Air Force mission and training scheduling is an immensely complex, time-consuming, and significantly manual process. A scheduling tool known as Puckboard has been developed to help C-17 squadrons transition from moving pucks across large whiteboards to utilizing technology to dynamically plan and deconflict resources in the presence of complex constraints. The overarching goal of incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into this tool is to empower schedulers to quickly produce more efficient schedules that promote unit readiness, with more pilots completing their training syllabi faster, and with fewer disruptions to missions, training, and aircrew personal life. This article reports the results of a workshop study with fighter pilots about the potential benefits and drawbacks of introducing Live Virtual Constructive (LVC) training (combining real aircraft, simulators, and computer-generated AI forces) into Large Force Exercises (LFEs). The study elaborates on a questionnaire study conducted during Arctic Challenge Exercise (ACE) 2021, to investigate pilots’ attitudes towards including virtual and constructive entities in LFEs. Urban Air Mobility (UAM) refers to a system of passenger and cargo air-transportation vehicles within an urban area that is currently being designed to reduce demands for surface transportation. Their success depends on whether many obstacles to UAM operations are overcome. An important challenge to UAM success is the inability of the current air traffic management system to manage urban airspace, and new procedures and operating concepts are needed for coordination of UAM vehicles with existing commercial airspace traffic. We explored the perspectives of Chinese pilots, a rapidly expanding sector in commercial aviation, on how they learn and use Aviation English (AE). A focus group with ten Chinese aviation professionals and in-depth semi-structured interviews with three Chinese commercial pilots were conducted to investigate their views of AE’s pertinence from flight training to line operations. The findings indicate the reliance on rote learning in AE training and the importance of experiential learning for interacting with different AE varieties. The pilots highlighted increased workload when interacting with unfamiliar accents and country-specific phraseology; understanding written communication was also mentioned as a challenge. …

Weather continues to play a significant role in general aviation (GA) events. GA pilots use various technologies to access and view weather information in the cockpit. These technologies range from handheld devices to installed displays. Self-report can be a valuable method for collecting data about people’s goals and perceived motivations – data about aspects of crew thinking that are not otherwise readily observable. One of the challenges associated with collecting self-report data on routine successful performance, however, is that details may go unreported, be deemed unimportant, or may not be recalled. We report a study in which commercial airline flight crews participated in a video-cued retrospective think aloud after flying a high-fidelity simulated arrival into Charlotte airport. Classroom instruction, computer-based training, flight simulation, and aircraft are used to train pilots. New immersive technologies and associated learning methods are used to train military pilots and may have value in civilian pilot training. This paper describes a study to explore the efficacy of using Virtual Reality (VR) Head-mounted Displays (HMDs) to support the training of the emerging pilot workforce. Participants were ab-initio civilian pilot students enrolled in a collegiate aviation program. Participants learned commercial aircraft preflight tasks using one of three methods. Expert participants may not always be available for evaluation of new displays or support systems, and in some cases, it might be better to use novice participants, particularly when the display or support significantly changes existing work practices. The new Commission Regulation (EU) 2018/1042 on technical requirements and administrative procedures includes psychological assessment of flight crew which refers to accredited Aviation Psychologists (AVPSY). However, the associated acceptable meansof compliance and guidance material does not provide a specific definition or requirements of such psychologists. Likewise, the term Aviation Human Factors Specialist (AVHFS) has not yet been legally recognised in Europe. AVHFS lacks a European definition and no pan-European competency-based endorsement exists. Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth became a widely used method of delivering treatment for substance use disorders (SUD), but its impact upon treatment engagement and dropout remains unknown. