Indiana University Health: A Student, An Institution, And The People, Allison Bates

Allison Bates is a student in Purdue University’s Doctor of Pharmacy program with an anticipated graduation date of May 2019. Her future career aspirations are to practice in ambulatory care pharmacy or in an oncology setting. She has volunteered with the Joseph Maley Foundation since 2009 and with the “It’s My Closet” organization in Lafayette since 2014. This article describes her experience working as an intern with Dr. Dawn Moore, Vice President of Pharmacy and Chief Pharmacy Officer at IU Health.

Value-Added Services: Incorporating Pharmacy Students In A Hospital Setting, Megan Unger

Megan Unger, a PharmD candidate in her fourth professional year in the College of Pharmacy, completed an introductory pharmacy practice experience at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, during her third professional year. This was the third of thirteen experiential learning rotations that she will complete prior to graduation in 2019. Her future plans include pursuing a postgraduate residency training program. In this article, Megan highlights the value-added services that pharmacy students can provide to institutional pharmacy settings and the patients served.

Medication Therapy Management provides the community with many benefits. In order to demonstrate the importance, we used pharmacist surveys to convey how often MTM is utilized, pharmacists perspectives on service utilization and challenges, and goals and expectations of the outcomes of MTM services.

- Patients with uncontrolled diabetes often have many clinicians, including pharmacists, to help control their diabetes
- Clinicians that can empathize with patients have shown to improve patient satisfaction and outcomes2
- The Diabetes Immersion elective at Thomas Jefferson University College of Pharmacy is offered to third-year pharmacy students to provide additional knowledge about diabetes through hands-on learning and guest lecturers

Objective: To investigate whether the tendency to self-medicate increases as students progress though the pharmacy curriculum.
Design: An online survey was administered through Survey Monkey by a link sent to the email addresses of students who attended the South Carolina College of Pharmacy/ University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy (SCCP/USC-COP) during the 2017-2018 school year.
Methods: Self-medication was defined as the use of over-the-counter (OTC) medications, medications prescribed to another person, and recreational (i.e. alcohol, tobacco) or illicit substances for therapeutic purposes. - Promote safety by reducing the number of preparation errors involving IV products that could subsequently lead to patient harm.

Rationale: An inter-professional education (IPE) masterclass symposium titled, ‘The journey to team-based healthcare’, was jointly hosted by the School of Pharmacy, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), the Irish Institute of Pharmacy and the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy in East Tennessee State University in May 2017. The masterclass provided a comprehensive overview of IPE initiatives based on the extensive experience of senior academics from the host institutions, which included staff from pharmacy, nursing and medicine. The masterclass was attended by healthcare professionals, policy makers and educationalists working in Ireland. As part of the symposium, focus groups were conducted …

Exploring whether or not students feel prepared financially for graduation is a useful exercise for universities as the results can provide ways to better support their students as they move into life after graduation. Financial wellness plays a role in a person’s overall wellness and happiness. This could be of particular concern for pharmacy students due to increasing cost of education and typically, a minimum of six years of education is required. Gender-Based Differences Among Pharmacy Students Involved In Academically Dishonest Behavior, Eric J. Ip, Jai Pal, Shadi Doroudgar, Monica K. Bidwal, Bijal M. Shah-Manek

Objective. To determine whether differences based on gender exist among pharmacy students involved in cases of admitted cheating or other academic dishonesty and to assess perceptions of academic dishonesty.
Methods. Two cohorts of second-year male and female pharmacy students from four Northern California pharmacy programs were invited to complete a 45-item cross-sectional survey. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s chi-squared test were used for statistical analysis.
Results. There were 330 surveys completed with a 59% response rate. No significant gender-based differences were found regarding admitted cheating in pharmacy school and in regards to participating in various forms of academically dishonest behavior. Female …

Purpose: Patient falls during hospitalization can delay discharge and decrease quality of life. Medications are one factor that can impact fall risk. This study examines patients who fell while admitted to a cardiac surgery unit to identify which high-risk medications are most prevalent to promote patient safety.
Methods: This was a retrospective case control study. Adult patients over the age of 18 were included. Exclusion criteria included pediatric patients and those with an intentional fall event. A total of 39 falls and 78 controls were analyzed in the study. The primary outcome was a fall event during hospitalization. Other variables …
