We conducted an exploratory data analysis as a step toward modeling components of SA. It was based on data collected from situation awareness probe questions that were used in large-scale air traffic control simulations over 5 semesters of an ATC radar internship in the Center for Human Factors in Advanced Aeronautics Technologies (CHAAT). Three components of SA were generated by a principal component analysis that we label “Action Relevant,” “Distance R and “Low Priority.” The analyses provide a data-driven scheme for categorizing probes relate SA that can be used in future evaluations of NextGen concepts and technologies.

As part of an ongoing collaborative project, a high fidelity simulation lab was developed to address teamwork deficiencies exhibited by newly minted aviation professionals. This lab, referred to as the Flight Operations Center-Unified Simulation (FOCUS) lab, was enhanced with greater fidelity, realistic and complex scenario triggers, and robust after action reviews. Student teams participate in a simulated work shift to further improve problem solving skills and coordination among senior-level undergraduate students.

The debate regarding the effectiveness of computer-based software for pilot training and proficiency has been ongoing since such software first became available. While studies on the efficacy of such software have been and continue to be conducted, pilots are in large number utilizing such packages. A nationwide survey was conducted to determine how the Microsoft Flight Simulator (MFS) software package is being used by pilots for both initial private pilot training and for maintaining proficiency once certificated. Over 650 survey respondents evaluated the effectiveness of MFS in 14 areas of pilot operations. It was found that over 40% of respondents …

The purpose of this study is to determine whether any technology exists to unobtrusively, reliably, and accurately detect symptoms of fatigue in real time before fatigue affects performance. Airline pilots are fitted with a variety of physiological measurement devices (e.g. EEG, blink rate, etc.) that have been demonstrated in the literature to be related to fatigue. Each crew of two pilots performs simulated gate-to-gate flight operations under rested and fatigued conditions, during which physiologic and performance parameters are continuously monitored. Twenty-three helicopter pilots flew a simulated Bell 206 in Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) scenarios with obstructions present. In Study 1, the head-mounted display (HMD) showed highway-in-the-sky guidance but not obstructions. Study 2 added obstructions (broadcast towers, power lines) in the HMD. Pilots detected and avoided HMD-depicted obstructions earlier than those only shown out the window. Wire strikes were frequent without HMD depictions of obstructions but were greatly reduced when these objects were shown in the HMD. They were completely eliminated when a red warning fence was overlaid on the power-line graphic at the point it transected the flight path. …

As capabilities of autonomous systems expand, traditional geospatial information displays used for supervisory control will likely need to be augmented with more explicit information on higherorder autonomous activities, such as goal-directed task selection, situation assessment, decisionmaking, and planning. We present a supervisory control interface for higher-order autonomy based on finite state machine diagrams called Layered Pattern Recognizable Interfaces for State Machines (L-PRISM). Controllers identify vertical separation in aircraft depicted on 2-D radar displays by calculating altitude from numerical values. This is used to create a 3-D mental image to determine vertical spacing; a mentally fatiguing practice. Current stereoscopic display technology exists that may allow reduction of this aspect of controller workload. With a near doubling of traffic expected within the next two decades (FAA, 2012), controllers’ abilities to rapidly interpret spacing and maintain awareness will become increasingly imperative to safety. Air traffic controllers are often required to simultaneously communicate with several aircraft over multiple radio frequencies. As a result, during peak loading, it is common for the controller to receive multiple concurrent communications, each from a different aircraft, making it difficult to discern all necessary auditory communications. To address this problem, a modified air traffic control (ATC) interface was prototyped with the goal of increasing controller-to-pilot communication efficiency. Simulator pilots are subject to some of the constraints of a real flight situation in a PC based flight simulation. Situation awareness (SA) for simulator pilots was explored in terms of underlying cognitive aspects by analyzing the compound effects of expertise, working memory, inhibition and divided attention. Online and Offline SA measurements were analyzed with expertise and scores of Automated Operation Span Task, Stroop and Coşkunöz visual attention tasks. Computational models of aircraft pilot performance will gain importance over the next decades, as major evolutions in the national airspace continue to emerge with the NextGen program. Evaluating new technology, or procedures such as self-separation, requires time and resourceconsuming pilot-in-the-loop (PITL) simulations. Models can augment PITL findings and they can help to constrain the scope of PITL simulations. If they are validated, such computational models may actually answer some design questions in place of PITL simulations. This paper summarizes a review of modeling efforts to address pilot performance, and elaborates on pilot-automation interaction models.

The incident and accidents involved events that distracted the aircrews from a timely and accurate evaluation of the emergency situations that confronted them. The experiment examined the effects of Digital taxi (D-Taxi) clearances when either 40% or 75% of the departure aircraft were data link equipped and compared these conditions to voice-only operations. Sixteen Airport Traffic Control Tower controllers used the Tower Operations Digital Data System at the ground control and local control positions to control airport traffic with a 270- degree simulated out-the-window view. The controllers worked at each position in each experimental condition, provided ratings of subjective workload, and responded to questionnaires. European Air Traffic Management Program (CARE, 2003) recommendations for a 3- phased approach to workload assessment provided Transportation Safety Board investigators insight into how operating conditions for approaches into a non-radar airport under instrument meteorological conditions impact crew workload. It was possible to develop and use secondary task questions for three of four cognitive task domains. Qualitative assessment of verbal responses illustrated how crews use verbal information to support mental models. For over twenty years, two similar types of training have attempted to reduce aviator caused accidents. Crew Resource Management was widely adopted by U.S. airlines, and has generally been credited with helping to dramatically reduce their accident rates. Interestingly, CRM was embraced with little scientific evidence that it could actually reduce operational errors. In contrast, Aeronautical Decision Making, aimed at general aviation users, underwent a series of double-blind experiments before being adopted. In 1976 a DC-9 and a Trident 3B collided over Zagreb in the former Yugoslavia; in 1977 two Boeing 747s collided on the ground in Tenerife; and in 1990 a Boeing 707 ran out of fuel after a missed approach and crashed at Cove Neck. Because they involved language issues and resulted in 832 deaths, these three accidents have been cited by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in justification of a worldwide program to improve the language proficiency of pilots and air traffic controllers. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has developed a Crew Resource Management (CRM) Skills measurement method that includes a Threat and Error Management (TEM) concept and identifies a crew’s level of CRM Skills by the way in which they manage human errors and threats. A pilot-in-the-loop simulation was conducted that required pilots to taxi following acceleration and speed profiles under two Speed-conformance conditions (Defined and Undefined). Pilots were given a commanded speed in both conditions, however, in the Defined Speed-conformance condition, air traffic control (ATC) issued alerts when the aircraft speed exceeded a +/- 1.5 kt speed range. A current-day, baseline trial with no required speed profile was also included. Information can be relayed to pilots by visual presentation or auditory presentation; both methods are frequently used. To date, there is quite a bit of conflicting literature regarding which type of communication is most effective for recalling information. The current study tested memory differences between digits presented visually or audibly in number strings. Results showed that performance in the visual presentation condition was superior to the auditory presentation condition.