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of adult SUD patients (n = 544) between October 2020 and June 2022 among a cohort of treatment-seeking patients at a nonprofit community behavioral health center in Southwestern Ohio. We estimated the likelihood of treatment dropout using survival curves and Cox proportional hazard models, comparing patients who used telehealth with video, telephone, or solely in-person services within the first 14 days of diagnosis. Early-life attachment disruption appears to sensitize neuroinflammatory signaling to increase later vulnerability for stress-related mental disorders, including depression. How stress initiates this process is unknown, but studies with adult rats and mice suggest sympathetic nervous system activation and/or cortisol elevations during the early stress are key. Guinea pig pups isolated from their mothers exhibit an initial active behavioral phase characterized by anxiety-like vocalizing. This is followed by inflammatory-dependent depressive-like behavior and fever that sensitize on repeated isolation. Models of care for substance use disorder (SUD) treatment have traditionally required face-to-face visits, since individuals receive a broad range of services including individual psychotherapy, group therapy, urine drug screens, laboratory testing, dispensation of Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), and prescriptions for psychotropic or other medications. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth became a more widely used method of delivering healthcare, including for SUD treatment. Recent work has shown the importance of understanding and supporting interdependence relationships among agents engaging in complex, joint activities. Building on the Coactive Design Method of Johnson, the goal of this research was to determine the impact of providing operators with real-time information of team interdependencies. It was hypothesized that allowing operators to focus on maximizing the opportunities for team synergy would result in better planning in a dynamic environment. Characterizing and predicting pilot cognitive workload remains a formidable challenge, especially in tasks with a high perceptual/motor demand like aerial refueling. Cognitive models are useful tools for this, as they offer the potential to derive both performance and workload simulations before a test is conducted. We conducted a task analysis of a C-17 aerial refueling mission and developed a low-fidelity Atomic Components of Thought – Rational (ACT-R) model and environment to simulate the task. While many existing taxonomies and frameworks provide a common vocabulary for describing how human operators fail in the context of sociotechnical systems, at present, there is no common vocabulary to describe how humans succeed. Such a framework would facilitate systematically collecting and analyzing data on how human performance can produce safety, not just how it can reduce safety. The selection of Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs) is known to be extensive and highly selective. Air Traffic Control the Netherlands (LVNL) has a six-stage procedure for ab initio applicants. It includes two rounds of cognitive ability testing, personality testing, two job sample tests, an interview, and an assessment centre (AC). This study examines the construct-and predictive validity of the AC using 15 dimension-scores as predictor variables, with the final score on a high-fidelity job sample test as the dependent variable (criterion). The FAA currently makes frequent use of Flow Constrained Areas (FCAs) to thin traffic through some region of airspace by assigning departure delay to flights filed to fly through that airspace. An important potential future use of such FCAs is their integrated application within a Collaborative Trajectory Options Program (CTOP) Traffic Management Initiative (TMI). As the volume of flight is extended, it is expected that the task complexity of air traffic controllers will increase. In Japan, air traffic control in en-route airspace is operating with TEPS (Trajectorized En-route Traffic Data Processing System), which has functions to display information necessary for air traffic controllers’ tasks. It has evolved to support the controllers with less workload, resulting in escalated interaction between controllers. However, paradoxically this means more information is provided and more workload would be required. The study examined the predictive validity of the Computerised Aptitude Selection System (COMPASS) that was set up to support the RSAF in its selection of pilots and other vocations. COMPASS measures cognitive abilities theoretically identified to be relevant to the vocation and was introduced for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) pilot selection since 2003. The Covid-19 pandemic reduced air traffic levels in Europe by up to 95% and the system had to respond quickly to preserve safety, maintain efficiency and performance. Operators were significantly affected both in terms of individual and team performance, as well as the longer-term impact to skills and attitudes. Performance-based navigation (PBN) has been implemented in the redesign of terminal airspace across the National Airspace System (NAS). However, some locations, such as the New York metro area (NY), have not adopted PBN widely. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) operations are shifting from multiple operators controlling a single-UAS to a single operator supervising multiple-UAS engaged in complex mission sets. To enable this, there is wide consensus in literature that limitations in human cognitive capacity require shifting low-level control responsibilities to automation so that human operators can focus on supervisory control. However, hazard analyses to identify related safety concerns have largely been unexplored. To address this shortfall, this paper applies System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) on an abstracted model of a multi-UAS system.
