Cancer – related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a common side effect of cancer treatment that interferes with cancer survivors’ occupational performance, independence, and quality of life. Despite its high prevalence, CRCI remains under recognized and inconsistently addressed within oncology care. About 70% of individuals diagnosed with cancer report cognitive changes during or after treatment, yet many do not receive treatment. Occupational therapists are clinically trained to evaluate and treat functional cognition, activities of daily activities, instrumental activities of daily living, and client centered goals, positioning them as key providers in addressing CRCI. Family assistance with palliative care for advanced cancer patients is very important in optimizing patients’ quality of life. The purpose of this study was to explore family perceptions of palliative service provision to advanced cancer patients at home. The study adopted a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach based on in-depth interviews with six participants. The main theme that emerged was family perceptions of participation in palliative care programs for cancer patients at home. There were three subthemes: family administering additional treatment, the patient being resigned to and accepting their condition, and the patient being helped by treatment. The …

Prevention and management of nausea and vomiting are important in cancer treatment. Effective management requires both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Patients and family members have important contributions to achieve effective control of nausea and vomiting through self-management. The objective of this review is to explore and synthesize the scientific literature about self-management strategies as a type of non-pharmacological intervention for managing nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. Anxiety and depression are psychological distress that often occurs in gynecological cancer patients. However, there are few studies related to interventions to overcome these problems. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a spiritual intervention on anxiety and depression in such cancer patients. The research design was quasi-experimental, employing pretest and posttest on the intervention and the control groups. The total number of respondents was 108 patients, consisting of 54 in each group. The instrument used in the study was the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Cancer incidence rates for all Alaska Natives (Eskimo, Indian, Aleut) were first reported in 1976. Since then numerous publications have documented the unusual cancer patterns in this population. These are the latest statistics for which there is complete data statewide, and provide the best estimates of cancer incidence in the Alaska Native population. Numbers of new (incident) cases and rates are given for all cancers and for specific sites. These numbers are presented by age, sex, ethnicity, geographic region, and service unit. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is presenting a monograph written specifically for community leaders, health professionals and lay health workers serving Native American communities. Native Americans have higher mortality rates than the general U.S. population for several major cancer sites. This publication focuses on the need to reduce those rates through effective interventions at the grassroots level.

This report presents Alaska Native cancer survival rates and stage of disease at diagnosis. Data on survival and stage at diagnosis are given for all cancers combined, and for select primary cancer sites (the organ in which the cancer first began). Survival rates are given for only those cancers for which there were enough patients to calculate reliable estimates. The focus is on five-year relative survival rates because these rates are most commonly used in the cancer literature and most appropriate for comparisons between populations.
