement therapist on an inpatient adolescent behavioral health unit, and service guided by Bahá’í teachings in a neighborhood-based setting. Literature reviewed encompassed instances of Rudolf von Laban’s Effort elements found in the Bahá’í Writings, as well as research on the integration between the mind, body and spirit, the history of religion and mental health, and the current relationship between religion and mental health. Both artistic inquiry and heuristic methodologies were used to guide my research. Through …

See The Path: Using Laban's Movement Scales To Address Spatial Awareness After Brain Injury, Kristina Fluty Aug 2010

See The Path: Using Laban's Movement Scales To Address Spatial Awareness After Brain Injury, Kristina Fluty

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

This single-participant quasi-experimental thesis study was an investigation of the implementation of Rudolf Laban’s dimensional and diagonal movement scales in individual dance/movement therapy sessions with an adult female recovering from brain injury. The main research question was “How will the implementation of Laban’s movement scales affect the participant’s general awareness of space?”

The Santa Barbara Sense of Direction Scale was used as a pre-test and post-test to record the participant’s self-reports of her spatial awareness. Eleven sessions were video-recorded and the participant’s movement during the scales was observed and notated by the primary researcher and a hired analyst using Laban …

Finding My Feet: A Dance/Movement Therapy Intern's Heuristic Inquiry Of Clinician Self-Care, Megan J. Blazek Aug 2010

Finding My Feet: A Dance/Movement Therapy Intern's Heuristic Inquiry Of Clinician Self-Care, Megan J. Blazek

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

This study is a heuristic exploration of the internship experience of one dance/movement therapy intern and the search for effective self-care methods to assist in maintaining a sense of calm and stability, as well as a sense of focus during the final academic year of a dance/movement therapy master’s program. Themes of personal and emotional stressors such as premenstrual dysphoric disorder, balancing personal and a newly emerging professional life, fitting personal religion into a secular field, trying to find self-confidence in a new creative and therapeutic role, and determining how much self-care is too much are all discussed. Previous research …
