Play is a major topic of conversation when discussing childhood development is associated with creativity and imagination. Although there has been some research involving the creative process amongst children, little has been explored in regards to expressive arts as a technique to further current studies on play. An Annotated Bibliography Of Creative Interventions Within Dance/Movement Therapy, Kaitlynn Kavanaugh

This annotated bibliography explores how creativity is integrated in dance/movement therapy (DMT) interventions. The central question guiding this research was: How is creativity explicitly implemented in DMT interventions, approaches, and/or theoretical frameworks? Literature was gathered from journal articles, books, book chapters, and online peer reviews; a total of fifteen sources were annotated. During the research process, several challenges emerged when searching for explicit explanations of creativity used within DMT. This included annotations from sources which described creativity used within DMT interventions, approaches and theoretical frameworks that did not explicitly define creativity. This purpose stemmed from the concept that it is not enough to believe that I am creative, but I wanted to know how and why. With the primary purpose to extend therapists’ knowledge base, open dialogue on treatment efficacy, and stimulate creative yet effective interventions, this two-phase qualitative study pursued the guiding research question, How do creative arts therapists use embodied interventions in the treatment of psychological trauma? Phase One of the study was conducted with music therapists who had extensive experience with trauma and reported on their experiences with and awareness of embodied trauma treatment through a broad spectrum of creative modalities. An ethnographic research study on the monthly gathering of a Chicagoan dancing community called Give Peace a Dance (GPD). The main goal of this study was to understand the potential therapeutic aspects of dance and creative self expression in a community setting. The ethnographic data was analyzed through the lens of Community Psychology, Chacian dance/movement therapy theory and Carl Rogers’ theory of creativity.
