The mental health crisis in the US is severe, with depression and anxiety leading causes of disability among young adults. The mental health services market is growing, but access to care remains inconsistent, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Pharmacists are playing a crucial role in mental health care, improving medication adherence and patient outcomes through collaborative practice agreements. Systemic reform is needed to address barriers such as affordability and social determinants, with pharmacists integral to closing care gaps.

BACKGROUND: Expanding access to sterile syringes in rural areas is vital, as injection-related epidemics expand beyond metropolitan areas globally. While pharmacies have potential to be an easily accessible source of sterile syringes, research in cities has identified moral, legal and ethical barriers that preclude over-the-counter (OTC) sales to people who inject drugs (PWID). The current study builds on prior urban-based research by elucidating (1) pharmacy OTC policies and (2) pharmacists' rationale for, and barriers and facilitators to, OTC syringe sales in a US rural area hard hit by drug-related epidemics.
METHODS: We conducted 14 semi-structured interviews with pharmacists recruited from …

Safe Medication Disposal In Underserved Communities, Elaina Etter
Safe Medication Disposal In Underserved Communities, Elaina Etter
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
Of the 130 Americans who will die each day from opioid overdose, 46 will have overdosed on prescription opioid medications. The opioid epidemic has become one of our nation’s largest public health crises. Because many individuals may have access to prescription medications of family members or friends, responsible medication disposal has become increasingly important to prevent harm.
This fall, I worked on a professional project at local Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), which aimed to increase education about safe medication disposal. These clinics provide comprehensive healthcare services to underserved patients, many of whom live in rural areas or have limited …

Effect Of Rurality On Diabetes-Related Hospitalizations In A Small Acute Care Hospital In Jackson County, Indiana, Lindsey Ridlen
Effect Of Rurality On Diabetes-Related Hospitalizations In A Small Acute Care Hospital In Jackson County, Indiana, Lindsey Ridlen
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Patient access to healthcare can be a potentially significant barrier to overall health outcomes, especially when paired with a costly and complex disease state such as diabetes. The purpose of this study was to determine if patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus living in rural areas of Jackson County experience greater health disparity and more diabetes-related hospitalizations than those living in non-rural areas. The study was conducted at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Indiana. A total of 164 patients were included in the final analysis based on the presence of a diabetes-related diagnosis code in the patient’s chart; of these, …
