The purpose of this phenomenological study is to understand the holistic phenomenon of infertility in order to assess the basic needs of women who struggle with infertility and the associated medical treatments. In order to address a comprehensive understanding of the experience of infertility, this study employed a body-mind perspective, which is based on the dance/movement therapy principle that “the body and the mind are inseparable”. Five women, who had experience with infertility, were invited to the study, and each participated in individual verbal and movement interviews. While there is some research on dance/movement therapy (DMT) and people of Color, there is no research specifically on the use of DMT with multiracial people. This heuristic study explored the embodied experience of being multiracial and how that experience could inform the practice of DMT to better meet the possible needs of multiracial clients. The researcher was a 24 year old multiracial female graduate student. Data collection lasted for 12 weeks and consisted of experiences in which the researcher’s multiracial heritage was highlighted. The underlying creative process in the acts of choreography and performance has not yet been fully researched for use in clinical practices. It is rarely addressed for adults with brain injury in rehabilitation. This study investigated the perceived effects of the creative process within the performance as therapy (PAT) framework on the brain injury population. Through a collective case study, the principal researcher examined how a positive psychology based dance/movement therapy (DMT) approach could be a viable treatment method for individuals with Excoriation (Skin Picking) Disorder (SPD). The intention of this research was to find additional therapeutic modalities for individuals with SPD, as well as inquire how DMT and SFT would be viable in treating SPD. As a new disorder in the publication of the DSM-5, individuals with SPD currently have limited treatment options available. Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) was integrated with DMT to create a more comprehensive treatment. 96 pages.

This ethnographic study explored the possible innate healing properties and therapeutic aspects of West African dance within a public community setting for people of the African diaspora, specifically the African dance and drum community of Chicago. The study was conducted to identify a possible means for preventative work, explore the unique mental health needs of African Americans and expand the understanding of dance/movement therapy concepts outside of the clinical setting. The purpose of this research was to unite Palestinian and Israeli children who are living in war conflict through movement. This research took place at a kibbutz in Israel, where I worked with an interfaith peace education organization whose mission was to motivate understanding, tolerance, and respect among Israeli and Palestinian children. What are the lived experiences of self-care for human trafficking survivors in Kolkata, India who are working with other survivors? Within the human rights organization, Kolkata Sanved, survivors of human trafficking are implementing dance/movement therapy (DMT) based techniques to empower other survivors. These survivor-trainers are currently fulfilling the dual role of survivor and provider. Six women between the ages of 22 and 28 participated in this transcendental phenomenological study. The purpose of this study was to identify adoptive parents’ predominant, post-adoption needs through a phenomenological needs-assessment. While the initial lens of attachment theory was utilized, the phenomenological methodology allowed for a variety of needs and experiences to emerge. The results served as a basis for exploring how dance/movement therapy (DMT) may effectively play a role in adoption services. The participants of the study included five adoptive parents and two adoption counselors. The purpose of this study was to understand how dance/movement therapists, with BC-DMT or R-DMT credentials, acquire, foster, and perceive their own religious multicultural competence. The research question was how do dance/movement therapists develop religious multicultural competence? Through the methodology of a qualitative case study and the data collection method of a focus group, I examined the selfperception of each participant’s own religious multicultural competence. This research seeks to gain a greater understanding of the first-hand, lived experience of vicarious trauma for providers who have worked with individuals experiencing trauma. Through the application of phenomenological and participatory action methodologies, the experience of vicarious trauma is illuminated. Narrative exchanges between the co-researchers–the author and eleven providers–further explore the roles of the body and narrative process within this phenomenon. A conceptual evolution of vicarious trauma is presented, along with literature connecting the body and narrative within the trauma field. This theoretical comparison of dance/movement therapy (DMT) and expressive arts therapy (EXA) was created in order to better understand the major principles and concepts behind each field. A brief history of the predecessors of each field was discussed, along with five principles from DMT and five concepts from EXA, as chosen by the writer and based on her preferences in alignment with her personal theory and methodology. Although training has developed to treat diverse populations, little attention has been given to increasing the diversity of those studying and practicing the modality. Strengthening the relationship between therapist and client using compassionate methods, such as guided meditation, prior to DMT sessions has, in the experience of this researcher, helped establish a safe environment in which to experience DMT.
